McElwain to be next Florida coach (merged)

Your points are valid.

Good news is Foley has been fiscally responsible for a very long time.

Our recruiting expenses are relatively low considering our talent pool's footprint, and UF doesn't need to schedule unnecessary OOC road games 2-3 time zones away.

This guy is underwhelming for the money paid, but seems like there is a lot of potential. The linchpin is always recruiting. Granted, he's got a huge built in advantage being in Florida, but it won't be automatic due to FSU being legit finally. I'm on the fence as to whether or not this guy scares me.

Where are all the "until we start acting like a top their program and go out and hire a proven head coach like Alabama or Florida would do if they had to hire a new coach" people?

I guess if one Saban ex-coordinator doesn't work you just try another if you are Foley :dunno:

Gator fans are going to give any new hire a short leash after 3 years of Muschamp -- probably the most impatient, unforgiving fan base in the nation. They had to overpay him just to get him to put himself into that meat grinder. My prediction -- he's gristle in 3 years.

They could hire the Kardashian sisters to all be Co-Head Coaches and they would still beat us.

I agree especially the way this staff choked the last two years.. That n the candy loss still makes me wonder if this staff understands the sec..

They r 0 n 6 against the big 3 n that has to change n 2015..

I take it you haven't checked the VN Football Forum the past 2-3 months.

And it appears If McElwain is hired, UF sinks or swims with him for 5+ years, given his buyout is anywhere close to what it was at CSU. I'd be shocked if that's the last negotiating point before ink hits paper.

The last thing Foley wants is to pay three coaches at the same time. Who does that anyway? :)

They did give him another year even after going 4-8, which is worse than any coach in TN history.

And as horrible as Muschamp was at florida, he was still able to remain undefeated against Tennessee, beat FSU, and got to a BCS bowl game during his tenure.

Imagine if dooley during his tenure had beat florida, alabama, and taken us to a BCS bowl game. Tennessee would never think to get rid of him.

I'm a VFL and alum that lives in Ft Collins (25 years). I have been through the Earl Bruce days, the Sonny Lubick era and all the cruddy years before Coach Mac arrived. Incidentally, I own a little bar in old town FtC and had beers with CJMc several times there. After discussing the future with him, It was apparent that his goal was to turn the program around, get a new stadium and facilities, then move CSU to a better conference, preferably the Big 12.

The town of Fort Collins is a beer town, a weed town and a very fun town to live in. And yes, there are some deep rooted football fans here, but not attached to CSU because of the melting pot (pun intended) culture here. Lots of SEC fans but also lots of Big 10, Big 12 and PAC12 here too....

So the city didn't support the new stadium plans very well and left Coach Mac in a tough position because it's my understanding that it was part of his agreement with CSU to help keep him here long term. It's a 50/50 opposition to proponent mix and the opponents were very loud and visible. In my opinion, it made his future here almost inevitably opaque and voila, FL comes in and snatches him.

The stadium was/is privately funded and yet, the residents of FtC fought it hard saying that is money better spent on something else. Not sure what? I screamed "Successful football is a money maker!!! And it will enhance the University and city tax revenue! If you don't believe me go ask Boise Idaho and Eugene Oregon!"

Anyhow....

He is an offensive mind and gets his players to play at full potential...and beyond. He was recruiting well and had transfers like Dee Hart from Bama that made a huge difference in the way CSU played football, mostly in terms of ground speed (on a different level). They were very efficient and balanced this year, particularly on offense, with three players in top 10 skill categories in the country.

IMO, Florida just made a great hire and I hate it because I'm VFL.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

Damn, Jake, thanks for the "inside scoop" on this guy and his sitaution. Looks like Foley has done his homework and the Gators have struck again. Time will tell, but, thanks to your post, I think we've got a good feel for this guy and I think the S.E.C. head coaching talent just got an upgrade. And the name of your bar is.....? I'd love to stop in Ft. Collins and have a few cold ones some time. Many thanks....

Could be a cautionary tale for some Vol fans. Florida has the facilities, the program, and in the middle of one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country and it is still difficult to attract what many would call a "top tier" coach to come get beat up and beat down in the SEC.

Their facilities suck

You guys will definately be on that pony for a while. Good or bad but we are no different so i'm not judging. I think our guy on paper and in the financials looks better but you guys still have the financial advantage overall. Foley did meh overall which is about where Hart is at depending on this Tyndall fiasco.

It is mildly annoying to read complaints form some Florida fans that its not a "home run hire." WTF does that even mean? Short of someone huge coming in from the NFL, there is no home run hire left out there. Plus, our informal overtures might well have been rebuffed by the likes of Freeze, leaving us with little range to choose from.

The fact is, the guy did well as an OC under Saban. Well, Muschamp was a solid defensive coordinator and we see how that turned out. Now, this fellow has some HC experience and he has done well with CSU, so that's surely a plus. But bottom line is that its not like he's "the hot commodity" and we just don't know how he's going to turn out. Might be great. Might be ho hum.

We'll know a lot when we see whether he is able to turn on the afterburners here in recruiting. Some others have posted previously about how we might keep some of the defensive staff because they have contacts in South Florida and can recruit there. That's great on defense. But I'll say it again and again -- the key is to get into the gold mine that is the Miami-Belle Glade scene for WR's and RB's. If this guy and whatever staff he puts together can do that, then we'll be successful. If not, its same old same old.

Particularly the 6'5" receiver types with blazing speed. They are down there. You just have to win them over.

And before this week, that's about all I knew about him.

LW, not trying to start anything, just talking football. Next year, uf appears to be thin at oline and once again the schedule will be tough. Whats a realistic record next year? Will uf fans be patient with a 7-5 first season?

I'll add that I was pulling may hair out on here months ago when the recruiting sites were listing Florida's verbal commits. And not a one from south of Lake Okeechobee. That told me all I needed to know about where we were headed. Let's see if this guy can turn that around..

Its hard to get kids to commit with talks about muschamp getting fired. IMO, had given another year, muchamp would have landed another top 10 class.

You know good and darn well what happened. Not only was Muschamp offense (any of them) the bubonic plague for top pro stylr recruits but MOST importantly his juice got cut off. The juice will crank up simply because it is a new guy and a new day. If he is smart he takes the Kiffin approach and brings in a host of bad ass coaches to really turn up the pizzazz. I think the Butch approach is better for UT and long term but the splash names deal can be an instant win for a guy with less credence.

What's really crazy is that for the 2015 class UF doesn't have a single commit among the top 50 florida players.

In the 2014 they had 14 FL recruits. 2015 has only 4 so far.

That's how bad UF recruiting is right now.
