Martin wants an extension and am sure a raise (rumor)

Even though I'm a fan, I'm not sure this is the best thing for Cuonzo or Tennessee right now.

Why not? So he is supposed to go into recruit's homes and say "I want you to come play for me at the University of Tennessee but my contract is only for 2-3 years of your 4, so you'll have a new coach for a year or 2. But that's ok, I'm sure you'll love him. Don't know who it is, but you'll love it."

1 year extention is plausible. A raise is not. Good move.

Hart seems to be very fiscally conscious. I'd say if Martin does get a raise, it will be very minimal.

Making this move to extend him now is smart if done the right way. Most fans will not realize it and will just complain that we are extending a coach that has yet to make the big dance.

Exactly, he does not deserve it. Hart needs to tell him lets wait and see how this season plays out.

And if that happens, and Martin can't sign a good class because the players want a coach that has a contract for his entire eligibility, don't come on here complaining about Martin ruining Tennessee basketball. Would you sign with a team where the coach only has 2 years remaining on his contract? I sure as Hell wouldn't.

You understand that what you speak of could go on forever right? What an incredibly asinine point.

Do that and then kiss the 2014 recruiting class goodbye.

Good, I hope he doesn't get to sign any of his players. He is one of the worst recruiters in the country. We'd be better off not taking anyone and keeping the scholarships for the next year.

The stupidity that sometimes comes out of our athletic department and the way they give away money like candy it wouldn't surprize me if he got a raise. If he finally has a good year next year then expect for Hart to give him the moon

If its an extention only, not sure why people would complain. Only thing it does is help with recruiting. He gets no extra money if he fails, if he wins he is getting a raise and a longer extension anyways. Why not do something as an AD to help your coach out with a chance to make your program better?

Oh please, John Pelphrey recruited the best of his career when he was on the hottest of seats. Maybe being near the end of a contract would actually motivate this guy to sign a decent recruiting class.

Because coaches never break their contract to go somewhere else.....

Yeah, cause he has been trying his damnest to sign low rated classes. Quit trolling and move along.

I find it amusing that when it's for Martin's benefit it is not about the university, but the same posters yell to high heaven that the university should come first.

No recruited has it etched in stone that a coach will be there the entire time of his college career. Wait till he accomplishes a tournament berth anyway, if he doesn't get there this year then why pay him more money for not being successful.

It is the programs benefit, it basically does nothing for Martin. No extra money involved and if he gets fired then a buyout will get negotiated anyways. One year does nothing but give the appearance of stability. Does that appearance upset people?

Lol

We are top 30 class this year, and though it's early are ranked 20th in the 2014 class at this point. How you come to the conclusion that that equals worst recruiter in the country is beyond me.

The 2014 rankings aren't out yet, most teams haven't signed a single player yet and UT has signed one 3*.

So let me get this straight, "everyone" gives their coaches contracts for an "appearance of stability" but a recruit who is worried about the coaches contract is not able to see through this common practice? Sounds far fetched.

Happens all the time, its the world of contracts.

Because he ought to be able to bring in significantly better talent consistently, not just a bunch of 3rd tier guys. It's really not a hard sell at all. Not sure why you think this is such a difficult place to recruit to.
