Using HIV meds...not drugs most folks have encountered before so it does make sense people could have a positive reaction to them.

That brings up another question. I’ve understood for decades that bats and rats carry diseases since being told that as a child, but I don’t recollect all these animal to human virus outbreaks in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.

Have these bat viruses mutated to make human transmission easier or has society done this to ourselves with the massive reliance and overuse of antibiotics in everything, to the point our own immune systems are confused and virtually useless?🤔

I could support voluntary quarantine.

Due to the asymptomatic contagious incubation period of this particular virus voluntary quarantine is problematic. One could be a contagious carrier yet show no symptoms and due to that refuse to voluntarily quarantine. Is it okay then that they continue with normal life and go out and infect folks? What’s the magic number of transmissions where it’s no longer okay for them to infect others? Even with the fluctuations and uncertainties of the R0 in this coronavirus it’s currently still considered at baseline to be about twice as infectious as the flu.

With all the still unknowns and new contagion information on this coronavirus coming out on an almost daily basis, leaving a quarantine decision up to an individual could be an extremely dangerous undertaking.

I'd like to know the ethnicity of the infected individuals in the US. Are there any infected white Americans or are all 8 of these people Chinese or of Chinese descent?
I remember the stories saying they have just recently visited Wuhan so my guess would be Chinese Americans visiting for the Chinese new year.

Mob rule usually leads to oppression.
Yea, that's what the mandatory quarantine is, mob rule.
I think you understand the ridiculousness of your position when carried to extreme.
I also understand your reluctance to concede that, as with almost all things, there is a reasonable and rational line.
Because then you would have to deal with how that line is established and adjusted.

So, in hog's world: A plane carrying 220 people from Wuhan lands in Nashville. Hog meets them and says, it would be nice if you guys would quarantine yourselves, but your individual freedoms over the next 14 days are more important than the unnecessary and unknowable risks you present to millions of innocent people. 210 right minded people immediately and voluntarily quarantine themselves. Ten, for ultimately selfish reasons, avoid the request to quarantine.

As opposed to, in a rational and reasonable world: A plane carrying 220 people from Wuhan lands in Nashville. They are informed that, even though individual rights are highly respected and protected, because of the unnecessary and avoidable risk they pose to millions of innocent people, they will be placed in quarantine for 14 days. 210 say of course, that's only appropriate. Ten say damn, that's not right, but are forced into quarantine against their wishes.

You can always put em up at your place.

I have no problem with a mandatory quarantine being forced on anyone that's been there.

5.1 magnitude earthquake in Chengdu today. Not that China is hurting for resources, but between that, the bird flu, and nCov-19, they can't be having a good time right now.

In luther’s dictatorial world people know “I’m getting locked up” if I get get on that plane so some sneak by to avoid being quarantined. So instead of getting tested, getting the information and giving themselves and the authorities the opportunity to monitor them they put even more people at risk.

You would be surprised how many more people will do the right thing when they are just given the opportunity instead of being forced at the end of a gun.

Using an experimental drug tells me this guy was very sick and nothing was working.

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

“To my knowledge, this is the first reported case in the world where this drug has been used in a human application against this virus,” Jay Cook, chief medical officer at the center, told reporters on a conference call Friday. “At the time, we felt the benefits of using this drug outweighed whatever potential risk there might be and we obtained his informed consent.”

The patient’s pneumonia appeared to improve within a day, with no obvious side effects, after the intravenous drug was administered, his doctors reported in the New England Journal of Medicine Friday. The finding should encourage randomized, controlled clinical trials to determine its safety and efficacy for treating 2019-nCoV infections, they said.

The drug was approved for use on compassionate grounds. It’s not licensed or approved anywhere in the world, and hasn’t been demonstrated to be safe or effective for any use, Foster City, California-based Gilead said in a statement.

China has tested their own people and found they are positive for past exposure to viruses from bats and many other animals. They just aren't very virulent viruses.
This one's different. It's very virulent and Ive seen enough to say I think it's bioengineered. JMO.
Antibiotics are curative for bacteria until they aren't. They mutate and become resistant. We go to the next gen antibiotic that will kill the specific defense the bacteria developed. We are on some 6th generation cephalosporins in rare cases. We do have people dying from being resistant to everything but it's rare.

The immune system has multiple ways to attack invaders, unfortunately the average diet often doesn't keep the immune system at its peak. I see people everyday who don't eat right and take much longer to heal and recover from illness.

I've seen a few reports this morning that China's CSRC (trading regulators) are ordering the suspension of short selling for all stocks beginning tomorrow. I think that could cause an even bigger sell off in other markets (ours).

Edit: I meant to put this in the stock thread....stock futures and asian markets tonight will be interesting.
