Letter From 'AA..

And I don't blame them one bit. Why would they?

If you're one of the smaller UT schools, would you let UT run off and leave everyone else?

Because it would probably give the entrie state a better rep if we'd actually let one school standoff from the others and try to become a top 25 public university.

Once again, I think every 4 year public school in the state needs to learn what the word "flagship" really means and fall in line accordingly.

Laughable, at this point.

And UT-Martin isn't exactly the main culprit for what's holding UT back from top 25 status.

Very idealistic and noble. Will never happen. Honestly, I don't think money is the problem.

I've never understood why some people think other schools in the state should bow down to UT. I love UT as much as anyone, but attitudes like that sound like something Vanderbilt would say.

As stated earlier, most believe the letter will not be very damning to the University. That in itself could be a boost in the arm.

The cloud of indecision is never good. Pearl and company, if they have any brains at all, could turn the letter into a "balls to the wall" type scenario.

That kind of behavior can end a career...not that I care.

Considering Vandy is a private school, I really doubt they would say that.

You're right. But you get my point.

The better-than-you attitude is what I was referring to.

so all UT schools should strive to be on the same level and tax dollars should go toward this goal? You don't think a model like N Carolina is worthwhile?

I'm not saying the other schools are equal in standing. No debate here.

But to think another school, organization, ect. is going to stand by and let UT snag up all the cash isn't realistic. If I were in their shoes, I'd get all I could, too.

We just want our own governing body. Having to compete with all of the other universities AND community colleges is ridiculous. It does no one but the University of Tennessee any good to "follow the pecking order" and such. Its a business, and like all businesses, the ones that have better resources and development of them seem to achieve higher returns. Our resources are directly inhibited by the inability to regulate our own institution. The government has recently proposed granting us our own "Board of Regents" essentially.

The Board of Regents has no authority over relegating funds to UTK however they have the ability to allocate funds to all competing universities. Why then are more than half the members UTK alums and boosters? Its a rhetorical question.

Not really

US News ranks UT 51st currently among public schools.

You think if UT-Martin and Volunteer State Community College cough up a little of their piece of the pie, UT will suddenly jump 26 spots in the ranking to number 25?

Seriously, is this the argument?

1) In a way, it is a business. But it's also higher education. There's a difference.

2) If the smaller UT schools get their own governing body, they should drop "UT" from their names. What would be the purpose of keeping it?

Memphis doesn't have "UT" in it's name. They're the only one requesting their own governing body.

And bear in mind, at the moment the UT system isn't governing Memphis. Memphis is governed by the board of regents (TBR) with ETSU, MTSU, Tech, TSU, APSU, and the community colleges.

What they want is a THIRD governing body that's different than those colleges and also different from UT.

Yes, more investment in the flagship univ would help

The state couldn't divert any more money away from the ETSU's and Martins of the world without simply shutting them down. Since many of those schools are hundreds of miles from Knoxville, that would be a poor decision for the state--flagship or not, regional schools like ETSU churn out a ton of necessary graduates, like school teachers and nurses.

Thus, the only way to come anywhere near making UT a top-25 university would be to put more state money into higher ed, period. And that, my friends, ain't happening in this state. The support from the people and from the legislators isn't there.

Wasn't referring to Memphis, unless you're talking about the UT campus there. The whole city could fall into the river as far as I'm concerned.

I agree. Our state as a whole lacks a real commitment to higher education.

???

Memphis is the only one requesting the separate governing body.

Not sure what you meant by taking UT out of names, if not them.
