‘23 LSU transfer OT Zalance Heard (Tennessee)

He was in a rush to get to his flight and did not have time to stop and talk. Have heard that the six hour whirlwind visit went well, and now he is off to Oklahoma for a visit there. As of now they don’t have any more visits set up after the trip to Norman.

6 hours.... Lol

No it's not. That you don't like it doesn't mean it's idiotic.
It’s idiotic to not try and pay for the best players at positions of need. That’s the way it works. In the real world, producers get paid. If you want to win you pay. Acting like we are above a bidding war is ridiculous and not true.

It’s idiotic and thankfully not true. We offer big money.

They are trying.

AP literally said Heard didn’t interview. So he didn’t say anything. AP said he “heard” it went well. Presumably from those around the program.
So they did everything they could, and feel it went well. He is off to OK to see if it goes better or not. There still may be others that are willing to make an outrageous offer. So we wait to see if playing with Nico at a place like Neyland with our fans and a coach like Heupel with a competitive offer is enough.

I understand and appreciate the strategy. And support it too.

It seems to be the reasonable and rational (shoutout Luther) approach that will pay benefits in the long run, and maintain the balance and consistency Heup obviously values.

I sincerely hope it’s successful. And if it’s not, I sincerely believe they will adjust.
Huepels strategy is fine by me if we bounce back this year and see results. The bar was raised last year and it’s the Wild West now. Any good coach and recruiter can reload instantly

It’s been stated they give what they consider is an excellent offer so they are giving the best players competitive offers. They likely made him an offer he deserves. Others may also. But they have not gotten into bidding wars. Doesn’t mean they won’t if they feel he is worth it with how desperate they are. But not going to be used to make someone else give more.

I agree, this not bidding for players talk is dumb. Everyone is now. We are definitely paying big money. If we lose it’s not about the money usually
I mean of course there's a number... But we've shown we're not going to keep renegotiating.... We trust our valuations and our total package to compete for these kids.

If the kid is about the money first, well, we've let those kids go see what the market will bear.

I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as “worrying about hurt feelings”. Not in this era.

We’re talking about the Portal here, managing the Portal. A big part of that is keeping the players you want and need out of it.

That’s true. But you have to make the right calls between “keeping current dude happy or adding a better player”. I will trust staff to do so, but we can’t always run when a player wants a big bag, some are worth it. Some aren’t worth losing guys on your team already though.

Agreed.

And the valuation models are only as good as the underlying assumptions.

Our assumptions may be wrong. If they are, we better update them, or the model is useless.

Yep. We need our own nil version of a salary cap manager to make sure we're on par with the market.
