LV 2019 Recruiting Thread

🤔 coaching aside (which is hard to even think about). We had the # 1 class and then followed it up with another top 5 class. Then we are in on some of the top players in the 2019 class. So this statement seems off basis especially when you look at 4 all Americans followed up by 3 all Americans. So I’m not thinking recruiting has fallen off that badly.

Things have changed. Holly's seat is as hot as it has ever been and she has one year left on her contract. This is a pretty unimpressive start to the 19 class IMO. Normally I wouldn't pay a whole lot of attention to recruiting rankings... if the coach has a proven track record of finding diamonds in the rough and/or developing talent. Does that describe Holly? She can't even develop top 10 talent, what is she going to do with a player who barely makes the top 100?

Looking back at some of our national championships ... it wasn’t because of our center. We had good guard play and we had at least one player that could play every position and was versatile. We had great players surrounding them to contribute consistently. Our center recruiting won’t make or break our chances of winning. We are blessed to have a Emily join us and she will be a great inside contributor.

The only team that comes to my mind of winning because of a center was Griner and we all know that story.

Notre Dames offense focused around Ruth Riley and she put the smack down on UCONN that year.

like sands in the hour glass, there goes the wins of our lives, :(

don't extend Holly!

How long are yall going to continue with the false narrative that players are not developed and coached?
As a point of fact, Darth's statement read "well coached", not coached.
If you would be kind enough to answer the following two questions, it would help in clarifying the situation.
1) How many players under Holly's reign have lived up to their high school rankings ?
2) How many years have the pre season expectations for the team been met or exceeded ?

#1 is certainly debatable, although you would first have to answer the question of which ranking service, as well as, whether the rankings that are presented are really good for anything other than fueling fan feelings and debate as to who has the best class.

#2 really can only be answered if you put it into a context of whose pre-season expectations you are referencing. My personal opinion is that the expectations for this past season's team, expressed by so many of the fans, were unrealistically high. Pinning one's hopes on the performance of untested freshmen, no matter how highly rated prior to arriving at college, frequently turns out to be a fool's game.

Always looking on the dark side. No wonder you chose that screen name!

Jim

Exactly! It's a shame that's almost all you can find on here is negativity. Every post, no matter the subject, becomes firing the coach or somebody is terrible - players, assistants, AD, other fans.

I agree, I actually feel like they exceeded expectations for a team that had to lean heavily on 3 freshmen. I thought they would lose at least 10 games this year.

Also find it funny how quiet the boards were when they were 16-0 before hitting a tough stretch. Then suddenly, FARH HOLLY.

Were you praising the MSU coaching when UConn beat them by 60 pts, just 2 years ago?

but my how times have changed, MSU through development beat UConn and ended their unbeaten streak, WHILE UT hasnt gotten far enough in any NCAA tourney to get to UConn and to play! And this year would have been no different, they would have beaten UT by 30 this year if not worse after what they did to USC who UT beat this year only when player of the year didn't play!

Prey tell which players have gotten better and been developed at UT? Russell, hahaha the poor girl might be the worst number 1 recruit in ratings in forever while all others went on to be named all-american in college. Nared lol nope, I cant name one player that I saw as a freshman proceed to just kick butt and get better the next 3 years!

And those questioning recruiting, since 2006 the top ranked player in the country per Hoopgurlz(to keep it the same people doing rankings) there is 1 that did not make AA most were even best player in the country, but Russell is the only one not to make a AA. During that time you had Tina Charles, Maya Moore, Delle Donne, Griner, Ogwumike, Mosqueda-lewis, Stewart, Aja Wilson, Katie Lou Samuelson that all were first team AA's. So either we keep picking the worst top rated recruits in the country or the coaches dont develop the talent they have, so which is it? And is both not at the foot of the coaches? Keep making excuses and you will see the Lady Vols become afterthoughts in women's basketball and it sucks after all the time and money spent with the program much less Pat's legacy that the program is wasting away into irrelevancy! I am sure Fulmer will not do anything about it until he is made to do something about it, but by that point it might not matter and hiring a coach will go like it did with the football program having a Lame Kitten, a Dunce Dooley and Red-face Jones! I would hate to see the program like that and they will also lose a generation of fans because of it like is happening to UT football right now, wished she would step down and the dang change purse open up and go hire a proven winner and someone that can right the ship!

