Knoxville Restaurants

How would you guys rate these if you've been?

Hops And Hollers
Casual Pint
Saw Works Brewing company
Downtown Grill And Brewery
Crafty Bastard
Calhoun's/Smokey Mountain Brewery
Black Horse Pub

Obviously the last one will have a little bias coming from Vol in ar. :)
Well if I'm ranking food I only know of three that have them. I've had good meals at Black Horse and DgB and meh at Calhouns. I like the DGB bc I know half the staff and I enjoy the daily specials. Plus beers are 3 bucks for HH and I think LITs as well. The best beer bar food around for me is Central Flats and Taps

I haven't found any Knoxville area restaurants remotely close to the quality of where I moved from (Austin, Texas). Ye Olde sucks... My steaks were horrible. Calhouns is average. It's seriously depressing what is called "good food" and "Mexican food" here.

I like everything else about the area, but food is not one if them. I chuckle every time someone says "go check out his new Mexican place, it's really good!"
I would actually agree with this. The food in Austin is amazing, and for the most part Knoxville doesn't compare. I saw Nama recommend, but it doesn't even come close to the sushi available in downtown Austin, and I really like Nama's.

Interesting. My friend from Austin was quite impressed by Nama.

There are a couple sushi places downtown Austin that are the best I've ever had in the US. I wish I could remember the names of the places, because they are unreal.

I have this "thing" with sushi. For some reason it has never come across as a proper meal to me. It's always just an appetizer in my mind. You share a roll with someone and then onto the main course.

I used to feel that way. Then I finally ordered enough to actually get stuffed on it. Love the stuff.

The best sushi in Knoxville is found by going to Nama and asking for a chef platter at your desired price point with whatever preferences you have (heat, fruit, favorite fish, etc). They always have some unique fresh catch and you always get more for your $ than ordering individual rolls.

If any of you have been to Gloria Jean's in Kingston, it's about to be on Restaurant Startup on CNBC. Pretty cool!

Joe Bastianich is very dramatic and has no clue about food pricing in our market. You simply can't sell a bowl of shrimp and grits here in Knoxville for $30 when you can buy a 9oz center cut filet at Connors for $30. I'd take his money but not his advice.

I'm still waiting on this list of supposedly horrible restaurants that couldn't come close to Austin...

Family dinner at Lenos y Carbon tonight was fantastic. Delicious empanadas and I had a Cuban steak entree smothered in tomato/onion sauce with rice/beans/plantains. Friendly, attentive service to boot.

Nope, especially in Kingston. And, I love shrimp and grits!

I assume his list would go something like this:

McDonalds on Kingston Pike
McDonalds on Cilnton Highway
McDonalds in the Walmart on Clinton Highway
KFC
A hot dog from Weigels
A bag of Flamin Hot Cheetos from Pilot

I might have to try them again but our first visit wasn't spectacular. The empanadas were rocking and the beans were excellent. The cilantro in the beans just made it even better.

The wife and I had Chuy's tonight. Excellent as always!

I have not been there myself honestly. How are they different from typical mexican restaurants?

It's pretty different. Much more spice and several different sauces. The hatch green chili sauce is the hottest they have, but it's not that bad. I get the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken with refried beans and green chile rice. The queso is most excellent, as is the creamy jalapeno and salsa. My wife loves the bean burrito that's covered with their queso.

I went to Nama for the first time last night and had the Chef Platter. I thought it was fantastic, but I typically only eat sushi at a couple of places so my experience is limited.

It's not cheap, but very good. I'll definitely eat there again.

You know I wouldn't lead you wrong :)

I was groomed on sushi in Tampa and Nama is every bit as good as any place down there.

Of course, I'm sure it wouldn't hold a candle to Austin.
