Looks like Jimbo Fisher is out.

Urban might win within 2-3 years but then the lockerroom implodes, he has a mental breakdown and leaves them with a royal mess bigger than they have now.
Agree to disagree. The man can coach/recruit at the collegiate level better than everyone not named Saban and maybe Smart.

Wonder if Jimbo is required to look for work.
That contract was so far in his favor, I wonder.

I thought A&M would keep him unless they had someone already lined up, but this timing makes me think they are going shopping.
This coach shopping spree will be one for the ages.

I have a feeling Kiffin will be mentioned.
I have a feeling Kiffin will “get himself mentioned” in order to hold ole miss hostage over a pay raise again…

Candidate list per Pete Thamel

Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin
Duke’s Mike Elko
Florida State’s Mike Norvell
Oregon’s Dan Lanning
UTSA’s Jeff Traylor
Kansas State’s Chris Klieman
USC QB coach Kliff Kingsbury
Washington’s Kalen DeBoer.
There is no incentive for anyone on that list except Traylor to leave their current school for A&M. And even that may be suspect.

There are four reasons for all of them to want to leave:
1. $$$
2. SEC
3. Playing in front of 100,000 fans
4. Unlimited resources

Mike Elko and Norvel have incentive to leave because they don’t know what conference they’re going to be in from 1 year to the next.

I don't think any of those guys care about #2. Being outside the SEC actually offers an easier path to the playoff. #3 is probably cool to them, but isn't what they are going to base a career decision on. They all care about #1 and #4.

FSU will find a landing spot. Duke? I dunno, but basketball carries a lot of weight and will help them land somewhere.

The guys worried about conference fit are Traylor and Klieman.

Regardless, the ceiling is much higher at FSU for Norvell than at A&M. And he is headed the right direction. With Teaxas & OU coming into the SEC, A&M's opportunity is fading quickly, and they never capitalized on being separated from the two. It would be an annual battle between A&M, ARK, , Vandy and MSU to stay off the bottom.

A case could be made for Elko, though if I were him, I could come up with some good reasons to pass on College Station as well.

I think Traylor is in a good spot bc he’ll eventually land in a P3 or 4 job. I was thinking K State and the Big 12 were on pretty solid footing right now .I guess we’ll see how much will be swallowed in the next round of realignment.

A&M with their evidently unlimited resources should go for the hottest coach in the country, Kirby Smart. Keep stacking bags of cash on his desk till he said ok. Their next choice should be Ryan Day.

Yeah K State is definitely staying in this reconstituted Big 12. I think the general fear at this point is simply how good of a conference will that be in the future without Texas and OU. Who is the biggest fish in the new Big 12...TCU? Oklahoma St? They have some solid programs but no straws that stir the drink.

They have a lot of B teams. They’re a very good basketball league though. I’ve said for a long time that I think the Big 12 could be a good landing spot for Duke if it doesn’t land in the B1G.

I think there is for Kiffin. He's already moaning about NIL and how hard it is to recruit to Ole Miss. Both problems much improved at A&M

Didn't say he can't coach (he can!). Didn't say he can't recruit (he does!). I did say he has mental breakdowns, leaves a job, and locker room messes behind while he's at it. Florida has not recovered from his reign. OSU has, but I think he had some issues there as well when he went out the door.

Risk I’m willing to take if I’m A&M. Florida hasn’t recovered because they Tennessee’d their hires after him. Muschamp, McElwain, Mullen, and Napier (jury is still out but it doesn’t look good) aren’t the guys to lead you to the promised land. Meyer is a known commodity. Sure, it may lead to disaster in 5-6 years but if you get a chance at greatness in the interim, you take it I say. Their program is in the crapper already… Meyer could have them in the upper echelon in 2 years. He’s elite.

I'll concede that is a valid consideration. He can you get there in the mix for national titles (maybe, been awhile since he's been in college), but got to accept he has a shelf life and when his expiration date hits, we're talking really bad bananas in the basket.

Yeah that could happen. Gotta swing for the fences if you’re A&M though. Btw, I don’t think Meyer would go there. I think he’s waiting for Texas which I think could open up in the next 2 years. I don’t see Sark getting it done ultimately, and they will get restless in the SEC.

I agree but I think there is a simple reason. Didn't everyone just see the buyout Jimbo got??!! All these guys will want to jump. They all have the ego to believe they can do it. Alings with your points above and they get a golden parachute if they don't! You would be the dumbest coach alive not to take it or parlay it into an equivalent deal at your own blue chip program.

Except next guy up prob won't get the Jimbo buyout.

His history says he's likely to make the jump if offered. But, that has also bit him some too. It's a 5 year job at best. I'm not sure Ole Miss prob would ever fire him unless he goes all Hugh Freeze. Also depends how long Saban has left. He could take some trips to ATL when Saban leaves. I don't ever see him having trouble going 50/50 with LSU over the long haul.

Having said that, with the recent A&M rosters, he may have already made atleast 2 trips to ATL. He's way better than Fisher.

I think the only way to curb the insane coaching contracts is to work in some type of incentive clause, even into the buyouts. I don't think the established coaches would take it at first, but if you start with the up and comers, and get it to be standard practice you could start to see things even out.

Something like your buyout for being fired is your winning percentage of your remaining contract, or whatever is agreed upon. you win 30% of your games, you get 30% of your buy out. Or a fixed dollar amount, you win X games, you get X dollars, or something.

I really think the dominance of Saban and now Smart have ruined the sport. Schools feel like they should be able to find their own Saban/Smart. The bar has risen so high that what was acceptable or good, is not good enough.
