Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

If you are sick you shouldn’t work. Even remotely. You are slowing down your own recovery. My assumption is that subs won’t be “scared”, not saying you are claiming that’s how you feel, about reporting to an empty classroom. And they work part time for a reason.

You couldn’t pay me enough to be a substitute teacher. They get put through some crap at times for relatively low pay and no benefits

We had a substitute that we called "rubber lips" Bless her heart, she was elderly and had lips that looked like something from a cartoon.

I'd say it's a very real possibility that many boards haven't thought that far ahead, yes. Wouldn't you? How in the world would a sub function in a remote learning environment? Didn't you start this with a claim about teachers who didn't want to have to go to the school to teach remotely? My question was about having to take sick days if someone felt well enough to teach from home.

Oh, and BTW, be thankful you live in a district in which the board provides ample funding for subs. Some districts allocate a small amount and pass that cost back onto the schools, and those schools have small budgets.
And with teaching remotely, I doubt it will be that hard to combine 4th grade classes for a day or two. Virtual learning should scare the crap out of teachers. If it proves to be even close to as effective as in class then a whole lot of teacher jobs go bye bye

I'm not buying a subscription to the Washington Post. If student athletes don't want to play, next man up. If you don't understand the economic impact(s) of playing SEC football this fall, you need to get an education. Are there risks? Sure! People are suffering brain damage, bad knees, all sorts of things from playing football. There are people dying from cancer, wrecks, heart disease, alzheimer's, gun violence, and on and on. I support opening up and playing. If you do not play, you lose your scholarship. Simple as that. This concept of taxpayers or fans paying for you to get an education and not playing football or working to pay for it is ridiculous. That dog don't hunt. It is a free country. Free not to work and free to go get a job.
I agree with some of what you're saying the problem for me is the kids do not get paid. Yes they get a free education but all adults around them are millionaires. The kids should have concerns.

I don’t disagree with that.

Neither do most Americans unfortunately, that is why they are hard to find. Substitute teachers, bus drivers, custodians, and cafeteria workers are woefully underpaid. I can’t speak for other states but cafeteria workers in Georgia get 12$ per month towards retirement for every year they work. So, if you worked for 40 years you would make 480$ a month before taxes and insurance when you retire

from the Association of American Medical Colleges :

" If the nation does not change its course - and soon- deaths in the United States could well be into the multiple of hundreds of thousands."

And FYI....Members of the AAMC include all 155 medical schools in the US, all 17 medical schools in Canada and more than 400 teaching hospitals.

You have bloated state pensions from years past to blame for that. Grossly overpaid the past to screw the future. Kind of like what’s about to happen to our kids and grandkids because we are selfish asses.

Asia and Europe are months ahead of us. Show me the stories of large numbers with second infections. Go.
That’s the point. I’m not here to tell you that you are wrong. I’m here to say your statement is unfounded. It has yet to be proven true. In a world with so many unknowns with a virus that has the potential to strike down are loved ones, many people understandably err on the side of caution. Yet, you mock them. Maybe those athletes are not concerned about themselves but rather the thought of catching and spreading a virus to their families. Many of you make this about 20 year old and no risk but somehow conveniently dismiss the fact that they would easily spread this virus to others once infected. All I’m saying is why get so alarmed and upset at those who take in the whole picture make rationale and selfless decisions regarding their actions.
Many make this about kids, a scholarship, and a football and others talk about cautious measures to protect life yet somehow the money and the sport are on the right side? Look, I would love to see football but I cannot and will not judge those who act out of caution and a respect for human life.

I'm not mocking any of our athletes. If they dont want to participate, then dont.

But get out of the way for the ones that do.

Throw out some more political talking points. Sure, the virus is only a problem in cities, and with the governments in those cities, and blame should be laid at the feet of "rioters" but of course not the legions of anti-mask idiots attending Trump rallies or descending on Florida beaches.

And while we're at it, let's imply that my friends' parents "actually died of something else" when you don't know them at all. Great post

Nothing I posted was factually inaccurate. If you perceived it as political, then that's on you. Contrary to what you may think, I did not mean to imply anything about your friends' parents. Obviously I don't know them and I was not trying to dispute your account of what happened to them.

Well said.

So my phone autocorrected. Nice of you to point that out.

It doesent protect you so why should anyone wear one? It does however put you at risk for other terrible things to happen.
It is unfortunate that people who know nothing about the virus or the epidemiology of the virus post absolutely misinformation about the facts. Science are accurate data which are collected and analyzed and peer reviewed. Get up to date.

So you think teachers, bus drivers, custodians and cafeteria workers are underpaid? If you are a product of their education system, the proper way to represent money is $12.00 or $480.00 not 12$ or 480$. Be that as it may, get a real job if you want to make real money. Working 6 months out of the year as a teacher or anyone connected to the school system doesn't qualify someone for a big paycheck.
