'18 LA CB Brandon Davis (Tennessee signee)

247 nor Rivals show him on the football commit list yet. I think he is going to sign a full scholly with the baseball team. That's why he was on an "unofficial" football visit. Especially since he could go MLB draft. Too big a risk for him to sign an LOI for football. If he gets to campus and eventually plays in a football game...THEN he will be an initial counter for the Football team...probably a 2019 initial counter.

A full scholarship for baseball is a big commitment from the baseball team since they only have 11.7 scholarships to give out amongst 24 players.

Wonder if he’s a grey shirt candidate....?

He wouldn’t count towards the 22 initial counters in this class.

And if he ends up getting drafted and signs with an MLB club, then it’s all a moot point.

So basically, he’s a blueshirt just in case he doesn’t go Pro in baseball. Also might not have to come to campus as a football scholarship initially. This is a no-brainer take under these circumstances. If he’s good enough to start, then football scholarship at that time to count forward to the next class.

What’s not to like here?!

Boom.

Can’t play football on a baseball scholly. Why don’t people know this? It’s the Bear Bryant rule. It doesn’t matter if he plays. If he signs scholarship papers on football NSD, it’s for football. Can’t claim you’re coming to play baseball when you’re signing on football NSD and you’ve just stated you’re on a full ride for football. He just UOV’d to save us some OV spots and to blue shirt but has nothing to do with UT baseball.

He’s Eddie Smith’s replacement. That’s all this is. Those sites are just slow to add 2* commits. If it’s not a big name they are slow.

But he hasn't signed on football nsd. Did he say full football scholarship? How can we think it has nothing to do with baseball when he so clearly stated his intention to play baseball?

My guess is that they are doing what they can to delay his initial counter so they can see what happens this summer with the baseball draft. If he signs a football scholarship next week, and then never shows up to campus because he gets drafted, it's a wasted scholarship for 2018. If we wait, and blueshirt him in the fall, then he just counts towards next year's class (2019), and we can use the 2018 scholarship on someone we know will be here next year.

All this assuming blueshirting is still a thing. I've yet to see that be determined.

He will be able to play both, but if he is on an athletic scholarship it must be a football scholarship. He has not signed yet (the next signing day is next month).

Davis will not sign scholarship papers for football on NSD. He will either sign a baseball scholarship or just show up to UT in the fall.

Mike Williams (the guy tied to the AJ Rape case) was on a track scholarship to UT a few years ago and was practicing with the football team. Once he played in a game, he had to be placed on a Football scholarship. He could do this because he was not "recruited" to play football.

Go back and look at the NCAA rules posted a few pages back. Davis could be on baseball scholly playing on the baseball team and also practice with the football team in the fall since he has not been officially "recruited" to play football. If he plays in a game, he would have to be placed on a football scholly at that time.

Plus UT has 55 official visits to give in 2018. Go to 247 and count up how many they have used. They have plenty left. No need not to allow Davis to "officially" visit unless they plan to blueshirt or use the baseball scholly.

Maybe this means nothing. Probably this means nothing. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands and I tend to over analyze things.

But....

Usually after a player commits... at least one person on the staff acknowledges it on twitter.

This is Brett Thiesen after Jordan Youngs commitment

This is Kevin Sherrer and Brian Niedermeyer after JJ Petersons commitment

[twitter]https://twitter.com/NiedermeyerB/status/949755280463663105[/twitter]

Et cetera

There's been no acknowledgement from the staff (unless I've missed it) via twitter. Nothing from Terry Fair, his primary recruiter. Nothing from Sherrer, from Rocker, from Pruitt, nothing from nobody.

It must be a scholarship for the highest revenue sport.

Yes. So I'm really hoping he's not a blue shirt.

2019 is such an important class for us.

I’d say it’s highly likely he doesn’t see the field in 2018, thus carrying this out potentially to the 2020 class. At that point, I’d have to research to see if he would be an initial qualifier, but I would assume so.

My thoughts as well. Taking a spot away from next year could come back to bite us.

Especially for a project like he seems to be

If he really is a project, then he won’t see the field and will remain on baseball scholarship. We can’t lose.
