Coronavirus: Flu is deadlier, more widespread than Wuhan, China, virus

So far, there have been an estimated 19 million cases of flu, 180,000 hospitalizations and 10,000 deaths in the U.S. this influenza season – including 68 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Worldwide, seasonal influenza epidemics cause 3 million to 5 million severe cases every year and kill up to 650,000 people a year, according to the World Health Organization.

In a bad year, influenza kills up to 61,000 Americans, according to the CDC.

Depends on the age group. Overall, I believe it is usually around 0.01% (1 for every 10,000 diagnosed). The mortality rate for children and otherwise-healthy younger adults is more like 0.001% (1 in 100,000). The H1N1 pandemic reached around 0.1%, IIRC.

Reviewing the past couple of years' data, the overall mortality of influenza is actually around 1 in 1,000 in the U.S., but that number is strongly influenced by the elderly population.

Another way to understand this: it is approximately 100x deadlier in those 65+ than for children and young adults.

I don't believe that number for deaths, I bet it's three or four times that number if not more.

Sooo, went to Kroger with the wife and as some of you know I’ve been pretty sick over this past week. Still have a nasty cough but pretty good otherwise. So we’re in the line to check out and I start coughing, wife said something like you need to go to the dr, I said “it’ll pass I didn’t start coughing until I go back from China”.

The stares were precious.

Thanks, I saw those. I just never saw if @hog88 responded. I would think that everyone would agree but hog is such an individual freedoms "trumping" societal risks kind of guy, I was just wondering if this met his threshold. I'm beginning to think he is intentionally avoiding answering.