Although she is a 2021 and anything can happen don’t forget we have a commit from one of the top players at 6’3” with Candace Parker type positionless skills already in Amani Bartlett (and she is still growing). You also have Treasure Hunt and 6’6” Kamilla C who are top 10 2020 targets and Kennedy Brown is a 6’6” recruit in 2019 that has TN in her top 7. Rickea Jackson and Jordon Horton both top players also are both in contact with TN. Last but not least the Tamari Key (6’5) and her sister (who is a 6’2” wing/guard) have TN on their list as well. So recruiting seems to be ok for now.

Am I to understand that there is a young lady in this world named "Treasure Hunt"? Seriously? :birgits_giggle:

...it looks like recruiting is going great. Good to know!

Recruiting seems to have worked pretty well for the top programs out there, and you also have those like MSU that seem to get the best out of the players and beating people by development instead of pure talent and no development! Uconn, ND, Louisville have one side of that while MSU has the other(one top 100 rated recruit on entire team).

#2 really can only be answered if you put it into a context of whose pre-season expectations you are referencing. Well, she should have been fired LAST season when she set the record of losses at TN which is bad considering Pat didnt lose that many and she BUILT the program from scratch! But yet we kept hearing you cant fire her because she has the number 1 recruiting class in the country coming in to help, and YET they played just as bad as last year and the second round defeat at home was just the latest in the line of firsts for the Lady Vols program that Holly is in charge of! So high expectations for everyone came from the line of top rated class coming in you cant fire her now, to we have ANOTHER highly rated class coming in we cant fire her now. Heck as long as Reaves is on this staff and there is a Lady Vols emblem(or UT altogether) to recruit on there will be top classes, the problem is not doing anything with them when they get here! They beat USC without Aja Wilson twice, when USC had her of course we know what happened, got beat by Bama, Mizzou, and won by a prayer 3 pointed against Auburn who was terrible at 14-15. Lost at HOME to ND who they led by 23 and got beat by 14, seriously a 37 point swing! They did beat a pretty good Texas team but not sure that would have happened at the end of the year when UT lost 7 of their last 16 games. And dont tell me the freshman hit the wall, they ALL played AAU ball which play tons of games not counting their high school seasons they also all played in, talking about a false narrative, if hitting a freshman wall happens Coack K at Duke wouldnt have won his last NC and Calipari would never have a good team as he pretty much lives and dies by freshman in men's basketball that has much more parity compared to the womens game.

Fair enough.
For #1, I suggest that you use "hoopgurlz" since it's readily available for the years in question. (Though I don't think it would make much of a difference which service is used)
For #2, I would use ESPN's preseason predictions. However, feel free to use your own predictions. Did you think we would end up with the record we did for either the 2015-16 or 2016-2017 season ? As far as 2017-2018 season goes, I thought our freshmen would prevent us from going to the final four in the NCAA's. What I was most troubled with was how the team regressed, rather than progressed, as the season wore on.
Finishing as the #7 seed in the SEC playoffs then losing in the second round of the NCAA's was underachieving, imo.
Here's hoopgurlz ratings on some of the players.
Graves #5
Carter #21
Jones #39
Russell #1
DeShields #3
Reynolds #42
Nared #6
Middleton #28
Dunbar #78
Cooper #12
Jackson #49

Maybe I’m late, but just saw where an Emily Saunders committed for 2019? Had not heard of her, anyone have any info? All I can find is that she is 6’4”. I was hoping we would get some of the higher ranked players for the post position.

Are people excusing the poor player development on inaccurate rankings? I mean, it's one thing if #78 Kortney Dunbar ends up not being that good, but Russell was ranked #1 by most recruiting services. There was little doubt that she was a very elite player. I'd say that the top 10 player rankings are spot on. There might be your Nina Davis or Alexis Peterson that ends up coming out of nowhere, but it's rare for a top 5 player to not pan out with hardware.
