LaMarcus Coker suspension

The worst part of this is the possible distraction. We ought to be talking about football. The team ought to be talking about football. Instead... we're talking about something incredibly stupid.

Glad it happened now instead of two or three weeks from now... Hopefully there's not another shoe to waiting to drop.

I know it's my first post...

Anyone else think that maybe, just maybe, that the loss of Coker Will affect the team?

Just saying, as a worst case scenario, that he misses at least half the season. That's last year's leading rusher, as well as this year's starting kick returner, gone. That may be a little of a problem compacted onto the wideout situation.

Granted, my true opinions are that Trooper Taylor can get any group of recievers up to par, the running backs can't do any worse than last year, the O-Line looks better than most believe, and It's a good thing to force one of our young Gamebreakers into the KR role.

Just throwin' that out there.

P.S. Hello Volnation!:)

I don't think anyone will argue that losing him won't affect the team. We just have to make do with the capable talent we have.

Welcome to the board. :hi:

Whatever, I hope Coker dosen't get the privilage to wear the orange again,we don't need him representing us as alumnis,a fan-base,and an athletic department if he is going to make unwise choices. Doning the orange comes at a price and that is representing the millions of Big Orange fans with a good name, and giving your all on the field. That is all that you are requiered of to have your education payed for, and your future taken care of ,whether you play in the NFL or not. These kids have the world given to them, and yet they throw it away like disposable razor. With that said, whether it hurts our team in the long-run (which it will) I say ODIOS to Mr. Coker.

IMO this is good for the team, focus on the players that want be out there and who want to help tennessee win, that being FOSTER AND HARDESTY, this is prime time for them my friends, DO IT

Yeah, but you also want the guys who can break out for 80 yard runs.

We need Coker....especially since we'll need so much more production from the running game. This is not good news.

Here is Fulmer's official statement.

"LaMarcus Coker has been suspended indefinitely from the Tennessee football team. He must fulfull obligations to the program and to me before he can return. I have tried, the administration has tried and we all will continue trying to help him, but at this point he must help himself."

"I will not comment again until a later date, after I see how he responds."

Sounds to me like Big Green strikes again.

Legalize Big Green!

Just looked it up, and MJ can stay in you system anywhere from 2 days to 11 weeks. So if he goes through the counseling, and passes the drug test, he could be back before the Cal game. Probably get some kind of suspension though.

Obviously you have smoked way to much. Its harmful to your body. Your body is the temple of God. Its a very serious problem.

Intro:
Are you even being serious, or is that sarcasm? I'm going to proceed with my post under the assumption that you were serious....even though it bothers me to think that you actually believe the words you typed.

Body of Response:
No, actually you're sort of wrong about that. Weed really isn't particularly serious at all. Its actually legal in several countries...you should make a trip. It may be a while before its de jure legalized in the US, but as more states allow for medical marijuana, it will eventually be de facto legal.

Weed is *absolutely* more innocuous than alcohol and *absolutely positively* more innocuous than cigarettes.

I'm conservative on many issues, but there is no justifiable reason that alcohol (a drug) is legal and weed (a drug) is illegal. It's more of a historical accident than anything. People have been drinking beer for centuries so it just got embedded into our culture as being benign. Weed doesn't have the same lengthy history and so it never got a stare decisis pass from the public...that's why its illegal. Its not because its more harmful than alcohol.

Have you ever known of anyone who died because of too much alcohol intake? Odds are you probably have.
Have you ever known of anyone OD'ing on weed? I bet my mortgage you haven't.

And, please, don't come back and quote something from the current administration. Pull an article on the topic from a respected scientific publication and give it a read. Then get back to me.

Or just tell me that your post was sarcastic and I'll feel much better about the world I live in.

I didn't realize being slow for a tailback, constantly fumbling, and being hurt all the time constituted "talent."

Hatvol is right. Coker has proven on the field that he is our best back. I like foster a lot, but he doesn't have coker's big-play capability.

James Banks? Is that you?

I've actually never been a big fan of pot. I don't touch the stuff. But for reasons already stated, I don't think it should be illegal.

Forgive me if I got off topic (Sorry mods), but I couldn't help but challenge the validity of the "weed will kill you" theme of this thread (I'm still hoping it was all sarcasm).

