Looking back, should not have fired Phil

One year removed from Atlanta. Should have tried harder to get Cutcliffe instead of Fooley. Phil was hamstrung in who he could hire by Hamilton. We have made enough blunders to last a lifetime.:hi:

Can't go back and change things. Just be happy we got Butch. He will get us back on top of the SEC. And if we are on top of the SEC, then we will be one of the top teams in the nation.

Yeah, Bear Bryant, Charlie Mac, Shug Jordan, and Johnny Vaught were pushovers.

Don't forget Vince Dooley. All five of these men were Hall of Fame coaches. Collectively, they won 28 SEC championships and 8 national titles. These were the men with whom Dickey regularly matched wits and MORE than held his own. Seven out of the ten coaches in the SEC during the mid- to late-1960s, including Ray Graves of Florida, made it to the College Football Hall of Fame. People who talk about how competitive the SEC is now either forget or are unaware of just how tough the conference was back then.

They are too young.

I AGREE 100%. Phil should have retired earlier after it became apparent his beloved team was slowly sinking under his guidance.

Oh, it's this topic again.

Check Fulmer's later recruiting and record against Richt, Meyer, Saban and Miles.

He had a great run but got entitled, lazy and complacent. His time had come.

What is sad is not that he was let go, but that he let himself get to the point where it was necessary.

Fulmer is a true VFL; however, at his last Bama game in K'ville when I looked around the stadium and over 1/3 of our stadium was filled with Crimson I wanted to throw up.
He needed to go and the rest is history.

Like it's been any better since then?

Yeah, and all of them except Bryant would have been fired by today's standards. Vince Dooley was a barely above average coach who caught bottled lightning for three great years with Walker. His win % was similar to Johnny's but he lasted much longer. Vince coached from the early 60s to the early 90s and had many long stretches of mediocrity. He would not last 4 seasons in this era. Fulmer has a better win % than ANY of those coaches you mention. Hell, even Bryant was actually under fire in 1970, right before he finally integrated. Different era...I wonder if even he would have survived that stretch nowadays?

We fired the man that could not coach all he did was give TENNESSEE the best 15 year run in the last 60 years and a NC other than that he did nothing for us, we should have gave him 1 more year and then let Phil walk on his terms if we had another bad season the year we fired him he had a top 10 recruiting class going and by the way he is in the HALL OF FAME that's pretty good for a man that could not coach 9 wins was a bad year when he was here, now look at us just wishing for 6 wins and a small bowl, but coach Jones will get us back if we give him time we are still 2 years from even thinking about 9 wins.

^ Not me, I'm thinking about it now. :hi:

i always and still like fulmer, but he got lazy. he hired clawson and that pretty much ended his time here. cut kept him going. without him he was just an average coach.

I said 10 years ago that for 20 years after Fulmer was gone UT fans would be complaining about how he had run the program down. Just finished year 5 so only 15 more to read threads like this

So you knew this would all be happening 4 years before Fulmer was fired? Would you please think about this weeks powerball numbers and email the winning ones to me?

Fulmer was great in the 90s when the rest of the SEC coaching talent was atrocious outside of Spurrier. When the Sabans And Rchts started showing up, Fulmer was exposed as a very good recruiter who just couldn't coach really well.

Great point, I'll just top it off with one name - Cutcliffe

Fulmer was burned out. He did too much of the recruiting, Chavis was dead wood and even Cut was not known as a great recruiter. Fulmer had trouble turning over his staff and let some coaches hang around too long. When things were going well Fulmer was great but faltered when changes needed to be made. Hiring Clawson was a prime example of Fulmer extending beyond his comfort zone. Clawson never figured out how to get anything out of Crompton and that killed the 2008 season.

Looking back on it, the entire fiasco rests with the worst AD in the history of UT, Mike Hamilton! I am so glad he is gone! Hammy set our sports programs back ten years!!!!

Should have done what FSU did with Jimbo Fisher if they wanted to fire Fulmer, but it's still history!
