Knoxville Restaurants

Thats great news...are you familiar with there history...about 11 or 12 years ago they won some prestigious national quality/best business practice awards and had an opportunity to go 'big time' in terms of market size/volume, etc but decided to remain a small regional chain....but a very successful one...

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

My wife went with her company to Pals to see how they ran their business, and learn what it takes to win the award.

The winner get a trip to DC. The award is handed to them by the President himself. So it is a pretty big deal.

La Parrilla in Turkey Creek. Seal of approval: always full of Mexicans.

amigo i used to work with would always recommend la parilla. It is indeed frequented by our latino brethren. also, I enjoy el charro on Kingston pk.

Cheddars has been discussed before but went there Saturday. I had the Philly Cheesesteak, enjoyed it. For the price of food it is tough to beat. 2 adults and 2 children and we dined for around $36.

The value is pretty awesome. The food isn't too shabby either.

So Man Vs Food is on, and it's the Knoxville episode. I was just watching this and thinking they might could have found better places to go, but when I sat down and thought about Knoxville restaurants, I couldn't think of many places.

He went to Dixons on Magnolia, Sweet Pea's and Ye Olde Steakhouse.

I think he could have gone to Calhouns (even though chained, the main restaurant is on the river and really nice), Gus's Good Times Deli, Ali Baba, or Littons. If you could pick any 3 Knoxville restaurants, where would you send him?

I've been to the Calhouns in Gatlinburg. It was damn good!

If the Varsity has better burgers than Litton's , I have no desire to go there and pay their price for a burger.
I have ate at the Varsity a few times. It does not have great food. It is a fast food joint.

The chili dogs, onion rings and frosty oranges are great. A legend in Atlanta

My top 3, as well. A lot of people haven't heard of Meksiko -- it's in the old Mr. Gatti's building just down from the Farragut Schools.

I've known Mario since he managed Monterey and Estelita's. Meksiko is below par for what he used to be.

He's spent too much time with Shrimp, Oysters, and Beer and his other Taco joint imo. He should concentrate on Meksiko.

Do you actually eat out in Knoxville? Every time I look at this thread you are bashing on a different restaurant...which do you like?

Are you talking about the old Monterey mexican restaurant that was in that strip mall in Farragut near where Hollywood video used to be?

Fairly certain that one was shut down for health code violations. This was about 8 years ago.

So I want to pick someone's brain about La Parilla since it was brought up again.

MY family typically goes to Don Gallo or Pelanchos for mexican and honestly for me if I were to do a blind taste test with either of them I probably wouldn't know the difference. They're just that comparable, imo. Has anyone who has eaten at either of these restaurants eaten at La Parilla? How would you compare the two? Is one really that much better than the other?

Two weeks from opening day. Stop by and check it out, you will not be disappointed.

That's it. It wasn't shut down for health violations. Owner moved out of state and property jacked the lease payment through the roof.

They opened Estelita's instead.

Yes they had unique business model but were very successful....after they won the award they set up seminars to share information, not sure if they charged for this or not....this included people in the class working in a store...did you wife get to do that...I heard lots of great reviews from it....again they were very unique...IE a single store manager was given lots of autonomy but had to adhere to a small set of metrics that were set in stone...but it was up him or her as to how to achieve them...

After they won the award I expected the small chain to go big time, including franchisees but to my knowledge not much changed...very slow expansion...

Went to the Original Louis in Fountain City.

Disappointing. Terribly unauthentic italian food. I had veal parmigiana, which appeared to be dunked in batter and deep fried.