Hey guys, I know this is probably a bad place to put a first post.....but, am I missing something? We have to answer alot of questions as far as a better run blocking oline, new recievers and a defense that can stop the run. I guess I don't see where losing a second string running back for a time is that big a deal. Go Vols

First off, let me apologize if my post is viewed as threadcrapping or hijacking as this is not my intent. This is my first time visiting this messageboard, and the reason I came was because I saw that Coker was suspended on ESPN.com, and being a Cal fan I wanted to gather as much information as I could. I had no intention of registering an account or posting anything, but I felt the need to after reading the posts from/to Teddy. Being as it's almost 3am and I have work in the morning. I'm going to do the rest via bullet points.

- I am a Cal alum, and also consider myself to be a huge Cal fan, as such some of my comments may be a bit biased, but that's what's great about being a fan of any team. As such, please don't think that I'm typing this up as fact. This is my opinion and mine alone, I do not represent Cal Nation, nor does Teddy.

- Like I said earlier, this is the only thread I've read on the board, so I cannot comment on any earlier conversations that took place b/w Teddy and Vol Nation. I do hope that he was able to represent us with the class/dignity that I feel most Cal fans possess. If not, I hope that Vol Nation responded with the class/dignity that I've seen from the few Tenn fans I've come across.

- In this thread it was mentioned that Tedford is overrated and classes (i.e. leaving the starters in when Fulmer called of the dogs). In MY homer-like opinion I would have to disagree on both points. I believe the measure of any coach is how well they can get their players to perform given their level of talent. Tedford's long list of high drafted QB's has been well documented. To me this goes to validate that Tedford is in fact a good coach, and not overrated. He was able to get enough out of barely-talented players(i.e. a.smith, boller) to make the scouts mistakenly overvalue them. In regards to Tedford's class, there have been many times when he could have run up the score but instead would run out the clock or turnover the ball on possessions deep in their opponent's red zone. This was viewed by some as part of the reason why Texas went to the Rose Bowl over Cal a few years ago. I think his intention of leaving his starters in the game last year, was not to try to diminish the margin, but rather to build confidence in some of his less experienced players who he would need to perform well for the rest of the year, like Longshore.

- As a Cal fan I am very happy with the recent success that we've had, especially given the years we had to endure with Holmoe at the helm. I also can acknowledge that as a program we are nowhere near UT. Your program has enjoyed many many many years of success, and because of that I am jealous. That being said, this is also why this game is so big to us Cal fans. A win would be a major step in the right direction towards becoming not just a good football team, but to a good program.

- In regards to Coker, I do not feel too sorry for him, because it's the bed he made. However, I do hope that he gets the treatment that he needs, and is able to put this behind him. In fact, I hope that he is able to do this before September comes around, because while I am a Cal fan, I'm a football fan first. If we are able to win the game on Sept 1st, I also don't want there to be any gripes of what could have been. Let's just put our best teams out there and enjoy what should be a great game.

- Best of luck on your season, and here's me hoping that this time Tedford will be calling off the dogs. Hey... I'm still a Cal fan....

p.s. I hope I remember to come back and check for replies to my post. I will not get into a 'war of words', with any respondents, but if anyone has any questions or want to hear another Cal fan's opinion, feel free to ask.

Welcome to the Nation. Can't wait to come out to Berkely in a few weeks!

Left work yesterday and didn't check the Internet or watch sports last night. Hell of a thing to wake up to this morning. Skimmed through the whole thread and it appears all has been said and over specualted already. Just adding my dissappointment to the others and hope this is a minor slap on the wrist rather then a major one.

:eek:lol:

Thanks for the laugh. I don't know how I missed this one.

I'd love to know why this is so funny? I don't care if you want to call it an addiction or not, but obviously Lamarcus is having a problem with cannabis. And I really hope your not taking shots at my religious belief.

I just spent about a hour sifting through all this dribble about Coker and how we are now doomed. You've got to be kidding me! Coker's no messiah. We are FINE. Foster will get the job done. Coker will be back- I agree with the move on CPF's part. They've giving him too many chances. If this doesn't hit home, nothing will.

I tried to read through the posts and find it, but where is it being reported that this all stems from failed drug tests? Can someone post this info?
