Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

I'm am no way an expert on politics or covid19. But can someone explain to me why people are saying this is political. The entire world is dealing with this virus not just the United States.

It's certainly being politicized, but what isn't these days? Still, the idea that a world wide pandemic is some kind of political invention is just insane.

People who don't believe COVID is a big deal and don't believe in taking any kind of precaution themselves or people who think this is all a big political hoax designed to get Trump out of office.
It's not a big deal for the vast majority of this country. It's a statistical blip for those under a certain age or of an adequate health level

Because there's no other real way to explain the continued overreaction after 5 months of lockdown. It's no longer about health

Probably more reasons than I have room to type or you have patience to read. First there's a sizable divide among those who think that the virus was intentionally unleashed ( I'm in that camp), and those that think it was an innocent mistake. Next there's about a million different opinions along party lines differing on what the proper reaction to the virus should have been and what it should be going forward. I would be considered a conservative and my biggest grievance with the government over this is that I believe we should have shut down all incoming travel in January

I agree we should have shutdown earlier

So why the difference reaction to Covid-19 in 2020 as compared to H1N1 (Swine Flu) in 2009?
  • Covid-19; 4 million infected in the U.S.
  • H1N1; 60.8 million infected in the U.S.
There was no vaccine. 151,700 to 575,400 people died world wide. Zero panic. Zero over reaction.

H1N1, estimated 60 million US cases, estimated 12,000 US deaths. Mortality rate 0.02%
Covid19, 5,630,193 US cases, 174,338 US deaths. Mortality rate (at the moment) 3.0%

See the difference?

Let's go out into speculation land, and say that in addition the 5.6 million cases we know about, that there's at least another 25 million. Even if that's the case, we are still looking at a mortality rate of .7% which is would still make Covid19 35 times more deadly than H1N1.

You're still in lockdown? I have family in NYC, and even they haven't been in lockdown since June.
Nyc is still very much closed.

We're not technically in a lockdown but certain segments of this country are. Most who can are still working from home. Restaurants aren't at full capacity. Entire states have their schools closed. Fines and arrests for not wearing a mask

It's enough to be considered a lockdown

The mortality rate is not 3%. Jeez.

The disease itself isnt political. Unless you think its racist, and then I guess its political. Not sure who you make the argument with though.

The political side comes in the response. Specifically on where the threshold of concern is vs over reaction.

Imo Trump hasnt set a threshold so the measures taken often go beyond what is reasonable in his supporters opinions because of that. The Dems, largely imo because Trump hasnt set a standard, set their own.

Thus a line has been drawn and the slap fight began. But it's all about the reaction/response.

So you have "alternative math" to coincide with your "alternative facts"?

At the moment that is the mortality rate as computed until there is an accurate estimate of total cases.
We didnt do 60 million H1N1 tests. That's the extrapolated number. I cant even find a total number of tests. But this one national lab system did about 75k tests. Most others did about the same number overall. Would love to see a total. But I doubt you are getting much more than a million actual tests.

So if you want to use 3% for Covid you need to use something like 1% for H1N1. Probably higher. Because the example above says they were getting about 50% positive, vs our current Covid testing of about 5% positive. But again much more actual testing.

Even with the multipliers you used on Covid dont come close to the multipliers used on H1N1 when they extrapolated the numbers.

Has nothing to do with math and more to do with common sense and understanding terms.

Go find a current or recent scientific journal estimating a 3% mortality rate. Please come back when you have found that, not before.

It's enough to be considered a lockdown

Compared with where we were in April, I'm not sure how the status quo can be considered a lockdown. Same can be said for NYC. Things are much looser now. Having to wear a mask when you go out is not the same thing as having no place to go at all.

I'm on day 2 of virtual schooling for my kid and it is chaos and I'm about to throw my kid's school computer out of the window. There has been frustration, tears, and breakdowns. I only have 9 more weeks of this, minimum.

The fear peddlers and Karen's can go to hell. Every last one of you. This is ridiculous.

There was an H1N1 vaccine. But to your point, there was no election in 2009. If there were there would be none of what we see now. Why? Obama. The man could literally have dropped a deuce on the Constitution and wiped his aaa with the American flag and people would have cheered him.

Now compare it to last August
