Why do they have multi-organ failure?
Since they decided that ventilation early on was bad and switched treatment plans, the pt would get their 5 days of remdesivir and sit on a step down unit on hiflow O2 or bipap until they went into respiratory failure. In this process the body runs out of reserve to compensate for the lack of oxygen and begins producing lactic acid. The pH would be 7.0 (7.35 to 7.45 is normal) and the 2 ways our body compensate for that low pH is respiratory and metabolic, lungs and kidneys. We breath faster to blow off CO2 too make us less acidotic that’s the first mechanism that kicks in immediately. How long can a body sustain a respiratory rate of 35 to 40 before they run out of energy? The second is the kidney by producing bicarbonate to neutralize the acidosis but that takes a few days to kick in.

They usually came to icu with a pH of 7.0 in complete metabolic and respiratory acidosis. This condition will lead to decreased bp and a low flow state furthering kidney damage, damaging the liver, hypoxia plus low flow state will put them into a decreased level of consciousness. They are usually loopy and pulling off all their monitoring equipment at that point. They are completely decompensated and we intervene at that point, remember ventilation is bad.
They end up getting a ventilator, a bicarbonate drip, sedation meds, pain meds and pressors to keep their blood pressure up. We always start feeding them through the tube as soon as possible.
Mind you when I talk about being decompensated they have not eaten a full meal, they are getting IV fluids because the simple act of eating and drinking takes a tremendous amount of energy. You have to have nutrition to heal and carry on fighting.
That’s what I saw with every case of covid with the remdesivir treatment over the last 2 years in 4 different hospitals that I traveled to.

The good news is we haven’t had a covid case for 2 weeks. The previous 6 weeks only 2 cases that were incidental finding of covid. The virus or it’s variants are much less virulent and cases are disappearing. Everyone tested in the ER comes back negative.
Sorry for the novella. I have always found the human body incredible and left out a mass of information in that process I described.

No apology necessary. These real world stories are so much more interesting/believable than the crap that we hear on the 'news'.

At Publix on UT campus today. Quite a few young mask wearers. Some will never recover.
Dumbasses.
This reminds me of watching old WWII footage of Japanese citizens jumping off cliffs when Americans invaded their islands. I always wondered how their government could have brainwashed them so completely. Now I know. History has judged the Japanese government during WWII as cruel, evil and just plain wrong. I wonder how history will judge our government 2 or 3 generations from now?

It’ll depend on who writes the history book.

I just got a text message from the TN dept of health telling me that it was time to get another booster in order to protect me from severe covid infection. Just to make sure I understood it, they repeated it in Spanish. I'm done with the vaccine, with boosters, face masks and everything covid related.

The only kid I saw in my office today with a "mask" came in for follow up after an ER visit for recurrent chest pain (previously worked up extensively with reassuring findings). Over the past two years, he has developed severe hypochondriasis and is insistent on pulling his cloth gaiter up quickly (with his hands) anytime in public.

It's very sad what has been done to our youth.

Welcome to the dark side.

So during the NCAA title game there was a commercial for their(Pfizer) therapeutic pill that kicks Covid in the ass. I noticed that it suggested to seek treatment for this pill if you get Covid and you are in the HIGH RISK group.

Wtf. So basically fear the Covid enough for treatment only if you’re in the high risk group. So basically that corresponds to the same advice us dopes have been giving about going about your life normally for the past 2 years unless you’re in the high risk group. Jackasses.

My favorite part of this is that those ads were explicitly paid for by our tax dollars.

Nothing better than funding the marketing budget of a multi-billion dollar multinational! Oh wait, there is something better! Funding their marketing budget and then being forced to buy the useless product that they're marketing!

I saw a kid on the playground at school wearing a mask yesterday. 5th grader, outside in a wide open space. That kid is damaged.
There's about a dozen older kids that help in the car line dropoff at my kid's school. There's usually at least 2 wearing masks. Outside on the sidewalk with at least a car length between them. I can't tell if it's the kid's choice or their parents have told them to do it and they're afraid to get caught.
