McElwain to be next Florida coach (merged)

He's a good coach.

He had a good stint at Bama. Had a good year at Colarado this year. He has proven he can win as a head coach, which is more than Muschamp could say.

I hope Florida overpaid for the hot name of 2014. 7.5 mil to buyout his contract is a lot. If he doesn't pan out this will set Florida's program back years.

Instead of a defensive minded coach (Muschamp), Foley went with an Offensive minded coach in McElwain. He was good as the OC at Bama a few years back, and I expect him to come in and put some points on the board. Colorado St has one of the best offenses this year and sit at 10-2. I'd say it's a good hire for them. But, hey we got Butch Jones Baby!!!!

I'm sure he is a fine coach and honestly, it isn't a hard job to win there given the talent pool in Florida, but this hire doesn't put worry in me like when Meyer was hired.

That is what we are hoping for. Let them go through purgatory for a change.

Surprising that it's not a "big name" hire but it is a solid hire. I think he will do well...unfortunately.

CSU's AD agreed back in June to "reduce" or re-negotiate the buyout should a "dream job" come available to McElwain. I'm guessing that's what happened, because UF already owes Muschump $7M, and another $7.5M would've put them $14.5M in the hole before they could ever pay McElwain anything.

I think it's a decent hire. I just hope he's not a complete jackwagon like his two most recent predecessors.

Good hire. He took CSU from 3-9 to 10-2 in 3 seasons, which is the kind of success you want to see a coach get at that level.

It's probably not flashy enough for some fans but UF could have done a lot worse.

In 2012 CSU, according to fbsfootballschedules.com, was 4-8. Regardless, I took a second and threw together the evaluation of his record against the talent of his competition.

I don't profess to be an expert in the MWC but what this shows is that he went from under performing by 2 games in relation to talent, to over performing by 2 games, for an overall net effect on talent of 0. If this translates directly to the SEC, meaning that he will perform within the standard deviation from talent at UF, they will be in decent hands. Time will tell but this likely isn't a paradigm shifting hire in relation to the rest of the SEC, but could certainly put UF back in its place of the top third of the SEC.

For comparison, here is what Jones career looked like before UT.

Twenty plus years of coaching experience, two NCs as Bama's OC, elevated CSU's program from loser to 10-game winner in 3 years.

Our defense is stacked with talent for the next couple years.

Hopefully McElwain can make chicken salad out of our chicken $h!t offense.

I'm cool with the hire.

He's a professional...don't expect sound bites.
