Memphis People, Chris Jones - What is this?

Ramar Smith is a completely different animal. He has been involved in very serious criminal behavior. Being warned that there may be character issues with players is very different than being informed that they are involved in serious criminal behavior. I completely agree that character should be closely considered when recruiting players and players such as Ramar should not have ever been recruited, but knowledge of serious criminal behavior is another matter completely.

Pearl, on at least two occasions, chose to believe Ramar Smith's denials over warnings from members of the KPD's division in charge of investigating gangs. Call that what you want.

Ramar Smith should never have been recruited by UT. Regardless of his talent level, his character was an issue and other top schools stopped recruiting him. If Pearl was warned by KPD that he was involved in gang activity, he should have taken action at that time. Asking a criminal if they are guilty when they haven't been caught will almost always result in a denial.

Far be it from me to defend Pearl, but if you choose to recruit a guy you probably owe him the initial benefit of the doubt. I do have some problem with him not being more diligent in getting at the truth after he was told a second time.

At that time, Pearl had to take chances. If he doesn't pick up Ramar, who do we get? If Pearl gets a lesser player, then people are pissed at the talent level. Yet, if Ramar turns out to be the thug he appears, then you have the issues occuring now (or then). You'd be amazed at how much trouble is out there with some of these recruits. Hopefully, though, Pearl is in a position where he doesn't have (or is smart enough not to) roll the dice with as shady a guy as Ramar.

Except for the fact that it was the university president that pursued the idea of him returning after Cal told him no, that's close to accurate.

I have been staying out of this argument but this is completely the opposite of what happened. First of all, the president is a she and Shirley Raines probably wouldn't have known Jeremy Hunt if he walked into her office and slapped her. (no pun intended) Raines lets RC do whatever needs to be done with the AD (big mistake). At the time, RC did whatever Cal wanted. Cal made that call, who sent it to RC to get his stamp, who sent it to Shirley to get her stamp.

It turned out well for Jeremy (and Cal) in the end of course.

Raines and RC never stopped Cal from telling the story that they were the ones who convinced him to take Hunt back. He told the story about a thousand times Hunt's senior season. I tend to think that they might have interjected if they thought their position was being misrepresented.

What's the alternative? Refuse to believe guys you recruited? I have no problem with Pearl taking a player's word the first time around. However, when the issue arises a second time, alarms should go off.

Cal ran his program in whatever way he wanted to, without much (if any) interjection from RC and definitely from Shirley.

How many armed robbers did Cal have? Also, remember that the murder at the Woodlands is still an open file. Keep that in mind when discussing Ramar Smith.

I just don't buy the "Cal is a staunch disciplinarian" argument. While Pearl has recruited a guy that has been charged with armed robbery, Cal has recruited guys that have solicited prostitutes, beaten their girlfriends, incited riots, engaged in an identity theft scheme, etc. I just don't see much of a difference. I know you have a different opinion and I respect that, but we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Change of subject here...but.... Gillespie to ISU?

Buddy of mine used to coach there and said 2 major donors that he still does business with have had several "informal" dinners with CBG to guage interest over the past 2 months.

It's certainly a possibility. I talked to two coaches shortly after the McDermott to Creighton announcement was official and Billy Clyde was the first guy they mentioned. His style of play is similar to Floyd and Eustachy, both of whom had pretty good success in Ames. Not sure what they are going to pay. If Clyde was willing to take a job at a really reduced rate, he'd be at Houston.

Good deal. My buddy said that one of the said boosters was one of ISU's top money guys and has been enamored with pushing BG for sometime. To the point where he wanted McDermott out to make it happen.

How difficult do you think it will be for BCG to recruit in Ames? Is that just a dead-end job?

It certainly didn't hurt Tim Floyd's future employment prospects. Eustachy was positioned to jump to the big time before the personal problems. There are a number of top JUCO programs in close proximity and the Big 12 has enough Texas ties that I would thing Clyde would be fine recruiting.

That article I quoted is about as objective as you are being in analyzing Pearl's off the field issues as compared with Calipari's. The fact is, Calipari has had just as many, and probably more, criminals playing for him than Pearl has. And for Cal to somehow be succesfully using his "players' record of good behavior" against us in recruiting is laughable, imo.

Right. Next hell tell us that the SEC is using old Miami videos to demonstrate sportsmanship in competition.

He had an outlaw program at Memphis and will eventually have the same at KY. He will recruit anyone who can help him win regardless of character issues. While Pearl has had problems with recruits, Cal is not the "Duke" of clean recruiting and discipline once he gets a player.

Back to Chris Jones for a minute, summary from the String Music Showcase in Franklin this past weekend.

Chris Jones – 5′10″ 170-pound G (Memphis Magic) – Jones shook off a lot of labels on his game this weekend. Coming off a state championship with Melrose High School in which he scored 35 points without an assist, Jones has been the definition of a scoring guard. Despite his scoring capabilities–which were definitely on display this past weekend– Jones got many teammates involved. He showed an unmatched quickness that helped lead the Magic to their championship. It has been evident that the Magic coaching staff has asked Jones to do a little bit more than score, something Jones looked completely comfortable with. Jones also possesses a crossover that made defenders dizzy while trying to guard him. There were numerous occasions where he shook off his defender, got into the lane, drew the help-side defense, and found the open big man for an assist.

Also...
Kevin Ware – 6′5″ 180-pound SG (Atlanta Celtics) – Ware had a relatively quiet weekend in Franklin, TN. The 2011 Tennessee commit didn’t do much to impress, nor did he do many things wrong to cause concern. Ware scored 10 points in his match-up against the Memphis Magic, but seemed to get lost on the court at times. Ware excels in transition, allowing his athleticism to create problems with his opponents. He posses good length and can play multiple guard positions, if needed. Ware needs to work on his outside shot and staying involved on both sides of the ball.

Pretty sure you were posting that Gillispie to Houston was a done deal a couple of weeks ago - after the required waiting period.

If Houston had been able come up with the money they initially indicated they had, he would be there. The Devil is always in the details. Some coaches are dumb enough to give in to a bait and switch. Clyde is neither dumb nor desperate enough to do so.

Looks like UConn has been handed down some sanctions today. I find it very interesting that the two guys mentioned, Cal and Calhoun, as working together to sabotage Pearl's recruiting because of what a "slimeball" UT's coach is, now have both received sanctions handed down from the NCAA. Pearl, on the other hand, has none.

Perhaps coaches like Calipari and Calhoun should make sure their own houses are in order before sanctimoniously working against a coach they don't like.
