Lawrence Frank - Boston Celtics Assistant

"The Celtics have not been approached by Tennessee about conversations with Frank, a former Tennessee assistant who has never run a program on the collegiate level.
“All I know is that Lawrence is under contract with us for the rest of the season,” Danny Ainge said this morning. “Right now he’s committed to helping us win our next NBA title this year.”

That means...nothing.

An interesting parallel between the Vols and Memphis occurred to me when thinking about Franks being the new coach. Calipari had been fired from an NBA head coaching job and was being an assistant to Larry Brown when he took the job at Memphis. Larry Franks got fired from a head coaching job in the NBA and is currently an assistant in the NBA. Guess where they both were the head coach of an NBA team. That's right, the New Jersey Nets. Cue the Twilight Zone theme song.

Hes recruited here. He feels very strongly he can win here. Both parties interested.

Thanks globadoc! his credentials do seem very good on the service. I guess im just wanting a more proven collegate head coach you know? Would still be very happy with CLF though!

do you think Tom Thibodeau would be the Celtics first choice to replace Doc?

Worst case scenario Tom Thibodeau turn a them down.
Hope Bulls don't make finals.

Tom Thibodeau is an excellent coach and he would probably be the Celtics' first choice if Doc retired, but I doubt he would leave Chicago. Thibodeau was a assistant forever in the NBA and the Bulls were the first to offer him a head coaching position, so he probably feels some loyalty to the Bulls. Also the Bulls are a young team and will be good for a very long time(Bulls have the best record in the Eastern conference at the moment) while Boston is aging quick. Of course I'm a Bulls fan so I'm a little biased.

as long as we knew he was the coach, i doubt it'd make much of an impact. it would keep both our incoming guys and probably tobias and possibly scotty on the team.

We have an interim coach to recruit. All he has to do is pass the word. Im getting very pumped about this. I hope it goes.

I'm sold. Frank will be the coach.

That's not biased, it's exactly right.

Just a question but why does lawrence frank seem attractive to many of you? Does he have any college coaching experience other than being an assistant under O'neill. Is it because he's in the nba we think he will do good here? just wondering

Frank earned his B.S. in education from Indiana University in 1992, where he spent four seasons as a manager for the Hoosier basketball team led by Bob Knight. He also holds an M.S. in education administration from Marquette. Lawrence and his wife, Susan, have two daughters, and reside in Demarest, New Jersey.
Frank served as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee for three seasons under Head Coach Kevin O'Neill. Frank first worked with O'Neill as a staff assistant at Marquette University in 1992 and during his tenure, helped lead the Marquette Warriors to two NCAA tournament berths and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1994.

The rabid desire of Vol fans to be a toll booth on the New Jersey Turnpike of coaching never ceases to amaze me.

When it involves recruiting solid athletes that leads to winning, I dont mind.

Even if he came here for 3-4 years then left for the NBA again, he would bring some stability and credibility back to our program...maybe even make it more attractive for a big college coach. He can also help us weather the NCAA storm that is coming

That, and apparently he was a manager under Bobby Knight at IU for a few years. Runs a clean program, that Bobby. Could be just the ticket.

I just posted what I found. Didn't say the guy is saint..heck I don't know that much about him. I do think he could be a very solid bandaid for a few years to get us through this mess and stabilize the program

When you take a job you're all in or it isn't where you want to be. If he is offered and he says yes but wait until july then he is not our guy. Its simple as that. There is a tone of work for a coach in the off season not to mention a new head coach with players he has never seen play.

Brandon Wharton is a friend of mine from high school. He played under O'Neill and Frank for a couple of years. I will try to contact him and see what he thinks of him

I'll never forget Wharton's 3 at Rupp in 1999. I wish Wharton would have played in the Rocky Top League one of these summers.

If Frank took the job and left a few years later it would leave UT in a good position so what is the problem with that?

I don't follow the NBA nearly enough to make assessments like that. I suppose it makes sense that they would be interested in the Bulls coach.

I had read that Frank would be a candidate for the Celtics HC job, and I then read a line in the Rivers story about him considering stepping down last season and only having a one-year contract. Then, I considered the outside possibility of Frank leaving and then going back.

That wasn't the discussion. It was him saying yes but not coming here until the playoffs were over.
But since you ask why would you want a guy who is short timer and why would you settle for a short timer? Volfans said we can get great coach and here is a list of positives then why settle for someone who would use us as a stepping stone? VFL baby..
