Memphis People, Chris Jones - What is this?

I'm failing to see how dropping "Tennessee has produced more felons than NBAers under Bruce Pearl" or "you should get a load of the broad Pearl ditched his wife for" into a conversation with a recruit's family requires much effort. It's not like they have spend their entire hour talking about Pearl to get their point across.

"You should read about the investigations into the programs shortly after this guy left" We're not idiots hat. We know it goes on buddy. Its nothing new or reserved for pearl as you would have ppl believe. Doesn't matter who your staff is or where you coach, this is gonna go on. So why present it as if its exclusively UT's problem. I wonder why he didn't choose the other 250+ schools?!? Bunch of womanizers!

Btw hat, how many "felons" have we produced exactly?

Ramar is awaiting trial and I can't remember what Passley and Jackson pled to. Tyler Smith has entered a guilty plea. That would be a great recruiting pitch for Pearl to use. "UT, we plead 'em down."

I agree that it probably is something that is used against us in recruiting. But I'm not sure Cal wants to open that door. If I'm Pearl, I'd just respond by showing recruits this quote from an article:

Memphis has been a program of criminals ever since Calipari — a greasy sleaze whose last Final Four appearance was stricken from the record after it turned out his best player was getting paid by an agent all along — took over as coach in 2000 and began letting everything from inciting riots to marijuana possession go effectively unpunished. This is a team that values winning over anything else, and its penchant for allowing its players to roam the city punching out girlfriends and making it rain in clubs so long as they can hit a 3-pointer should let it coast past law-abiding teams to a championship.

Try going into a recruit's home and convincing them Tyler Smith isn't a felon. That'll be time well spent.

I'm still not sure what needs to be convinced. It's simple, you control your own actions. Tyler Smith probably would have had drugs and guns anywhere he would have attended school. Most recruits know that Pearl is not forcing guys to act any certain way off the court.

I get your other point in that Pearl needs to stay away from even recruiting these types of players. Of the five guys that he's got committed for the '10 and '11 classes, I think he's finally starting to get it.

Hence why you don't take players like that and save the scholarship for someone else. Just sayin.

I understand that part. But it's not like Pearl had a ton of other options at that time. Who was he going to save the scholarship for? Phillip Jurick?

Yeah, that's an objective view. I'm certain Cal will be glad to have parents compare Joey Dorsey getting in a fight in a nightclub to Ramar Smith committing armed robbery and Tyler Smith, et al packing heat and weed.

Or the investigations into his programs compliance practices @ every stop. (You left that out)

I'm not comparing Joey Dorsey to Ramar and Tyler Smith, but Dorsey was involved in multiple "fights" in that same nightclub. Some accompanied with shootings.

Also, Dorsey wasn't close to the only one making negative headlines from the Memphis basketball team during Cal's time there.

Or Tyreke Evans' involvement in a drive-by? I think there is ample mud to be slung from all sides... :good!:

What about burning a a girl's leg with a cigarette as a gang initiation?

Two weeks ago, Banks was arrested again. Once more, there was an alleged gang connection.

Englewood police say Banks used a lighted cigarette to burn a gang insignia into the leg of a 15-year-old girl. The burning, police say, was a gang initiation rite - three circles, in the form of a triangle, near the girl's right ankle. The circles are called "dog paws" and are considered by police to be an insignia for "The Bloods."

The school's basketball coach, John Calipari, the former Nets coach, seems blissfully unfazed. To Record sportswriter Dan Rosen, Calipari described Banks as "a little rough around the edges."

You're missing the point. It's pretty easy to drum up a little negativity about most coaches if you give it a little effort. There is no easier target than John Calipari to do just that to.

It happens, most do it, sometimes it's effective sometimes it's not.

Yeah, parents are really concerned about Marcus Camby's association with an agent. Look how it ruined his career. He's only made about 100 mil or so in salary during his NBA tenure.

I'm sure families all over American inner cities are terribly concerned with the 'AAs view on agents and standardized test scores.

It's all just spin now. You say that Cal can say that Pearl has kids who get busted for drugs and guns on his team. Well Ms. Single Mother, Cal allows his players to hit their girlfriends, participate in drive by shootings, etc without so much as a slap on the wrist.

Half the time it doesn't even have to be true to be effective.

Jeremy Hunt was suspended for an entire season. Sean Banks got tossed in the middle of a year. Tyreke Evans wasn't even charged with anything. On the other hand, Hunt got his degree and is making six figures playing overseas and Evans is the presumptive NBA Rookie of the Year. What are Ramar Smith, Tony Passley, and Josh Tabb up to these days?

If a program allows inaccuracies to substantially hurt their recruiting, it's a program run by imbeciles. That's why the type of stuff you mentioned about Cal doesn't stick at all. Some of it is about stuff nobody gives a damn about and the facts don't back the rest of it up. On the other hand, mug shots, NBA rosters, and a divorce decree pretty much validate the attacks on Pearl. That's the difference.

By the way, Iowa State is now officially a mess. They are actually now really getting what they deserve for their treatment of Eustachy. Losing a coach to the Valley is bad enough. Having hired a coach who would feel the need to make said move is even worse.

cough*Jeremy Hunt*cough
You mean the guy who was suspended for an entire season, got his degree, and is now making a nice living playing professionally? How does that compare with the accomplishments of Ramar Smith or Josh Tabb?

He wasn't suspended. He was permanently dismissed. Then reinstated when Cal realized he was woefully thin at guard.

Except for the fact that it was the university president that pursued the idea of him returning after Cal told him no, that's close to accurate.
