Knoxville Restaurants

I was in Oak Ridge last weekend. Took my father to dinner for his 93rd birthday at a place called Puleo's (Cedar Bluff, South of interstate on the left). Absolutely fantastic food for all, including my boys. The shrimp and grits is to die for. Also, their bread, dipped in olive oil is baked heaven. Highly recommended.

Sounds like a great place
Congrats on your Dad living 9 decades

Puleo's usually has good food. Unfortunately, last 2 times I've been the service has been terrible (Cedar Bluff and Deane Hill stores).

As noted by previous poster, congratulations to your family for having your dad around to celebrate with....I highly recommend you do it again this weekend....you have no idea what some of would pay or do to have that opportunity...

Somewhat surprising.

Went to Ye Olde Steakhouse a long time ago, I think it was after the kitchen caught fire the first time around. I swear it seems like that restaurant has caught fire twice. Anyway.. I just remember it being pretty decent. I was personally more impressed with the Peddler in Gatlinburg. Perhaps I need to take a trip back to Ye Olde.

I've had people tell me that the steak at Alamo Steakhouse in Gatlinburg is really good.

What happened to O'Charley's?

My family just recently ordered take-out from the Kingston Pike location and there was like one decent meal out of the five that were ordered. They even managed to screw up the chicken tenders for crying out loud, and the burger I got was just absolutely cooked to death. It's been a few years since we had been there but none of us ever remember it being that bad. To top it off we didn't even get everything we ordered.

Was this just a bad night for them or has anyone else noticed this decline as well?

What happened? When has O'Charley's really been that good?

This thread is depressing as hell. I am moving back to Knoxville in a couple of years from Atlanta. From my house here I can walk to 10 restaurants that are better than everything listed in this thread. I am afraid I will be having good eatery withdrawals.

What are the 10 good restaurants within walking distance?

Fox brother bbq, noni's deli, vortex, wrecking bar brew pub, eats, Mali, Porter beer bar, shujaa's bbq, Atkins Park, Highland bakery, soon to be victory sandwich bar, Rathbun's steakhouse, 6 feet under, Augustine's. These are all places that I have walked to from my house that woukd be better or at least a push with all of the restaurants mentioned in this thread.

ATL does have some good eats. You in Little 5 points?

I do think Knoxville is getting better. Of course you still have the people that flock to chains in Turkey Creek/West, but there are good options in and around town. Granted, short of downtown, there's not a dense area like that where everything is within walking distance but I guess its part of the way Knoxville is sprawled/layed out.

I'm sure they are. Knoxville does have some really good spots, but I agree about some of the places mentioned in this thread being lackluster.

Knoxville has the best burgers I have ever eaten at a place called The Stock and Barrell. I'd give it a huge recommendation for the next time you're in the area.

Don't worry, there will be plenty here to satisfy you. You will probably have to drive, though :)

Off the top of my head:
Nama
Echo
Knox Mason
Seasons
Cru
Bistro By the Tracks
Linderhoff
Tomato head
Stir Fry Cafe
Copper Cellar
Chesapeake's
Ruth's Chris
Fleming's
Plus a number of good BBQ, Mexican, and deli spots

I'm between Virginia Highlands and little 5 points. The neighborhood is called SONO (meaning South of North). But is commonly lumped in with the old forth ward. Not a fancy part of town, but very convenient to all the hot spots. Agreed that Knoxville is improving. But like you said, it is majorly sprawled out.

Well, I've got a car, so I guess it isn't the worst thing. Lol. I love tomato head btw. Sad they closed their Maryville location. That was my favorite place to go when I would visit my mom in Maryville.

I'll give the barrel place a shot next time I'm up.

A few more:

Tupelo Honey cafe
Cafe 4
Conner's
And, perhaps the best around: Foothills Milling Co. (Maryville)

Sushi in Knoxville sounds gross

Nama is as good as anywhere I've been, including Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, or Miami. There are a couple of authentic smaller not-so-trendy spots that are very good, as well: Tomo (near the mall) and East Japanese (Farragut, in the Fresh market shopping center).

I like tupelo honey and I have been to foothills milling company. It is good, but $$$$. I don't consider that a great restaurant because, for me, it is not a realistic option for regular dining out. Although I wish it was.

At the good places it's just as fresh in Knoxville as about anywhere else in the US minus a few minutes. I found out a while back that extremely fresh fish is flown into Island Home Airport at least once a day.

Yeah, it's a "special occasion" kind of place for sure.

As for ATL, wish I was heading out of the office to the Vortex for a burger and a nice IPA.
