being an openly gay mormon and a football player could ruin his career and ostracize himself from his friends, family and religion. It's fine to say that it's no big deal to us. But to football, ND, the religion, and his family, it would be a huge deal, and worth a cover up effort, imo.
Just thinking here. Thinking about all angles. The one that makes no sense is that he was the innocent victim of a hoax.
This seems more plausible. He can't be as stupid as the kid who lied that he had a D1 FB scholly and then held a press conference at his HS.
Well, the Domers are sticking their necks out for him far more unequivocally than I expected them to. Swarbrick has put his entire career on the line in a situation where he knows people are going to be digging up everything possible. Maybe Teo really is that much of a complete dumbass.

If you are gay and make up a fake gf, and it comes out, most people will forgive you and understand. Killing her? That's just unprecedented territory you don't want to get in to.

I could see that, and I would buy the fake gf angle...but kill her off? See that is the holdup.
ESPN and Sports Illustrated both ran with this story without doing their homework. Hell it was a cover story for Sport Illustated.
That doesn't make them liars, it just means they fell for the story just like every other news outlet did. They had pictures and everything, they did nothing wrong really except trust what turned out to be a bad source
I thought the press conference was telling, IMO.
