Mayweather & Pacquiao

For the first time in years boxing is on free TV almost every weekend. A horrible fight just set huge PPV numbers, and everybody in the world is talking about it. But obviously the sport is dead.

Not dead, hobbling on one broken leg, yes. The marketing for this fight was incredible. It brought boxing to the forefront in an effort that saw the last two remaining stars in the sport square off. Then all these people saw it and went "well wtf was that?". Should we all have known it would be boring? Sure, but everyone just accepted the hype. I realize it did the biggest PPV ever. But I feel like afterwards it did more harm than good. The non boxing fans, for the most part, left this disappointed. Everyone expected more. Now the glamour of the last two stars is over, and people are back to not caring about boxing. My dad is a pretty big fan. I grew up with him showing me Tyson, Lennox Lewis, some others I can't remember. Those were exciting. Last night was not for people that don't know the ins and outs of boxing. It's becoming a niche sport like horse racing. Vegas, rich people, and the gambling aspect will keep both sports afloat, but to a common sports fan it's definitely on the decline.

What's the viewership for the free fights? Come Monday, no one will care about boxing. The big PPV numbers have been for, surprise, Mayweather fights. I'll say it again, he's a great marketer/promoter.

I used to love boxing in 90s and early 2000s. Hadn't really followed it since and admittedly bought into the media hype of this fight as Saturday went on. Thankfully I didn't pay for it. I did lose sleep which is annoying.

This. As someone who never really has watched boxing, after last night, I plan to keep not watching boxing. It felt like a complete waste of time.

Actually it's doing quite well and none of the promoters really care that this is the only fight that you'll watch. Boxing is very much a niche sport and it'll never be what it once was from a popularity standpoint but it'll keep on chugging along making money and selling out in Vegas or Dallas or New York or wherever they decide to hold a fight.

what was it the mascot from the commercials ? Did you find out -- thats kind of strange

It was. And no, I never found out. It was definitely weird though. I've always that "King" (or whatever that call him) was extremely creepy.

I was listening to Dan Lebatard on ESPN radio Friday. He Nailed it. This fight was, as he predicted, "a toddler slap fight."

Being on free tv shows its dead. If wrestlemania shows up on free tv it would show wwe is dead. Boxing left free tv because it didnt need it...now it does. That fight was a joke. It was a joke.

I am more kissed at Manny. He let him off the ropes every time and threw zero uppercut when he had him on the ropes.

I wish all of these experts would stand in the middle of the ring and get hit square in their caulk garages before they'd pontificate on fighters being "cowards" "hiders" "toddlers" etc

Yes, because Mayweather knocking out an out of shape commentator would prove how tough he is.

That post would make a little more sense if there wasn't wrestling on regular tv almost every day of the week

Wouldn't matter what he threw at mayweather when he had him on the ropes he wasn't going to catch him clean with it nobody ever does. I can count on my hands the number of clean power punches he's gotten caught with since the sugar Shane fight

For everybody that is complaining, going into this fight did you honestly expect Floyd to change up what he's been doing for years and made him one of the best defensive fighters ever just because of the price of the ppv?

another stupid hate post. Floyd threw more and landed more punches. He used excellent defense and a great jab to outclass a one dimensional Manny. Yeah let's blame Floyd because Manny couldn't hit him. Keep letting the hate flow.

I haven't watched or kept up with boxing in almost 30 years. It was great/must see in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Somewhere in the mid 80's, it lost it's luster for me. I couldn't name 3 current boxers if I had to. From everything I've read and heard, this fight was predictable, boring and without any merit. But, hey............money$$.

After taking the time to consider what I watched last night, I've come to the conclusion that it was most overrated and over-hyped sporting I've ever seen. Given the amount of publicity it received and the money it brought in, I've never seen a worse even put on a pedestal like that. With that being said, it's not the biggest letdown I've ever encountered because I expected the fight to suck. It was always going to suck because Mayweather fights always do. Only stupid people pay money to watch him and consider him a good fighter. He's a good defender, terrible fighter. A good fighter would actually inflict damage and as you saw, he inflicted none. His 148 punches landed did as much damage as giving Manny 180 strokes. Would I really win a fight by tickling another guy more than he was able to tickle me because I was able to get my hands on him more and then I proceed to run away because I got more tickles in? Mayweather just got paid a hundred million dollars to tickle Manny. Manny threw almost 500 punches, had 0 cosmetic damage done to him and wasn't even out of breath during his interview. But Mayweather somehow won a fight... a fight that inflicted zero damage. Let's be honest, boxing isn't fighting when talking about Mayweather-esque "fights". If it were, Manny would have won for controlling the ring as Mayweather just dodged from corner to corner of the ring. If you used a circle(like in wrestling) in the ring that didn't cover the corners and you were punished for being backed out of the circle(to avoid fighting and or getting pummeled), Mayweather would lose in some of the most lopsided fights ever. But yeah... this is probably the worst thing I've ever seen given the hype. I'd rather watch a replay of JDS/Caine's 60 second fox fight on repeat for the same length as the fight last night took. I really hope this is the end of boxing, what a rubbish sport. Their best "fighter" of all-time(winning percentage) is praised and paid to avoid fighting for 12 rounds. Maybe now that the cult followers of boxing are the only ones remaining(similar to scientology) as everyone runs for the hills, maybe boxing will evolve and actually start scheduling fights themselves. Even the league is run by a bunch of meat heads who are too stupid to run a legit league that functions correctly. Why get involved with scheduling fights when Mayweather can just wait til the best fighters are 40 years old before he fights them. Same thing... it's always a proud day when a son beats his washed up dad because father time has taken it's toll. Mayweather is just as proud whether he wins by knock out or wins by decision, whether he wins against the best or beats up on a nobody, beats someone in their prime or beats a geezer. He thinks 48-0 speaks for itself as if every 1 of that 48 doesn't have a name attached it. 3/4 of the names are garbage and the other 1/4 was washed up by the time he got around to them. And by getting around to them, I mean intentionally picking fights he could win to bolster his misleading record. Mayweather has never will never challenge himself to fighting the best in their prime.

