Riley is an a**hole for sure but tell me this, does Oklahoma joining the SEC make it easier or harder for Tennessee to win a National Championship? Riley understands that joining the SEC makes his path to the playoffs much hard. No playoffs, no championships. Are all of the ex-Tennessee coaches that couldn't make it to the playoffs doing better or worse in their chosen careers now? Just a little something to think about.
I don't think OU and Texas joining the SEC really has any impact on the Tennessee (or any SEC school) winning conference or national titles. It becomes harder for Texas and OU to win them though.
Fans of SEC schools do tend to overestimate the degree to which the SEC will make life more difficult for Texas and OU, however it will certainly make their life harder. OU and Texas (when they are good) are used to having only one or two (two tops) conference teams who can throw a wrench in a conference title run.
Take A&M as an example since they are a relative newcomer. Alabama is the bell cow of the SEC so it's assumed you'll have a tough game with them. However, in any given year, what are the odds you are going to be able to easily handle Auburn, LSU, Miss St, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and 2 SEC East opponents
all in the same season?
Sure, in any given year you'll be able to handle some of those schools, but what are the odds that all of those schools, or all of those schools except one, are going to be teams you could beat with relatively little sweat? IMO, OU would lose or be at serious risk to losing to Alabama, Ole Miss, and A&M, and games to Miss St, Auburn, and LSU could be pretty competitive and lose-able. There was not a single cake walk game in there for OU this year, especially with the way they played.
SEC schools are used to dealing with that dynamic already, and adding OU and Texas puts more fish in the sea, but the dynamic is the same.
