It should have been a win but I wouldn't put the loss on Graham. 17 rushes for 87 yards isn't bad. Fumbles happen and the one that was retuned was a ridiculous fluke. We crumbled under adversity and that's on coaching.Jay Graham wasn't fine in the '95 game. That really should have been a closer game .... he had two fumbles in the 3rd quarter that really stung. We threw in the towel after that.
You are right! However, besides their ‘95 team, it seems someone would always slip up and beat him each year. Seems one year Miss State did; and Auburn; maybe another unlikely team and then Florida State at years end a few times. I think Bama handed him two losses one year.Supporting cast wasn't good enough.. UF had it rolling at that time. Not many teams were beating UF in those days.
For the 3 years Manning “couldn’t beat them”,in 95 they lost the bowl game to Nebraska (de facto NC game), in 96 lost the last RS game to FSU (then annihilated them in the bowl to win the NC). In 97 they lost to LSU and Georgia. Those 3 teams lost 4 games total. Likely the “pinnacle” of the Spurrier era.You are right! Quarterback is worthless if the receivers can’t catch and the blockers can’t block. He played QB? Scored points? Kicked? Blocked?
So were the 1997 and 1999 teams. Luck plays an important part in most national championship seasons, for any team.Honestly, I think the 2001 team was more talented top to bottom than 1998. Imagine what could’ve been if Rohan Davey does not get hurt. Win the SEC. Get a shot at Miami, even though I think beating Miami would’ve been a tall order.
One game – who knows?
