How to Help Negative People

"Negative people are a danger not only to themselves but also to those around them. Consequently, it’s important to preserve your own state of mind while trying to help them. You won’t help a drowning victim by jumping in the water, flailing your arms, and screaming right beside him. Yet some people use this highly ineffective strategy when trying to help negative friends out of depression. Joining a negative person in a whining session only reinforces his negativity and makes you feel worse about your own life, even though it can temporarily make someone feel better to know he doesn’t have to drown alone. Negative people have an endless supply of pity party invitations. If you receive one, don’t RSVP."

Peace be with thee

That has zero to do with what I posted.
You act as if the game is so different. That's horsedrop. Places that cut corners on character for talent win and win big. Those that don't become Indiana or Vanderbilt. Always been that way, will always be that way.

I'm not. Pearl is a snitch. That is a matter of public record and fact. Period. Dooley couldn't win in the WAC. Another matter of public record and fact.

Yet, Pearl had a great record previously but you didn't want him. He has propelled UT basketball farther than anyone else has, and yet you still bash him.

As for the snitch part, if cheating is part of the game, then not getting caught is part of it too. Again, it can't be both ways.

Those guys were all on the same team, and I left out Dale Carter, Anthony Morgan, Reggie Cobb, and Alvin Harper. Tennessee football never becomes nationally relevant in the cable TV era without those guys. Dooley would apparently rather have a bunch of Reviezes and Sullins "trying hard" and "caring about the jersey." I don't give a damn if they wipe their feet with the jersey, give me great players.

All Dooley is doing is giving the people what they want. Kiffin left a bad taste in many peoples' mouths. If you read the article he clearly says there are guys you take chances on because of their talent.

In fact, he says nothing at all in the article to even suggest that he'd rather have a guy with character vs. a guy with talent.

And assuming that just because someone has morals or wants to see things done the "right way" and wants make good choices that makes him some kind of bible-thumping christian is probably not the wisest assumption.

The 85 limit changed the face of college football when it went into effect, that and regional TV coverage. Once we started getting equal coverage of teams, now the teams that have the most in state talent are typically the most relevant now.

Eric, I don't know where you get the idea that football today is so much different than it was 20 years ago. It takes the exact same things to win.

That's a theme in a lot of your posts -- that somehow what is happening now is some new invention. Recruiting is much the same. Players are the same. Coaches are the same. This game hasn't changed much at all -- to it's ultimate credit.

All Dooley is doing is giving the people what they want.
A brilliant idea with a fanbase that thought retaining Phillip Fulmer after the 2005 season was the right thing to do. Hell, I like the idea. Give the orange overall crowd what they want. Recruit every 5'11" 207 pound defensive tackle from Gomer Pyle High in Assclown, TN. Let's make the fans happy. You know, the people who wanted Joey Matthews to be the starting quarterback.

And that has not always been the case???

Florida State got all of the Florida kids for years. When Miami actually started putting some thought into their football program in the 80's -- they started getting it. USC has been getting the lion's share of the talent for years. UCLA has always been a strong program. So has Texas.

I don't see your point at all. Not sure how any of that relates to the other. We're talking about putting on a face in the media to sell football tickets. That's it.

Look at how much the top of the college football landscape has changed in the last 30 years. Oh, wait. Is that USC, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, and Oklahoma I see? Nevermind.

There is a ton different now than there was 20 years ago, IMO.

Uh, it really doesn't.Look, let's keep this about football.

Some of you act like recruiting character guys is a bad thing. Sacrificing integrity for quick fixes is what the last staff did. It's not sustainable.

He went there Sab, i just responded...and for me it does......Im sure he is devastated to hear that though.

I don't think that's good enough. We shouldn't patronize the orange hairs and facepainters. Let's really show them proper respect. If a player won't willingly have the Game Maxims branded onto his forehead, we don't want him. If he can't recite Steve Alatorre's career stats, he's out. WE KNEEEEEEDS PEEPUL WHEW BLLLEEEEED BIGGGGG ORUNJE!!!!!!!!!!!!GOOOOOOO VAWLLLLLLLLLLLLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, cuz hat is the kind of guy who cares what others think. :p

I know what you're saying. I'm happy for you. All I'll say.

How about when we start compromising talent for character we revisit this and I'll admit I was wrong?

Already done it once. You think Bob Stoops or Jim Tressel lets their only decent offensive lineman hit the road without much resistance to make a point?

I probably didn't word that very well in my first response. I'm talking more about the cherry picking of talent for those state schools who are in the hotbeds of talent, versus just taking the whole pantry of players in the state because they had room years ago. Your right, it is the same as far as those programs being relevant. I'm sick as hell, so forgive me for being in a fog.

You're wrong. I've talked to Aaron Douglas. His mind was made up. There was no changing it. I'm sure they tried.

The end result is the same. You can only have 11 players on the field at a time.

Sorry to hear you're ill.

I though persuasion was supposed to be one of Squire Dooley's real talents? That UVA Law background and all. If he can't manipulate a confused 20 year old, he probably should start looking for a new job. Barry Switzer convinced Troy Aikman to stay at Oklahoma and run the frigging wishbone for a season. That's what the great ones do.
