Megan Rapinoe & The US Soccer Team

Why did they agree to the contract in the first place then?
My guess is, that they didn't expect to ever be generating as much revenue as they have recently, nor could they have anticipated the men missing the World Cup in 2018. It's created some disparity. However, there is nothing wrong with expecting these women to live by the terms of a legally binding agreement.

This is just for the WC (which the men didn't even make in 2018) and it's for the entire world, not the US. Women's soccer is a much bigger revenue driver in the US than it is anywhere else. You have to compare total USWNT revenue to total USMNT revenue.
Yes, I have seen the US numbers. The Women have out generated the Men (barely) over the last few years.

All of the articles I have seen quoted with regards to “equal pay” reference the World Cup payouts. Thats why I used those revenue figures.

Seems to be a disconnect in most of the articles championing the women’s cause. They highlight the revenue in the US, then reference the WC payouts.

And I believe the Men & Women have completely different pay structures with US Soccer.

Sure. If they didn’t like the terms they shouldn’t have agreed to them. Pretty simple concept. Apparently now, since they’re in a stronger position, they realize that they can get a better deal so they’re currently renegotiating the one that they agreed to in 2017. Again pretty simple concept.

This deal ends in just 2 short years. Should they wait for 2021 to be here to start pushing for a better deal? That'd be the dumbest strategy ever. The fact that they accepted the deal has no bearing on whether or not it's what they deserve.

They left the negotiating table still pushing for equal pay and promising not to go on strike. They took the best deal they could get without interrupting play, and they've been working towards the future, much to the inexplicable chagrin of people who have nothing to gain by keeping them down.

What’s this got to do with the price of tea in China?
The U.S. women are producing more revenue than the men right now... because of their success. Obviously, that wouldn't be true if the men hadn't missed the World Cup last year - but they did (because they suck).

Wait what?

Revenue is all that should matter, as in how much can you generate. On field results are secondary.

The women only out generate the Men (barely) at the US level.

I agree but the on-the-field results are the reason the U.S. women are producing more revenue than the U.S. men right now, and we aren't talking about any other country in this discussion.

If the U.S. men were worth a damn, and had even (at a bare minimum) qualified for the World Cup in 2018, then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I thought you were implying that the Women deserved to be paid more because they “win” and the men “lose”. I fundamentally disagree with that position (though I see we are both talking about revenue, be it different pools).

I agree that the Women’s on field success is driving their increase in revenue.

Now the morons are bringing the NBA into this and while the womens soccer teams actually have a bit of a claim to equal, no way the WNBA has a shot at equal pay.

I watch the NBA and WNBA the exact same amount, so from my point of view, they deserve the same amount of pay based on what they get off of me.

The morons were already handing US soccer federal $ for the 2026 WC. Take their (our) money, and you get what you deserve

The women have made 5 finals and won 4 since 1991. The men have made the round of 16 four times since 1990.
North Dakota State has won like 4 championships in the last 5 years or something. their budget is 27 million. UT has embarrassed itself for a decade, but our budget is right around 150 million.

The fact that the U.S. women are generating more revenue than the men is the argument for equal pay. Their results are what is driving their revenue... while the inability of the men to qualify for last year's World Cup is what has kept their revenue stream stagnant.

The context for that post was that the men make significantly more $ if they do well in the WC, but you have to consider that they do well in about every other WC and the team isn't looking too strong right now for 2022.

My 12 year old son plays soccer and follows the game pretty closely so I know a little bit from listening to him... Fwiw, he says they suck and are only getting worse.

I'm kind of torn on the issue of equal at least for women's soccer as on the surface they do have a much more compelling argument than say the WNBA. I've always been for a woman/man to make equal pay when doing the same job.

They have been pretty dominant as of late in their sport but they it is a different league. It's not like they are competing in the mens league and winning and drawing this money. I know nothing about the mens or womens soccer teams/players etc.

If I am a really good Manager of the Mail room at work, should I make as much or more as a Sales Manager for a particular region that does really good work? They are different areas that bring in different revenue for the company.

And they're wasting one of the best they've ever had. Should be a crime

They’re not getting worse, the the crop of players born after ‘98, is actually terrific. The biggest problem is the group born in the early to mid 90’s, who should be entering their prime right about now, are bad, like really bad. A country like the US that doesn’t have a plethora of soccer talent can’t miss on an entire generation and expect to be competitive on the international stage.

I would say he's the best field player we've ever had. He may not surpass Dempsey and Donovan, but he's well past where they were at his age.
I actually had that first and erased it to not get in the discussion. Definitely the best field player I've seen. He deserves to be shown in the world cup stage

Odd how our young teams get to the quarters (?) And the old guys can't qualify.

Soccer is a young man's game. Prime for most ends at about 28-30. This works in favor of the powerhouses who have depth and works against countries like us.
