Making the Tourney is NOT enough

He doesn't sound like a bandwagon fan to me.

I also don't think he deserved the amount of sarcasm and BS in response to his opening post and, regardless, if folks don't like it they seem to fail the ability to to "not" reply.

Anyway, to the OP- I feel like they need to get past the first round of the NCAA. If Martin can't get past the first round of the 2A's with the depth and talent he has then I doubt he'll ever get it done as a HC of a major program.

Oh I get it, it's the responder's fault.

It's a messageboard; you post something, it's fair game.

I have now finished my workday, came home, mowed the lawn, showered, and here I sit, and this thread is on page 4.

Wowzers.

What a comical thread. :) Nice save by zjc and the mod power. lol

Is it just me or are all the 'goals' I've seen for this Men's team just about making the tournament. Yes, I was frustrated with not making it the last couple of years, but with the tallent we have returning and the pieces we have added, if I am CCM, I am setting a goal for the year of Elite 8. Maybe I'm crazy, and maybe I'm missing something because I don't follow basketball day to day in the offseason. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Apparently there are a lot of ESL posters. Other words for GOAL include : aim, end, target, ambition, aspiration. Our goal should not be "one step at a time"

After underachieving in 2011 & 2012, a mere "one and done" won't be acceptable in 2013.

We lost to Austin Peay, College of Charleston, lost to Memphis in a close game in Hawaii. Those loses were definately games we could and should have won. Those loses cost us an invitation to the NCAA.

With the experience and the roster that we now have, we should go at least to the 2nd round in the tourney. Of course, the team that we draw in the 1st round does play a part in how far we go. I mean playing Duke in the 1st round would not be a good way to start the tourney.

Started out slow in 2011 but we didn't underachieve. I don't know why this keeps being said. We didn't have the depth against Memphis for the third overtime. Maymon single handily kept us in that Memphis game. I agree with everything else.

Goals

win one game at a time ?

do there best for the next game?

keep working it like that

and hopefully win the SEC tourney

hopefully all that 1 game at a time gets UT into the tourney

then worry about 1 game at a time

and it has a lot to do with what there seed will be

and who they draw

i think getting into the NCAA tourney will be a job well done by the players and coaches

then lets worry about it,1 game at a time and see where it all ends up at

and I can't wait to seem them hit the court and play

This but I took a day off of work today, yard's already be mowed, didn't shower, and have been looking at the replies to this thread most of the day. It wasn't worth my time to respond because im not a big talker but this thread has been rather interesting. I can't fathom the threads we'll see starting in a few weeks or so.

Just wait until our first loss. You'll see people in here that you thought never existed lol.

In all honesty with this talent just making the Tourney shouldn't be the goal. Most agree we should probably be a 4 seed, if we get bounced in the first round with that seed. It would be a failure, with this talent, IF everyone stays healthy. Should Martin get fired if that happens? No, he overachieved his first year big time. Year 2 it took awhile for them to figure out how to.win without Maymon. He has a pretty good class coming in as well. Now if everyone stays healthy and we miss the tourney we have a problem. IMO

Spot on

Stokes for sure doesn't start over Tyler or chism, anyone who thinks he does is crazy. I hate that I missed this whole thread, stupid school

Wrong.. Look at stats. stokes had a double/double streak for a while and almost avgd a double/double for the season. While I respect, smith and chism as they are vfl's, Stokes is a machine and you will see it a lot more this year with maymonne back. Stokes was solo in the post last year. He got double teamed all year

Chism > Stokes. Who would you trust with the ball in a close game? Plus, Chism could shoot from long range when needed and was a vocal team leader. Stokes is a good player, but limited to around 5 ft of the basket. This year is big for him. Hopefully, his game has expanded.

Based on what we know right now, Stokes couldn't play meaningful minutes at PF in Pearl's system, so it's really a decision between him and Chism at the 5 spot. Chism was far too versatile in that system to be replaced with a one-dimensional Stokes (though he is pretty dang good in that dimension). He would have been Chism's direct backup though, and played ahead of Brian Williams for sure, and could have played spot minutes at PF.

Also, Chism became a good FT shooter.

I'm sorry bro but your wrong. Your telling me if you had Tyler smith Chism and stokes, you would start stokes over those 2? Tyler smith and chism were way more versatile then stokes. Chism could hit the 3 and shoot FT and Tyler smith had the handles to bring the ball up. Stokes is a great post player, but what stokes brings, smith and chism could bring (both not as good as stokes in the post) with a extra dimension.

Let it play out. Tourney is a goal, playing well for a decent seed, no bubble stuff, person rankings tell us that. Once in the tourney, with seeding then elite 8 maybe the goal.

Baby steps with standards....

Final Four or bust for a team with the talent and depth of this TN team. Should also be in the mix to win the SEC

I agree with the OP. I think I could coach this team to an NCAA Tournament... The players alone can go out and make the tourny.
