I would be shocked if Martin left for a lateral move, BUT you have to acknowledge that it's completely possible.
It could be argued that for regional purposes in recruiting, Illinois would not be a lateral move from Tennessee. It's in a better basketball conference. The entire staff is from Illinois. It is the state university and located close to Chicago (unlike Knoxville is to Memphis), where the current staff has recruiting connections (Webster imparticular).
Not saying its a slam dunk better job than Tennessee, just playing devils advocate. I guess it has the potential to be better faster.
And what if UT fired him?
Fair enough. Like I've said before, I know little about programs not named Tennessee.
Martin took this job knowing that Purdue had a possible opening coming up.
He's not leaving after one year to take a rival's job. Illinois ain't a dream job like Kiffin for USC.