If Mayweather wants a real fight, he should train for a year and fight Couture. 51 year old Coutuer wouldn't even need one 5 minute round to knock Mayweather out and wouldn't need more than a minute to submit Mayweather and break his arm, leg and or neck. Any of his choosing really as Mayweather would be made his b****. Hell, Mayweather wouldn't make it out of the 1st round against an MMA fighter who was just signed on for their first UFC fight. What would Mayweather do? He doesn't have the power to knock them out in a fight and throwing punches is the only fighting Mayweather knows. In otherwords, Mayweather isn't even a real fighter as his only form of fighting inflicts little to no damage and he's always on defense. It's pathetic. Calling him a fighter is a misrepresentation of the definition of fighting. Boxing clearly has created it's own definition as they reward their boxers(not fighters) for avoiding getting hit even if they inflict no damage in return. Damage doesn't matter, contact does. Even if the contact is stroking, good enough for the judges/boxing because contact was made. Your champion... some guy who touched another guy.

Yep... he sure looks and act like someone who just lost a fight. The only mark on his face looks like blemishes I get on my face for having bad skin. This is what it looks like after a fight has been lost...

That's what the outcome of losing a fight looks like. Not some guy giving an interview with zero marks on his face, having this to say about his opponent, "he didn't even do anything". When you lose a fight, you know what the opponent did. It's obvious as you're bleeding and or have a concussion and don't know where the f you're at. Manny could put a little bit of foundation on that blemish and go do one of his modeling photoshoots tomorrow if he wanted without anybody noticing he just "lost a fight". Last night I watched a boxing match(a bad one at that), I in no way watched a fight. After Mayweather's career and seeing how he obtained his undefeated record, I'll never refer to boxing as fighting again. Nobody should. The lone undefeated boxer isn't even a good fighter in comparison to some of the people he "fights"(boxes). Yet, he's undefeated. Only in boxing would this guy be undefeated. He'd never be undefeated in fighting.

Honestly, I don't think I can take anything you say seriously anymore.

Floyd was bleeding and Manny had zero damage inflicted to him

Good to know if I punch you once though, you'd beat me in the fight for giving me two hand jobs in retaliation. You made more contact so I guess that makes you the winner.

And here's a page of MMA fighters tweeting about the fight....

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao in Tweets: Pros react to Mayweather's decision win - MMA Fighting

Basically every single one was pulling for Pacquaio as they know what real fighting is and that Mayweather is not a real fighter, just a boxer.

One of the MMA fighters literally said...

@RondaRousey would literally murder @FloydMayweather in a real fight, that's why I don't watch boxing. Lol #boxing #MayweatherPacquiao

And he's right. I said a 51 year old couture could win a fight against 38 year old Mayweather but I realized that's too obvious as Couture was a great fighter. That's why I turned to saying a newly signed UFC fighter without a UFC match under his belt would also embarrass Floyd in the first round. Now you have an actual UFC fighter upping my point by claiming that Floyd would lose a female fighter. Again, it's probably true because Floyd's not a fighter, he's a boxer. When people say "watching the fight tonight" it's totally misleading. They should say "watching the match tonight" as it's not a fight.

Don't care if I'm disliked because my opinion, I just don't care. Just like boxing just doesn't care what matches take place and when. Anyways, I'm just calling it like I see it and I know what a fight looks like as well as what the end result of a fight looks like. That was not a fight last night. I've seen a pair of 10 year old brothers go at it harder than that and inflict more damage while play fighting. As Manny said, Mayweather didn't do anything and Manny's face showed as much. He looked about the same as when he walked into the ring.

Haha, you're not disliked for an opinion, you're disliked because you're ridiculous. I don't doubt that there's a good chance a great MMA fighter could survive against a boxer but, with MMA gloves, most boxers would stand and knock the fsck out most grapplers.

I mean, seriously, do people really like slap fighting for points? That's what last night was. And this is the best boxing supposedly has to offer.

No thanks, I'm good. UFC is a much better product than this sad display. This is shirtless fencing. Neither of these guys were going for the kill. This was see who could get the most points. Not fighting.
