Will Ferrell's visit to Discovery Channel's "Man vs. Wild" drew 4 million viewers -- the biggest audience in the show's history. In the adult demo "Wild" scored a 2.2 rating. From a business-of-television standpoint, this was a particularly envious score. Discovery Channel signed Universal for a "Land of the Lost" sponsorship that included Ferrell's visit to the show -- and in return "Wild" got its biggest numbers ever.
That's like your boss offering you a huge raise if you promise to take more vacations.
One could argue the visit was off-brand for the show (it's not "Man Plus Comedian vs. Wild," after all), but Discovery held the "Land of the Lost" pimping for the ad breaks, which is less intrusive than many forms of product placement. Discovery is evaluating whether pairing Bear Grylls with other guests could work for future episodes. All around, good news for Discovery.
If anyone was a "Bear" fan I figured it'd be you.
Probably my favorite two classes of college were a couple PE courses....Backpacking and Backpacking/Camping. The final exam for both was a 3 day, 2 night camping trip to the Virgin Falls area. You know when the professor is sharing his favorite toddy recepie that you're in for a good time. I actually have some pics from a few of the trips ('82-'84)that I'll try and post. Once you took the class you could go on the "finals" trip every period if you liked.
Bear. Les is getting better, but he's about as exciting as watching paint dry. If the elements didn't get me, boredom would. Bear would keep things interesting.
Lol - true. Something makes me think Les still isn't as legit as everyone says... think about how long it would take him to set up each and every camera from those angles and junk.
and then backtrack to go get them. I don't think Les is by himself at all. It's sort of like Survivor. half a click away is an entire camp, complete with Starbucks coffee if something goes wrong for him.
What part of Utah was this in? I don't watch TV, so I've never seen the shows. Been a lot of places out here that TV crews would have a problem getting to, though.:hi:if i could post a map of the area i could show how he was in fact right next to a road and not out in the middle of nowhere in utah as well.

Yeah, I am familiar with Moab and a lot of the surrounding area. That would put him just south of Dead Horse Point Park. Not very far outside. 100 -200 feet or so. There's another road that runs down toward there. Maybe not quite to where you're talking about. So, basically, he was doing a survival thing in the middle of where a lot of people backpack about 5 miles from Moab. On top of the other things you mentioned. I could take him to the middle of nowhere out here if he wants to go.it has been a while so i am sorry it took a while to respond. based on the landmarks throughout that episode i am 99% sure he was just west of moab across the river from an area known as potash. if you get onto google maps and find moab and then look for kane springs road. this road changes names further down the road you go, but it starts out as kane springs road. follow that road all along the river and it will twist and turn again showing many names along the way until it turns into lockhart basin road right next to the river. it is at the very curve of that road that runs right next to the river. flip to sattelite view and zoom in to where it shows 200 feet in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. if you have found this location you will see some island like features just to the right hand side of the river. there is also a white house just north of the road. this is where the dogs are barking. that is where he stayed. if move just across the river from that point you will find two ranches. the bottom ranch is the one with the windmill that is a landmark you will never forget if you have ever seen it. so everything that he shot was right there within about 100 yards in either direction.
but since you don't watch tv, that was probably too much information. but it was basically in moab, very much within civilization.

Man vs. Wild is really entertaining. I love that show. That said, at least Les is a lot more realistic. He's not kicking it in motels when it gets tough outside or talking to a camera man when he gets bored. If I was ever stuck in a situation I'd rather hear what Les had to say. Bear just goes out in the jungle and does the extreme stuff that nobody would do. I guess that's just to get ratings. I have respect for both. I wouldn't make it 5 minutes in those environments.
