Latest Bowl Projections; One SEC teams gets a BCS Bowl?!

And, according to what the media has said over the past 10 seasons, we (UT) are no longer one of the most sought after because we dont "travel" as well to the bowl games as we once did. I have heard, true or not, the reasoning being we had gotten too pampered and used to playing in the big games, that "our fans" lose interest if we end up in one of the mid level bowls, coupled with the string of Citrus trips, etc. I dont know, Id love to be able to travel to all of the bowl games, no matter which one or where.
there's some truth to that...once you go to Orlandod 3-4 times, Atlanta 2-3 times in the span of 10 years..it's hard to get motivated to keep doing it over and over again especially when it's your dime you're spending to make the trip....

I remember the 96 Citrus bowl agaisnst OSU...place was half orange...Cotton bowl in 90...also half orange. both bowls were bigger back then.

the one thing the BCS has done is it has cast a shadow on the other bowls, and going to a new year's day bowl for "traditional powers" so to speak isn't what it used to be.

If this system isn't fair then why are we using it?????

The SEC effectively agreed to one team from the SEC getting an opportunity to play in a BCS game and the rest get screwed. With no guarantee that an undefeated SEC teams gets to play for the NC. Its a joke. Why does the SEC want to continue to participate?

Roy Kramer, former SEC commish, invented this system. along with the conf. championship game.

if you want to talk about unfair, i think you have to look at the conf. championship games that we, the Big 12 and ACC play. it is effectively an elimination game.

if neither UF or ARK have to play in that game, they are both in the BCS. ARK as SEC champ and UF as an at large, based on ARK's undfeated conf. record and UF's BCS ranking. but since they both have to play...one is looking at the very real possibility that they will not get the BCS invite.

the system isn't perfect. but in most cases, it has worked itself out...as it will this year. the worst thing that could happen this year is if there is a rematch of the OSU/Mich game in the NT game. Then i would completely agree about not being fair. the one rule i would like to see added to the NT qualifier is that you must win your conference. And i would like to see all conf champions crowned the same way...conf. championship game or not, but all should be crowned the same.
I would rather see TX or USC/Cal with two losses play the winner of that game than to see a re-match. And i would definitely rather see a one loss SEC champ play the winner of that game than a rematch.

and to answer your question: Money. bottom line.

I am completely in favor of dropping the SEC champ game and playing nothing but cupcakes instead of teams from the SEC west.

I think that perception is out there. The $20,000 (actually a lot more than that) question for the people in charge of the Outback and Peach bowls will be whether or not the UT fans having been without a bowl last year will be ready to travel in droves this year even if it is to abowl that they might otherwise pinch their nose at. If UT wins out IMO it would be hard for the Outback to pass on a 9-win UT to take a 7-8 win KY or UGA. The Outback does not have to take a team from the SEC East though, so you could have something like this even if UT wins out:

1. Sugar: UF-Arky winner
2. Capitol One: UF-Arky loser, AU or LSU
3. Cotton: Arky, AU or LSU
4. Outback: UF, AU or LSU
5. Chick-Fil-A: UGA goes for sure sell-out
6. Liberty: Bama figures Vol fans will not travel to Memphis twice in one year
7. Music City: KY, SC or UT KY and UT are similar distances from Nashville with large fanbases in the area. Might even be some pressure to take SC in hopes of filling the hotels with more overnight travelers if their fans show up. There would be big pressure to take UT if they are available but it would not be a lock and the sports council might take someone else just to prove that they are autonomous.
8. Independence (the dreaded Weedeater): KY, SC or UT

I know this is a little out-of-left field but IMO it is within the range of possibility. Also, this is based on UT winning out. A loss to either KY or Vandy almost makes the Vols a lock for Nashville or Shreeveport, especially if SC beats Clemson and UGA beats GA Tech.

Is your friend a direct descendent of Jefferson Davis? That's not the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard, but it's not far from it.

My projections:

Sugar: Ark
Capital One: FL
Cotton: Auburn
Outback: LSU
Peach/Chickfillet: GA
Liberty: SC
Music City: Kentucky
Weedeater: Bama
UT: Screwed

Someone from the SEC is getting screwed and not going to a bowl game. Its most likely Kentucky or UT.

SI had the ninth team taking one of the unused Big 10 slots so i think all nine could get in... a 9-3 Tennessee team won't get screwed. I may be very ticked at Fulmer and Co. at the moment, but get realistic

1. There are bids out there besides the automatic conference tie-ins.
2. The conference hierarchy will not allow 9-3 Tennessee to fall below all those 5 and 6 loss teams in the bowl process.

I thought the conference hierarchy turned in their backbones when they joined the BCS? They are all spineless now.

CBS Sportsline shows us in the Peach with Florida playing for the NC. Let's wait and see where we end up. We'll be 9-3 after the regular season and we may move up to the Outback.

Peach Bowl wants GA being the local favorite.
Music City Bowl most likely would want UT or Kty for the same reason.
Liberty would get SC or Kty for the same reason.
Weedeater would want Bama for the same reason.

Someone is left out in the cold, I expect its Kentucky, Considering they havent played in a bowl game in so long it might be UT.

Yes point #1 is a fact. I think the Poinsettia Bowl has an at-large slot which would have gone to Army but they will not get to 6 wins this year.

I agree with point #2 EXCEPT I do think the Liberty Bowl would take anyone over UT except, maybe, SC.

Did I miss something in geography class? How close is Columbia, SC to Memphis?

I agree that's about a 10 hr drive.

But where else do you put SC thats closer? Maybe in the Music City Bowl and Kentucky or UT in the Liberty Bowl?

This isn't going to be decided solely on geography. The SEC office is not going to have a situation where multiple 5/6 loss teams take priority over a 9-3 team. The Peach Bowl likes to tout itself as one of the best non-BCS bowls out there. They aren't going to take an unranked 5 or 6 loss team over a 9-3 team in the top 20.

again... there are tie ins to other conferences music city wants, liberty wants will change if UT is still somehow sitting there. a 9-3 Tennessee team will not get left out. this is ridiculous

Liberty Bowl is already licking their chops for Bama. The Bear coached in the first Liberty Bowl in 1959. Also, as we all know, there are many Bama boosters and fans in that part of the state (Gallion joke omitted). It's history. It's relatively close. People will go to the game. AND UT already played there once this year.

If UT beats Vandy and UK they go no lower then the Cotton or Peach bowl.
