On very few occasions it is appropriate to hold the drug companies accountable. Xanax, for instance, was marketed as non-addictive, which it most certainly is not. In these cases the Drs. are sold a bill of goods from the pharm reps.
The flip side is once these people become addicts, they can account for hundreds of dollars in administrative costs for docs. They call incesantly, and become a huge liability. By then, they have dropped all sense of personal responsibility, they want their drugs, and they don't care how they get them.
