Knox County Passes Mandatory Indoor Face Masks

I rather have a vaccination developed than hope for herd immunity. If I catch COVID at age 59 with type 2 diabetes diagnosed within the last two years I may not make it. If you watched the NBC report , there is no doubt wearing a mask can help stop the spread and that is what the medical professionals are stating. I have not heard one expert say it is 100% foolproof.

As I posted in response to someone else in this thread...it seems we may already have reached the HIT (herd immunity threshold). Given your comorbidities, you are definitely at risk and should take precautions. Thankfully, the treatments now are so much more nuanced that doctors now tailor the treatment to each patients health profile. It also helps that we have confirmation in a peer reviewed study what some parts of the world figured out months ago...hydroxychloroquine is very effective in treating covid-19.

As far as a vaccine goes, we have vaccines for the flu which only work ~33% of the time due to the mutations (same will happen with this). Last comment on masks, suggest you do not put too much stock in how much they help. Most of the masks being worn are single layer cloth (e.g., cotton) which stop less than 10% of particles greater than 0.30 microns (and, as I stated, covid-19 is 0.06-0.14 microns). The experts cannot agree on mask use for a variety of reasons ().

I wish you well and hope you and your loved ones stay safe during these crazy times.

Our approach worked well the past two nights but the 4th weekend is historically mild in Knoxville as far as bars. We'll see how it goes next week.

There was one guy who came in Friday, walked up to my key bartender and asked us "they're still making you do that?" in reference to our masks, to which I responded by tossing a mask to him and telling him it goes both ways. He made some snide remark and walked out. Today, he returned in a MAGA hat, harassed my hostess until my bouncer confronted him. He then whipped out his phone and started recording as I came up and nudged him off our property and told him to come back when he wanted to cease his crusade. He stormed off to an applause from our patio guests.

2020 is so ****ing weird. Regardless of where you stand politically, it's so strange to harangue a business for its practices as though you literally have nothing better to do. I think he was a mental case and I didn't want to see it escalate beyond trying to **** my hostess and insult my staff.
You were within your rights to do what you did and bumrush the guy out.

I think both sides need to relax.

That's absolutely ridiculous. You vastly overrate the healthcare systems in other countries. I have spoken personally with colleagues who have confirmed that Sweden, for instance, has a near third-world quality of elderly care. I also have first-degree knowledge that our "numbers" are dramatically over-reported. I know of multiple reported "COVID deaths" that are clearly not even conceivably caused by viral infection.

It's a mess, and it's infuriating to those of us who are trying our best to stick with the science.

It can be slowed down if someone with COVID sneezes or coughs into theiR mask instead of on another person.
Why is someone with respiratory symptoms at the store, gym, or restaurant?

Stop drinking the Kool Aid. Respiratory infections are also spread by people putting respiratory secretions on their fingers and then touching everything.

Pop quiz: mask usage has certainly increased overall across the country, yet what is the infection rate doing? A good friend in Texas told me the other day that "everyone is wearing them" where he is. Now, Google the new case numbers in Dallas.

Of course, that still leaves the question of if/why we need to slow the spread in the first place.

The initial guidance was that masks helped but we shouldn't be rushing to buy them up, so that the people who needed them could get them. Then we made many more. Hardly a contradiction.

Slowing the spread doesn't "only" matter if hospitals are overwhelmed, and a number in the South are heading in that direction.

It's contrarian, conservative BS masquerading as some high-level conversation about liberty and "tHe RoLe Of GoVeRnMeNt"

The initial guidance was that they were ineffective. It was clearly stated by the cdc, the us surgeon general, and every news outlet. Here’s one example of what the cdc had to say and I can find numerous others if you’d like.

If it doesn’t only matter to slow the spread to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, then give me the other reasons...what are the other reasons for slowing the spread?

Someone with symptoms may be at the store because they may feel fine and not know they have it or think they have allergies instead.

As a doctor you should know that it’s not fully known how it’s spread yet and it’s thought to spread mainly by close contact and airborne, not surfaces.

Mask usage has increased but I guarantee it’s a lot less in rural areas, especially southern states. The infection is spiking in states now in those states where it’s not required and those that reopened earlier than recommended.

Case in point below... in Texas.

The prevention is to stop droplets that the virus is attached to. Masks definitely do this, but is also why masks must be single use. Virus particles can still get through but not in the volume. Remember, it’s viral load we’re talking about. Kind of like sperm. It takes thousands to get the one to the egg. It takes a pretty good viral load to infect.
Twss?

What percentage of people do you think are single use when it comes to masks? Is it even 1%? I see a ton wear them beneath the nose and you know a bunch of people get them wet with slobber, spit, mucus, or whatever, touch the mask and then touch everything else. People probably wear them opposite directions often as well. If someone wants to wear a mask or a business decides to require them that’s fine. The people trying to make it seem like you’re killing people if you don’t wear a mask are ridiculous as is the general politicization of this whole issue. I also don’t like the Knox County medical board overstepping their bounds and I was pleased to see Mayor Jacobs vote no and the Sheriff make the statement he did.

I agree with the mask mandate. Tenn. cases are spiking again. Hate to see it happen but there is a lot of selfish , irresponsible people out there and we all can diminish the impact of the COVID resurgence.
Are you sure there has been a resurgence?

Another daily observation. Back to my same Kroger, probably 4 to 5 not wearing masks. I saw 2 enter that way right in front of the security guard. Makes me think corporate told them not to make an issue of it. Just my speculation.

Someone can visit a store and involuntary have a cough or sneeze. Happens all the time. I want to see the spread stopped because of elderly family. I would rather keep them safe until a vaccination is available. I don’t drink kool-aid but I suggest you refrain from the weed. It’s clouding your judgement.

So what is the amount of viral load needed to infect one? I'm sure it varies by individual with many variables in play.

Read that Tn. Cases we’re going up a couple of days ago online on one of the major news organizations sites. . I did not verify with any of the official government or medical sites.
What's happening with death rates. It seems that more people getting it (and forming that immunity) and less people dying, is what we actually want.

I heard that. Still I know there will be pressure for states to reverse opening back up if the cases rise regardless of the death rate. It’s already happening.

Which is stupid.
If people generally would practice social distancing g and also wear masks then states would stay open. The pictures at parties, pools and bar&restaurants this weekend was sad to see. People are acting like COVID never happened. That is what is actually stupid. I can’t blame officials to close everything down again if the public as a whole doesn’t act responsibly.

Why try to stop the spread if the mortality rate is plummeting? (It is.)

Again, if mortality rates are down, then we want people to get it and build that immunity.

That's what's stupid. We never halted life for the flu. We were told that it was the death rate that made Covid special enough to crater the economy and society. Now it's a non-factor?

Stupid.

I don’t agree with that rationale from a personal standpoint. Plus it has been reported that some are catching COVID more than once.
