MCU phase 4 rumor and discussion thread

It's unreal to me after the success of the MCU SM that they can't come to an agreement to keep this going.

And I hate to tell Sony but if they take it back and reboot it yet another time, it will not do as well.

Feige tried to woo Sony before Amazing Spider-Man and Amy Pascal laughed at him. The MCU pulled the Spider-Man movie franchise out of the gutter. They will be shooting themselves in the foot if they don’t come to an agreement.

I'm almost 100% convinced Disney/Feige had this leaked to get the internet/fanbase in an uproar and to put pressure on Sony. Personally I don't think it was even close to being a done deal that Sony was pulling SM, it was just they were in negoiations. Disney didn't like how Sony was handing it so let it leak that Sony was walking away.

And while I can see Disney's side of it in the sense that their MCU movies have taken the movie line to new heights, I also think they need to see the bigger picture. It's not like they aren't raking in enough money, so I think PR wise it would suit them if they bent as much as they can. Although anyone who has ever negoiated anything knows Disney knew they weren't getting a 50/50 deal. My guess is they were hoping for as high as 70/30.

What I don't get is if Sony sticks with no agreement and SM is no longer in the MCU, why would they keep Holland as SM? He has one film left in his contract. So say they make a SM movie with him.....what exactly is the story? You can't reboot it because that wouldn't work, especially if Holland doesn't sign up for anymore films. You can't reference anything from the MCU, nor any characters like Stark, Happy Hogan, and Nick Fury. Do they just try to stick him in the Venom movies?

Seems to me if Sony goes all in, the better move would be to just wait a few years and completely reboot it, or even better just go Miles Morales. I think trying to make a non-MCU Holland SM movie would be a very bad move. The hardcore fans will likely skip it and casual fans are going to be confused as heck when suddenly SM makes no mention of Stark, the Avengers, Hogan, etc.

I still say a deal will be struck, but if not and Sony goes through with what they apparently have planned then it's going to likely be a pretty big clusterf.

Kevin Feige and The MCU have made Sony too much money and they've made Spider-Man too important going forward in The MCU for a deal not to get done. You don't do the cliffhanger at the end of Far From Home if you think you're going to lose the right to use the character.

They could make a Spider-Man movie that doesn’t involve any other MCU characters. Just put him against Doc Ock or whoever. Keep the tone of the MCU so fans assume it’s still connected.

The tricky part would be the Stark tech Spidey is still using. (Unless he ditched it in FFH, I haven’t seen it yet).

I don't see how they can do that and not reference anything that happened in the MCU, and especially how FFH ends.

People are calling Disney the bad faith actor here but IMO it looks like Sony didn't really want to seriously negoiate it. I see criticism for Disney coming in wanting 50/50, but Sony's reply was to renew the exact same deal. I seriously doubt Disney expected to get 50/50, they just started high. But Sony's reply seems to indicate to me at least that they went in with the mentality that they'd only agree to extend what they had and nothing more.

And I do think they are feeling like they are hot stuff since Venom did better than everyone thought and Spiderverse won an Oscar, but I'd argue the success of those movies is at least partially due to Marvel re-vitalizing the on screen character of Spider-Man. And the last 3 live action SM movies are all 100% on Sony.

This is going to end with Disney buying Sony.

From what I read on Forbes, Sony will be looking to dump Sony Pictures in the next 5 years because it's not really doing that much for them. SM is by far their biggest asset. The thing is though, if they sell the SM rights revert back to Marvel; they are not transferrable.

So actually it probably is a long play that Sony wants Disney to either buy all of Sony Pictures or just buy back the film rights.

Tom Holland just posted on Instagram 4 pictures of him and RDJ, with the caption "We did it Mr. Stark!"

So either Holland is letting us know some good news concerning SM in the MCU, he has terrible timing on his posts, or he's been hanging around Ryan Reynolds and is working on his troll game.

If Reddit is to believed (i.e. take with a grain of salt), a guy that broke the original Marvel/Sony deal is saying that the outlook is pretty good for a deal to be struck and all this public spat was a calculated move by Sony to get it out in the open to put the pressure on Disney. The problem is it backfired and the wrath is mostly against Sony. But both sides have the mentality that the deal is "too big to fail".

Also interesting is he's saying Watts (director of Homecoming and FFH) is not signed on for anymore films, and that the reports of Holland being signed for a 3rd solo film aren't exactly correct. Holland has the option of signing, but he is not locked in. And apparently he's getting involved behind the scenes becuase he's pissed because this costs him big time. He was being set up to be a big face in the MCU for a while and if this falls through, that's gone. He was apparently told the future MCU had his SM character in the New Avengers and probably being a part of the first Fantastic Four movie.

If true about Holland, that's pretty interesting since Sony's statement said they would go forward with Holland as SM but he can tell them no. Now having said that I'm not sure he'd walk away because even if it ends up non-MCU....I mean it's still getting to play SM.
