1. There is definitely a correlation between funding and excellence.

2. UTM and UTC aren't holding UTK back.

It is what it is. Our current recruiters worked hard to overcome our perception of a tanking program and assure recruits of stability going forward. If one recruit was lost because he believed Jones over our recruiting staff, then best of luck to the young man in Aubarn.

No need to trash Jones for answering his phone and answering questions truthfully.

It’s better than the “hot sauce” method of lying to recruits to get them signed up then having them all kicked off, transferred, and quitting a year later.

The state budget says around 6,800 per student and 170 million total.

And you still cannot see how giving UTK an additional $85M (Martin and Chatty's shares, using the numbers you just referenced) would better increase UTK's institutional excellence?

Are you reading - and thinking through - your posts? Maybe that's the disconnect here, because I am certainly trying to do so on this end, with little success.

But, with any success, we'll see if such is correct in both theory and practice. And sooner, rather than later. Pay close attention to Governor Haslam in the next few years.

No hard feelings dude. I don't agree with your posts, but no big deal. It's a message board.

In the other thread, it was not my intention to make GJ some noble figure. I disagreed with the vitriol that was being posted and was only making the point that GJ came out and said he told the recruit the truth - and I didn't care if what he said was good or bad. To the point of him being worthy of respect, well, that's up to each person to decide that.

If a mod agrees I was painting the picture of GJ being a noble person worthy of our respect, I'll gladly pay the money.

So your solution is to take the whole 85 million and give it to UT? What will you do with the universities in Chatt and Martin--shut them down?

Where will the students go? UT doesn't have the room for them, and isn't interested in growing the student population that big. And anyway, it would be a net loss, since martin and chatty are getting less per student than UT.

It won't just jump up to the top 25, but it would be better for UT-Knoxville to be stronger and more respected nationally then trying to help Martin and Chattanooga keep up.

Yes, I agree: better to make UTK excel than to make UTC excel.

But your whole premise is that somehow the state has decided to do the latter. This is flatly not the case! I've never, ever heard anyone make this argument before, and it's ludicrous.

In what way has the state foolishly lavished support on these small schools? Show me that they have, and I'll join you in your crusade to give it back to the flagship.

You can build a lot of dorms and buy a lot of desks with $85M.

Perhaps the Martin and Chatty kids would travel to Knoxville to attend school, were it reasonably distinguished from the rest. Both they - and those already attending UTK - would be far better served, as well.

A single diverted cent is wasteful, and weakens the rightful institution.

Several sub-par schools are never equivalent to a single excellent one. And never will be.

Yesterday, Governor Haslam said that the singular focus of his administration's first year will be education. While his cited examples were specific to elementary and high schools (i.e. tenure, the administrative burden on teachers, etc.), its naively presumptive to believe that it will end there.

Seems to me if the football program is going to be included in this letter then it would more than likely be more like "lack of institutional control" because they would think there is a pattern there. GBO!!!!!
