McElroy questioning UT offense

Good lord. A few folks with the negative talk and questions because of the Oklahoma game. Their field was absolute trash. Tall grass, wet grass, players slipping like they’re on ice. It was pathetic of Oklahoma and what was needed to slow our offense down. Although low class and chicken sheet of Oklahoma, it worked. Now we hear, “The Vol offense is in question”, yada, yada, yada. “The WR’s can’t get separation because of only 2 big pass plays against Oklahoma”. “Maybe this defense and that defense isn’t as good as we thought because the Vols offense isn’t as good as we thought”.

Some folks find misery in everything.

If the Hog field is dry and in good shape, we’ll find out a little more this Saturday but I’m expecting the Vols to win big to make a statement. I’m going to set back and enjoy this upcoming win over the Hogs.

When Nico dropped back no one was open and on the fumbles they took to long to get separation. We will find out tomorrow who was at fault.

I don't think the receivers took too long to separate. On the first fumble, Tennessee absolutely had one receiver who had beaten their man on that scissors route, and had a huge window with the defensive back out of position behind his route. Actually, they had multiple guys because Oklahoma's safety got stuck looking, but - anyway - the fumble happened because Nico wasn't quite ready to trust throwing early and Davis just flat whiffed on the block. It was six on five in Tennessee's favor. Just didn't block the linebacker.

The hit came at about 2.8-3.0 seconds, right in the middle of the throwing motion. If Iamaleava gets that extra 0.25-0.5 seconds, he completes the throw and it's one of those big bomb touchdowns everybody loves.

Also, in looking at that screenshot from the fumble, minus the missed assignment that is a great pocket.

The ones who are negative, aren't specific.

Yep. Fortunately the lowest...lowest our defense is ranked nationally in ANY stat that matters is 6th. Top 5 in yards, points allowed, yards per play, against the run, against the pass....you name it. Defense travels. Defense rarely has off games unlike offenses, and defense wins championships. Top 10 offense AND top ten defense can win it all for sure. Shoot ...top 20 offense and top 20 defense can win it all when we play likely the 2 best teams in the nation in the regular season.

Literally EVERY opportunity is in front of this 24 team. Thats all we can ask for. Nationally televised games on Saturday nights over and over again as well to boost exposure and recruiting. We are in GREAT SHAPE. We could honestly lose to both Bama and pups and STILL be a 5 or 6 seed in the playoffs. This is where many services project us being as of right now. Amazing coaches, amazing team...at the best university in America. GO VOLS
I will have to disagree about the seeding if we lose to Alabama and Georgia. That will be a minimum, and I emphasize minimum, of a five point drop which puts us at #9. The top four teams are in. The next four to five slots belong to conference champions. This could easily be teams ranked 15th and higher and even unranked teams. So that leaves three or four open slots. It is very possible that a #9 and #10 ranked team is left out of the playoffs. So this is how I see it; we lose to one and we are in. We lose to both and we’re left out.

He’s not wrong so far. The passing game has not been great against decent teams and the OL is a risk at tackle. Will need to be better to play with Bama and GA.

Nico could have extended that pocket by stepping up into it. He’ll get there…

Our passing offense isn't a weak spot. Can you elaborate? Specifically?
Specifically, I think Nico's youth has shown in the last couple of games. Even against Kent St. he looked indecisive and held the ball too long. In Oklahoma, after the oline problems, CJH had to throttle things down. That game wasn't out of reach by any means.

Nico's ball security is also a concern, Heupel's teams have been very good in that respect the last couple of years so, an area the Vols also need to improve in.

Look, I'm no expert but, the eye test says we aren't quite where we need to be to make serious run at the SEC championship.

Let’s all get real mad at an analyst who is paid to give his analysis and tweet at him. That will show him. He better think twice before he says anything other than praise and adoration for Tennessee. The gall.

Don't know if he's doing it for that reason but I do think anybody could look at the Auburn game and question whether Oklahoma has a top tier defense. And if they don't we haven't played against one so it's difficult to know how strong our offense is.
I think field conditions, their pass rush and our defenses performance were more of a factor in how our offense looked.

Our offense didnt have to put up numbers in that OU game. That was obvious. Nico doesnt have alot of yards passing because he hasnt had to pass. hes barely played 12 quarters of football.

McElroy is an idiot. First of we shut the offense down for most of the second half. Second OU was decimated with injuries for the game with Hogs. He is just trying to convince himself that we aren't going to run the Bammers out of Neyland.

I was initially afraid of that but with other contenders dropping games (like Ole Miss vs UK, Notre Dame to NIU, USC to Michigan, Utah to Arizona, etc.), our competition is slowly getting squeezed out.

Our SoS may hurt a little unless Oklahoma keeps winning, Kentucky continues to perform at a high level, and NC State turns things around.

However, with the way things are turning out, 10-2 maybe enough. Ole Miss losing to UK really helped and I think Missouri will drop a few. B1G contenders haven't looked good either.

EDIT: How we look against Alabama and Georgia will matter too. If it looks like the 2023 Georgia matchup against both, yeah we may not get in.

We’ve not had to pass because our run game has been excellent so far but don’t let that stop your dumb narrative.

That wasn't true against Oklahoma. We blew it on the first and second offensive possession of that game as well as the first possession of the second half. We had great field position and momentum and should have converted those drives.

No need to be a defensive little Nancy. Our passing game has been pretty suspect at times. I don't care if you know that or not. I sure hope it becomes stellar.
