McElroy questioning UT offense

Anyone without orange colored glasses on has been questioning it here also, but we get called crazy. O line, even when 100% has looked questionable. Receivers can't get open. Nico has made some questionable throws, that have been labeled as pro level, but against better competition would have been picked off. Heupel didn't slow down against Oklahoma out of respect or because the defense was so good, he did it because our "throw game" is not up to standards and didn't want it "exposed on tape".

Defense has done what it's supposed to do, but we haven't played anyone capable of scoring. Our number 1 draft pick has been neutralized all season and continues to watch his draft stock fall and that's been against horrible team's.

Truth is, we don't know what we have until we play the elites. Arkansas should be a decent test for our defense. When Bama comes to town in a couple of weeks, we will truly know. And hopefully we are improved and a true complete team

If we were gauging any of our opponents, we'd point out and say the same thing. They haven't played anyone, pass game looks sus, defense is inflated, etc.
I disagree with the bolded part above. I agree our passing game is not where we want it to be, but he clearly took his foot off the offensive petal since the only chance Oklahoma had to win was if we gave them a pick 6 ((as Auburn did) or set them up on short fields. Add to that the fact that we were using second team tackles, and the strategy was perfect. It wasn't to hide anything.

Oklahoma beat Auburn 27 to 21, I think when we see how Auburn plays vs Georgia we will see something to compare. If UGA shuts Auburn out maybe Oklahoma's D is not as elite as some think, although transitive games sometimes give false narratives we have fun talking about something.
All true. I think Auburn's offense is slowly improving. Hugh Jackson does know offense, he just doens't have a good QB at Au just yet, but maybe one of them will rise to the occasion. I certainly don't think Auburn will be shut out by uga

Defense and run games travel well. Not always the same with passing games.

I think that explains the OU game just fine and hopefully the pass game gets cleaner for Arkansas.

Re: "OU has a good D. Anybody who says otherwise doesn't have film or stats to back that statement up."

Maybe so but they are ranked 48th.
The best defense OU had was an over-watered field. Remove that, and the Vols would have buried them, exhumed the bodies and replanted them at the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility.

Yes, Auburn looked good last week first half, then the 2nd half happened. I not sure but if Auburn keeps it together and the morale doesn't take a nose dive, they could surprise a better team down the road. Like you said Hugh Freeze knows O and Derrick Nix was great OC at Ole Miss last year and they could surprise if they keep the team chemistry together and the QB can put a whole game together sans the turnovers.

Thats why I included film too. Stats only tell part of the story this early in the season. OU has faced much tougher competition than somebody like 5. Minnesota, 12. Army, and even 13 Ole Miss. I would even argue we are a little suspect because we truly have not faced a good offense yet, but have taken care of business against subpar offensive teams. Our defense stats are incredible against those bad offenses.

Tennessee and even Auburn are good offensively, so that OU unit has been tested. Is OU's D as good as UGA and Bama's? Probably not, but the film breakdown is pretty interesting. Their front 5 are all around 300+ lbs, but move much faster than you think athletes of that size would. They play disciplined ball. Look at how they ate up all our TE and screen looks, and didn't let us get curl back routes.

They limited Auburn to 21 points even though Aub dominated all offensive stats in that game. The D ultimately won them that game as Thorne bit on a fake blitz into a delayed zone read by an LB. That was a really good play call.

I don't think that it's necessarily that our passing game needs to improve so much as we need our passing game to get more reps. We haven't seen it be utilized to it maximum potential throughout an entire 60 minute ballgame yet this year. We all know that CJH throttled down the offense during the Oklahoma game. He did. Don't kid yourself. That's understandable going into Norman and playing with a lead with both starting OT's out. He was true to General Neyland's Maxim of protecting our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ballgame. Other than the OU game, Nico and the rest of the starters really haven't had that much live game action. They didn't play the entire second half of the Chattanooga game, and they only played 1 1/2 quarters in the Kent St. game. That's a lot of live game reps that they haven't had yet this year. In some ways, that's a good thing, but there's no substitute for live game situations. Having a healthy OL will be huge this week and hopefully we'll see some pretty large stats at the end of the game.

We saw OU load the box and cover the receivers on several occasions. When Nico dropped back no one was open and on the fumbles they took to long to get separation. We will find out tomorrow who was at fault.

True but we have something to do with that.

Also, thats the relatively meaningless yards. In the way more important state of scording D, OU is 26th. We also called off the dogs.

I will agree that the OU defense is not "elite" but they are definitely good, and certainly way above average. And I mean literally, in a statistical sense. :)

Lots of opinions out there

Tennessee gets Alabama at home. I think the Vols — backed by one of the most balanced, yet explosive offenses in the country — knock off the Tide. From there, the only other difficult game figures to be a road trip to Georgia, but if Alabama can light up the Bulldog secondary, so can Josh Heupel and crew. The Volunteers make the SEC title game.

Man, it must be exhausting going through life this pessimistic all the time.

Heupel literally said himself ON THE FIELD after the OK game that he pulled back because the defense was playing so well so where does that fit in your narrative? I’ll wait..
Maybe it was to keep the young guys morale up? Maybe it was cause he knew the cameras were in his face? He could have told him that on the sideline during the game. Was odd to me honestly. Heupel is a killer, we all know this.

He is just hedging his other articles so either way he can say he was right.

Don't know if he's doing it for that reason but I do think anybody could look at the Auburn game and question whether Oklahoma has a top tier defense. And if they don't we haven't played against one so it's difficult to know how strong our offense is.

As important as the bye week has been to heal up, it's also given our coaches some extra time to tweak the passing game. I think we'll see some improvements Saturday, as long as our players can execute.

I think he’s doing us all a disservice by comparing OU’s first SEC game at home, gameday in town, against their NC winning QB to their first road SEC game. I truly believe OU threw everything that had physically and emotionally at our game.

I actually read the article...he is saying that we are in the top five in most offensive categories, and maybe our offense is not that elite. I would tend to agree our numbers were inflated against Kent State and Chattanooga, but we are a legit top 10, or at worst, top 20 offense. Or will be by seasons' end.

Arkansas will in fact be a good test for us.
Unless we put a fifty burger on them. Then they will all be saying that Arky ain't that good.

Go VOLS. Just win.
