Scientists say the coronavirus is at least as deadly as the 1918 flu pandemic

The coronavirus is at least as deadly as the 1918 flu pandemic and the death toll could even be worse if world leaders and public health officials fail to adequately contain it, researchers warned in a study published Thursday in the medical journal JAMA Network Open.

“What we want people to know is that this has 1918 potential,” lead author Dr. Jeremy Faust said in an interview, adding the outbreak in New York was at least 70% as bad as the one in 1918 when doctors didn’t have ventilators or other advances to help save lives like they do today. “This is not something to just shrug off like the flu.”

Researchers compared excess deaths in New York City during the peak of the 1918 pandemic with those during the first few months of the Covid-19 outbreak. They used public data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the U.S. Census Bureau to conduct their analysis.

Then let's get back to work and play ball like they did in 1918.

So they are basically discounting all advances in modern medicine when they get this percentage. What a crock. Check out the quote:

The increase in deaths during the 1918 flu pandemic was higher overall, but comparable to that observed in the first two months of the coronavirus outbreak in New York City, the researchers found. But when taking into account improvements in hygiene, modern medicine and public health, the increase during the early coronavirus outbreak was “substantially greater” than during the peak of the 1918 pandemic, the researchers wrote.

Then let's get back to work and play ball like they did in 1918.

Heh. Actually, the 1918 football season was alot like ours probably will be...

Some teams opted not to play, others did.

All games came to a screeching halt when the 2nd wave hit in Sept/Oct, 1918.

I see two problems with this analysis already:

1) it’s isolated to NYC, where the response was botched by Cuomo and Co., leading to a lot of self inflicted damage

2) even though the author states that it was only 70% as bad (still not sure how he concluded this) he makes the logical leap that it must be just as bad because technology is better today

TIFWIW

But he's a scientist, how dare you question his research?

Not all games came to halt.

But did we shut the country down and force the economy to collapse?

Yeah I was calling BS on it too but decided not to say anything bc I’m not there and don’t know for sure what it’s like at individual hospitals... I can only truly speak for the ones I am associated with.... The hospitals are fine but the SNF are struggling and I’m afraid that may get worse.
I've been on 4 different floors in my new hospital. 2 vented covid19 pts out of 56 vent available beds. The vented pts are not new either, they are already trached to vent and have been there well over a month. We have positive cases that are on regular floors but not that many.
There are 4 snfs within one mile and they are at capacity with no transfer room.

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to call BS on this article. "Scientists say" was nowhere in the headline.

I'll help you with your skepticism:

The research involved 100,000 people testing themselves at home for coronavirus antibodies between June 20 and July 13. The government said there is no firm evidence that antibodies provide immunity.

There was no breakthrough on the quest for a home antibody test for general use among the public. Separate studies, also unveiled on Thursday, evaluated a range of finger-prick home antibody tests but found the results were not reliable enough to be given government approval for widespread use, officials said. The tests were still deemed to be suitable for surveillance studies such as the Imperial research.

We don’t have any covid patients here yet but I have heard rumor that the transfer building is full so unless they come up with a different plan.... we will be keeping some in my building soon.... What state are you in now?

that means 5% of their population had it while the US cases/population had 1.6%
Actually, it would suggest that possibly 16% of the U.S. has had it. This, obviously, would be fantastic news if true, with what we are learning about herd immunity and T cell protection.

Nonsense.

Antibody titers are exactly how we screen for immunity to a whole host of different infections.

I just quoted the article. Not reliable enough for the public, but yet used at home for the study, unless there are actually two different tests being discussed.
