Martin interested in Illinois opening (Rumor)

If he has interest in Illinois, that means he's not a VFL and even though he'll likely stay, this is not good news for the future.

I would be shocked if Martin left for a lateral move, BUT you have to acknowledge that it's completely possible.

It could be argued that for regional purposes in recruiting, Illinois would not be a lateral move from Tennessee. It's in a better basketball conference. The entire staff is from Illinois. It is the state university and located close to Chicago (unlike Knoxville is to Memphis), where the current staff has recruiting connections (Webster imparticular).

Not saying its a slam dunk better job than Tennessee, just playing devils advocate. I guess it has the potential to be better faster.

Fair enough. Like I've said before, I know little about programs not named Tennessee.

And what if UT fired him?

If Martin is fired without cause, he will receive 60 percent ($780,000) of his base salary for however many years remain on the contract. If Martin left for another job during the first three years of his contract, he would owe UT two times his base salary ($2.6 million). If he leaves during the fourth year and beyond, he would owe $1.3 million.

If Martin is fired with cause, UT does not owe him anything.

No biggie. Like I said, it would depend on who you ask, and I don't think its a slam dunk better job right off the bat. But, for this particular staff and their connections and familiarity with that region, you could make an argument that they could be successful faster at Illinois than they could be at Tennessee.

As a Purdue fan who lives in Illinois and knows the program well there is absolutely no way in hell they hire another Gene Keady disciple following the firing of Weber. Absolutely no way. I wouldn't be worried at all.

Martin took this job knowing that Purdue had a possible opening coming up.

He's not leaving after one year to take a rival's job. Illinois ain't a dream job like Kiffin for USC.

Martin and Painter have the same agent, they knew what was up and played the game well. Martin taking the UT job before Painter made a decision forced Purdue to cave because it left them with no backup. There was no chance Painter was leaving once Martin took this job.

Please, the "source" is one of his coaches throwing his name out there so he and his staff can get a raise. Pearl did the same thing when the Memphis job came up.

interview at Illinois = raise at UT. That is why he wants the interview! He wants the Benjamin Franklins!
