We have turf because of poor weather in early part of the year. We use to have all kinds of delays or rainouts cause of field conditions. Haven’t had one since installing turf. Also allows us to us it in the field in the fall and winter more.
I get your point but we have had a rainout, the first TN tech game in 2022, we were losing and the monsune came in. I still remember water running down the steps as I was leaving

It’s just so ugly and bush league looking. I mean my high school team has natural grass and real dirt. My little league fields had it.

There is no reason an SEC baseball program should have fake grass painted brown instead of dirt on their field. None of the SEC power programs use it besides Vandy which famously has basically no AD funds. Hell, I can’t think of a power team in the entire country that uses it besides Texas, but they have the old school dirt cut outs around the bases.

Arkansas, USC, LSU, UF, Miss St, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, A&M.. all playing on a real baseball field. Vandy, Kentucky, Missouri… and us… are the only ones using chopped up tire bedding and green and brown plastic .

If tony likes it, more power to him. But its only benefit is drainage. Besides that, it screams were a not taken seriously poverty program.

If a public high school can manage this, so can UT as a top 10 baseball program in the country.

Here’s why turf is good: https://utsports.com/sports/baseball/schedule/2015

If the link doesn’t take you directly to it, make sure you check the home part of the schedule. First eight home games did not happen. I heard CTV thank a donor for paying for the turf, so I guess he’s happy.

correct, more practice time in the early part of the year pays huge dividends, more camps and summer tournaments to raise money for the support staff, all without worrying about turf conditions. It’s here to stay as long as CTV is at the helm. I think you will see more and more universities convert to turf too. It just makes too much sense when your 1st game is in mid February. Players also like, makes up for our sub-par facilities

I always though having a grass field was a reason that CDS was not successful here. Too many early season lost opportunities to play games always had our guys catching up. Pretty sure CTV wanted turf as part of the deal to sign on with the Vols.

The drainage is the very reason. Late winter/early spring in the upper south is wet and miserable. If it rains 1/2 a day and the sun never comes out it never dries out to get a game in. We were the ONLY SEC team to get all 56 games in this year. You can thank the field for that. How does field turf scream poverty? It screams we’re serious enough that we’re going to get all of our games in.

TV and radio sell special segments of the broadcast to sponsors, like the Aflac trivia question or Nationwide Good Hands Moment replay. Maybe we could keep the stadium "Lindsey Nelson" by selling off $8m worth of parts of the field and stadium.

Do any pro or college teams have sponsors for parts of their stadiums?

Weigel's and Pilot might sponsor some concession stands... EyeCare Optical could sponsor the batter's eye... the cheaper seats section sponsored by Preparation H... the pitchers mound by a cosmetic surgeon... the home dugout by a local excavating company... and the visitor's dugout by pest control.

Those are great ideas... my brother is on the University Eye Specialists BOD and I am going to run that one up the flagpole.

Please don't take this the wrong way. If I am wrong, please just inform me not bash me. I've never understood why the stadium was named after Lindsay Nelson. From everything I have been able to read, he never had anything to do with baseball so why is the baseball stadium named after him? He was a football announcer so I don't get why the baseball stadium is named after a football person. Again, just trying to learnt something today. Looks like the baseball stadium would be named after a baseball person and he would be given tribute at the football field or complex in some way.

Aesthetically, I agree, the turf field looks pretty bush. Practically, however it makes sense and it's what Tony specifically wanted. It means we are giving him whatever he wants to keep him here, as we should so **** it, I can suck it up for ongoing success.

turdo just recently discovered there is a BaseVols forum to come crap on

I've been here many times, ace. Thanks for playing. I was referring to national championships--which should be obvious since we've been to the national title tourney twice recently.

If the economy collapses and we’re all thrown into another Great Depression, it’s nice to know I’ll never have to worry about being homeless because I can always occupy the space in your head rent-free.

Lindsey Nelson was the broadcaster for the Mets for a long time. Since it’s the Mets, it’s not really baseball 😉

Good question. Short answer is that Lindsey Nelson founded Vol Network and was a nationally renowned sportscaster who graduated from UT. He has been honored in 13 separate Halls of Fame, spent 17 years announcing Mets, 3 years announcing Giants, and covered college football for 33 years (26 Cotton Bowls) including 14 years announcing ND football.

in 20 years, I hope it’s renamed Tony Vitello Stadium
