Let's compare Jesus and Muhammed (and debate homosexuality) (and Tombstone).

1a. Perceived privileged access to truth.
1b. Exclusion
3. Hypocrisy

I may have finally stumbled onto a question of some value.

Couldn't all three of those you listed - all valid, IMO- be rightfully attributed to the believers, themselves?

I ask only because I'm trying to identify the primary protagonisms, if possible.

1. Law infused with religion as its basis
2. Education infused with religion as its basis
3. Socially accepted "norms" with religion as its basis

My three, in order.

You see the influence as both undue and somewhat insidious?

All three of those are fully intertwined and reinforced throughout the community of believers, the doctrines of damnation and salvation, and the institutions.

More harmful to progress than anything.

Insidious wouldn't be a good descriptor. What would be a good word for "holding back scientific progress, equality and advancement?"

That word would be how I see it.

Much of the atheist ire seems directed at three primary targets:

1. Christians (believers, of any religion)
2. The Doctrine of Damnation
3. The Church as an Institution

Is this right, or is there another Top 3 that has broader consensus?

Hypocrisy, puppetry, and self-righteousness.

I'm not sure of a specific word, either.

I think that religion is dying, and wonder if it wields nearly that much influence.

When you say "progress" do you mean the advancement of mankind, as a whole?

Were formal religion removed as an obstacle, what would be the single greatest advancement you believe we'd make, say in the next 20 years or so.

And I'll say this from the outset - these are not loaded questions, at least intentionally so. We spend a great deal of time talking about the beliefs / desires of believers around here, and I'd like to learn more as to the same with atheists, instead. I will neither resort to personal attacks nor threaten you with hell, for the duration.

Damn horse-diddling liberals.

Lulz.

Why can't the rest of the world laugh at the same jokes, even at their own expense, at least occasionally?

Still my favorite hippie, E - don't even know who's second. IPO remains my favorite ass-kicking atheist, fwiw.

Religion still holds a lot of sway. I'm sure old timers thought the same in the 60s. As our generation ages, and becomes more vocal an active, we will still continue to see religious belief inspired law.

Science and technology is near universal, so yes.

Embryonic stem cell related therapies, especially as pertaining to Parkinson's and very likely MS.

I'm personally burned out on all y'all suckas, but my doctor says this is a fantastic outlet to vent my worldly frustrations. Says it significantly lowers my chances of going postal and burning this town to the ground.

I always imagine IPO as some sort of body-building hipster. I really don't know why.

Which town - that will affect my choice.

I sense the hipster is strong in this one, too.

Enigmatic. Sardonic. Mellow, but irascible on certain things - ignorance, for example.

So why do you even post in this thread dufus?

Projection. This is called projection, GS. I would assert that its impossible for one to have read RDJ's posts and come away with the feeling that he's a "dufus", without either projecting your own inadequacies or in having a fundamental misunderstanding of the meaning of the word. Perhaps, both.

What's your aim, after all? To hear and be heard - or to continue to reinforce the spreading belief that you are little more than the ill-behaved lovechild of Roseanne and Westboro Church's Fred Phelps?

Is this approach getting you what you want? If not, consider changing it. If so, then please attempt to explain the intentioned target toward which you are progressing, as it absolutely escapes my ability to determine, alone.

making gsvol angry isn't that hard and he will always be the first to resort to personal attacks.

You are the one who harbors the personal grudge and the first to bring personality to the fore, between you and me.

You constantly call for a pissing contest between me and the Giblet yet I will say this much for him, whether he actually believes in the crap for which he seemingly advocates or as Rasputin suggests, is an imposter who exposes the idiocy of the left wing, he has the intelligence, unlike you, to at least be able to rebuild a carburator on a deuce and a half without having to refer to a manuel.
