Lindsey Nelson Stadium,

Appears they need to get busy on a press box.
Don’t worry, there’s a back up plan. John Wilkerson is going broadcast while seated with me and my friends above the third base dugout to start the season. Then he’ll rotate over to hang out with @taylorvol and his daughter and friends for midweek games, and he will eventually start broadcasting big SEC series while helping @preacherman20 , Greg, and Stephen hold up that wall. I’m a little concerned about fans tripping over all of those wires, however.

All that's important is that Wilky is there.

That’s funny stuff! I do hope they name the press box after him. Wilkerson is a VFL treasure and a heck of a nice guy!

Other things to consider as we apparently insist playing in an unfinished stadium

(1) How much will pausing construction or crews working around games cost the athletic department?
(2) How much will temporary work (guardrails, fences, walkways) that will be just torn down after the season add to the bill?
(3) How many more tickets could UT sell at Covenant Health Park or Smokies Park for 2025
(4) If there were no games at LNS February-May; could contractor actually get the park completed for post season tournament?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the desire to play at "your field" but LNS is clearly going to look terrible in February and March. Fans will be walking through a construction zone for a second season in a row. Who knows if there will be a press box. Construction crews will have to start and stop and start with games underway. Their equipment and supplies will need to be fenced off.

Let's just play this spring somewhere else. The fans will be comfortable. This should have been the plan all along. No construction should have started until June 2024 and they could have ALL the renovations, additions, street work, landscaping and plaza easily completed by February 2026 with minimal disruption, increased costs, ugliness, etc,

I’m not superstitious but that wooden bat game at Smokies Park left a bad taste.

I believe UT may have an "in" with the Smokies owner
Between soccer and the Smokies games, I bet it would be near impossible to accommodate the BaseVols (even if they wanted to pursue that option). Plus, there will be several rain outs due to the grass field, so they will need to allow for open days. LNS looks to be way behind schedule and the upcoming weather will likely be less than ideal.

Soccer season is late in year.
Southern League does not begin until April and several years ago they switched to a mostly 6-game series model meaning there are a lot of open dates. In fact. the Smokies are on the road until the third series and the Vols are on road in Oxford that weekend.

May 2-4th series against Auburn is the first weekend there's overlap as the Smokies play Rocket City that weekend.. In fact, that's the only weekend of the regular season where there's overlap.

Now for the post season. The regional weekend (5/30-6/2) the Smokies are hosting the Barons and the Super Regional weekend (6/6-6/9) the Smokies are hosting the Lookouts. The Smokies games are almost always at night (7pm) except Sunday home games. I suspect with 3-4 extra months of work.; LNS would perhaps be better ready for post season play.

I agree, the weather is the main concern on natural grass. BUT, the Vols played baseball for 100 years on dirt and grass. There are for more midweek games early in season before the Smokies even start the season. The first Smokies midweek game is 4/15. in 2024, the Vols played 5 midweek games after that date. (Bellarmine, WCU, Lipscomb, Queens, and Belmont) Only 3 of those games would have interfered with similar date in 2025. Again, the Smokies play at 7 pm and UT could start any overlapping games at 2 or 3

Except for the post season, scheduling would be very easy to work around.

I still suspect that there's talk about this behind the scenes, it's just makes too much sense, the Old City is not far from campus. The grass has been installed. The seats have been installed. The bars are closer. WIN/WIN

Are you assuming both BB teams could not play on same day? New venue would probably love dealing with that problem as they get off the ground. Not sure who sets times for UT and Smokies for home games. Org. or parent organizations. Day night double headers could work for both.

I agree, during the regular season, I think there would only be 2-3 games where a DH would be necessary. College starts far earlier and ends far sooner than minors

I don't see them going anywhere. The field will be ready and the stands will be ready. They have a plan for the press box and no big deal that there is construction around the stadium. Not going to keep anyone from attending. Why would you lose your homefield advantage to go anywhere else and not have your facilities and your locker rooms.

Agreed. They are playing at LNS

Weekday day games aren’t ideal for college students and don’t draw crowds for Smokies. It would work okay for weekends but awful for weekdays.

Hope it can happen, but it would be good to have a set contingency plan if something goes way south with LNS. The 3 miles would not be a killer drive. Might be fun to host a few non conference games there each year.

Plus the university having to absorb money paid to the Smokies as a rental deal.

I hope it’s okay to pose a question or three. The field itself looks fine. The previous stands exist. How many people are really gonna go to the pre SEC games in Feb., especially the midweeks? I have a feeling they know what they’re doing on construction of this, especially as it relates to baseball. There may be some give and take as it relates to parking and seating, maybe the atmosphere to a degree, but the games will go on, right? If I get lucky enough to get a ticket I most definitely ain’t gonna be looking at the infrastructure or construction…This is what we wanted right? Takes time. Takes Money.

GBO!!!

Of course they do, but conflict of interests can be a concern. Should be rather obvious.
Only if Boyd Sports makes money doing it.
UT could use their ushers. Their ticket people. Aramark concessions. etc

If no profit, then now conflict.
There was no trouble with Boyd Sports doing the Orange/White World Series in Kodak.

Alabama played a full season in Hoover a handful of seasons back. under similar circumstances.

The biggest thing would be if the Smokies want their grass tore up in Feb and March before they open their season. Also a lot to be said about having your locker room, cages, lounge, etc for the players.
