Lincoln Riley to LSU picking up steam

Riley is the one coach I wish Tennessee would have “over paid” and offered like 10-12 million for this last search. Especially since Tennessee dug in and said they weren’t paying out Pruitt’s buyout.

Worst thing to happen to USC was for LSU and FL jobs to come open and drive up salaries....also not sure if mentioned TCU hired Dykes

Plus PSU and MSU picked this moment in history to start handing out Jimbo Fisher size contracts for “continuing”. Baylor working on the same. Slim pickins out there.8D7EDEF4-2860-49B2-B305-3B2C71B29AB9.jpeg

Amazing that nobody seems to want Bill O'Brien...schools and fanbases...can't get more experience at the highest levels of NFL and NCAA than him

Problem is he isn’t a winner. He took an impossible task at Penn State but quickly left for the NFL. He hardly has to recruit at alabama so he’s basically playing with a loaded toy box. There is no difference between him and Sark. And Sark is a dumpster fire

Why? He’s not built anything. He was handed the keys to a Ferrari, in a league full of station wagons. The talent advantage on paper that OU & TX have over the rest of the Big XII is embarrassing and TX is his only competition for that talent on the recruiting trail. He has 9 losses in his career and 3 of them are to SEC teams (he’s only played 4 of them). I think he would be fine at LSU and make the playoffs every so often but he’s not going to dominate and run roughshod like he does at OU.

Handwriting was on the wall earlier this week when SMU lost several major commits. SMU just lost 3 recruits..the #7 receiver in nation and #6 safety in nation all decommitted . If Lincoln Riley's younger brother is offered a position at TCU then the SMU QB will follow.

Call me crazy. But I think a coach like Mark Stoops would actually be decent at LSU. You don’t need to be an elite recruiter there. They automatically get all the top talent in a talent ridden state. Get a coach who gets the most out of his players.
Same narrative we heard regarding Mullen at Florida. “School recruits itself!” along with “Saban couldn’t recruit at Mississippi State!” which correlates to Stoops recruiting at Kentucky. LSU has never done well with a lower level recruiter and that hasn’t been tested in over 20 years. Saban begat Miles begat Oregeron…all elite closers. Any slippage and those top guys they used to net every cycle join their other buddies in Tuscaloosa.

That and the previous stop at Penn State was quasi-miraculous. That was a 10 year rebuild he nailed in 2.

Riley has basically been a fixture in the Playoff / NY6 as the floor. However, his ceiling is being a qualifier for the playoff.

Also, his 1-3 record vs the SEC spans over 5 seasons of coaching at OU. There is nothing to say those 4 games against LSU, Bama, Georgia, and Florida would be a “preview” of his record vs 8-9 SEC teams per year.

He’s one of the best coaches in the country and would easily be the best hire in recent history. There is no way his floor in the SEC would be anything less than 9-10 wins outside of the occasional year….

And at the end of the day at Tennessee, a coach who has us rolling off 9-3/10-2 records or better year after year, the money would mean nothing.

in this era, money means nothing. No Tennessee fan would have any problem paying someone like Riley the highest salary in the country if he had us back to winning double digit games per year. The odds of that happening are better than it not.

Again could he rebuild a program, he’s never had to do it. All he’s done is not mess up what Stoops built and he basically has to recruit one state. He’s a fixture in the Playoffs/NY6 because he has to get past one team every year in a P5 conference. There’s 33 4* or 5* in Big 12 classes for 2022, 22 of them are going to OU or TX. For comparisons sake there are 106 4* or 5* in SEC classes for 2022. His recruiting classes over his career so far would average 5th in the SEC today and I don’t know if he could do that at TN when his entire career is focused around recruiting TX. I hope he stays at OU through the transition to the SEC cause I’m anxious to see how OU performs against a consistent SEC schedule. I think we see him “step back” to a 9-3/10-2 coach as you said, with an occasional playoff appearance. It’ll be admirable no doubt but it won’t be the run he’s been on at OU.

I think any Riley to LSU talk or anywhere for that matter is agent driven rumors...makes zero sense to leave for arguably lateral job

A one loss Big 12 team needs help to make the playoff. A one loss SEC team is likely 1 of 2 SEC teams in the playoff year after year.

Recruiting becomes much easier at LSU than OU. Also, you are likely to be a national title winner at LSU based on history.

If Butch can recruit 4 and 5 stars and be a moron on the sidelines, any great coach can walk into Tennessee and bring in these guys. Especially given how down other blue bloods in the SEC are. Riley would crush it at Tennessee. As we’ve seen with Heupel, only need 1-2 years to just get players in the program and then can start really competing. Huepel’ stability to have high octane offense is speeding up the rebuild. Riley also runs prolific offenses given his track record with Heisman competitor QB’s

Everyone seems to forget that Oklahoma will be in the sec in a few years. Why jump now?

Because OU and Texas will have a few down years most likely their first few years in the league. I don’t see OU keeping their standard just cause they are in the SEC

You contradict yourself right here. How would Riley crush it at UT in the SEC while failing to keep the standard at OU in the SEC? At OU he has to get 1/3 of the top talent of one state to not only compete but dominate, today. At UT he’d have to recruit the entire southeast and to an extent nationally, to hold serve. There’s ZERO resources we have that OU doesn’t have that would elevate his career here; especially not in 4 years when the SEC money rolls into Norman.
