Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Yet no one can point to any data that says masks slowed the infection rate.
India had a mask mandate with fines equivalent to $500 here, police in the streets writing tickets for offenders. They could find few if any people to write tickets for in public. Delta ripped through India all the same.

As much as I tire of the mask mob mentality, I also think it is slippery to compare places of such dissimilar hygiene, clean water, infrastructure, population density, and use of public transportation.

Here we go again. Worshiping the almighty mask. Masks are part of the recommendations. They aren't the only recommendation. They are the most visible. You don't know if those who go sans mask are following distancing or hand washing guidelines. And with the comparisons between states with different approaches to mask mandates now available, I believe distancing and washing are more important than masking.
The only thing that absolutely works is distancing.

If no one is convincing anyone of anything here right now, are we just posting things to chest thump and have a pep rally for those who agree with our positions?

Is anyone actually open to changing their minds without a major revelation that changes the game for everyone?

I see it, people are definitely changing their minds, you see it with the huge increase in vaccination in the lowest vaccinated states.

Yes

No

Because masks aren't 100% effective doesn’t mean we shouldn't use them, it’s like saying that since people die wearing seatbelts we shouldn't use those either.
Damn you and your logic! Don't you know the good is, and always must remain, the enemy of the perfect.

He's prohibiting them from a mandate but students are allowed to wear as they wish. We got an email yesterday that our schools encourage masks but they are still optional.

Personally I think he has overstepped with this ban and local systems should be allowed to make their own decisions. He wouldn't like the feds telling him how to run his state

Yep. It's basically equivalent to a mandate not to do something. It's fine not to have a state level mask mandate or vax passport mandate but let the localities or individual businesses decide what's best for them.

I am willing to change my stance on masks if someone is able to show me a study that provides strong evidence that masks are more than a nominal benefit.

Yes, I've been debating on whether to get the vaccine or continue to rely on previous infection antibodies. Problem is finding good data to help in making that decision.

This is where I wish the data would improve. Things are presented as either vague (eg. better, more likely, less likely) or binary (protected or not protected). I only recall one study discussed here on the efficacy of masks from real world usage (concluded a small reduction in the rate of growth of the spread) and I haven't seen any about the magnitude of improved protection from vax on top of naturally acquired immunity.
