Malzahn (not) to be named Vandy coach

Malzahn will leave Vandy within 4 years, guaranteed. They needed to go after someone who wants to stay there and build the thing up, not someone constantly on the move.

Might take him 5 or 6. Should've thought that one out a little more.

If we're being honest here, I think that's about when Dooley leaves UT.

If Dooley leaves UT on his own, that means things are going very well.

Regardless, we can do a little better than hiring a Vandy coach who has zero ties to the University. We might come and take Chip Kelly, if he's man enough for the SEC...

If Chip Kelly wouldn't leave for Florida, he sure as hell wouldn't leave for Tennessee.

And no, Dooley doesn't leave on his own.

Even to be HC at lowly Vandy, you gotta say that's pretty good for a guy who was running the spread offense in a Springdale, Arkansas high school not too long ago. Maybe he wants out of Auburn before sanctions hit. Maybe he just wants to be a HC, prove he can build a program, etc. IMO, it's a great opportunity for both sides. It's a PR coup for Vandy, hiring a "hot" coordinator for HC. That's much better than hiring some retread that you can argue with relative certainty will never succeed. For Malzahn, if he can make Vandy competetive/relative, he could do so much more somewhere else. Would open a lot more doors for him down the road.

Wonder who he'll hire for his staff, home run hire for Vandy. I wonder if he made any deals to get upgrades to the stadium and such for deciding to come.

It was a good move for both sides. Malzahn will miss possible sanctions being imposed at Auburn, he'll get a low-level SEC job that he can use as a stepping stone to go elsewhere, and he's getting paid.

Vandy's "fan base" will be excited by this hire and they'll play better football in years to come, therefore generating more revenue.

Good for both sides.

.

National Championship.
Like Cutcliffe did in '98? If he is accepting a HC position, I would be shocked if he didn't go immediately. I don't understand spending another month with one team while the team you are taking over is without a coach.

I do n't see anyone getting Vandy to 8 wins in the current SEC. He won't need 8 wins to get better offers though. If he can average 4 to 5 win seasons with a bowl game or two sprinkled in, he'll get better offers.

That's part of their problem. Who could they hire right now that would have any chance of succeeding and would want to stay at Vandy for the long haul? Maybe that will be Malzahn, maybe it won't, but if he can build the program up to respectability, then Vandy becomes a somewhat better job and maybe they can lure in a coach to replace him that would want to stay for a while.
