Meyer stepping down

Not very many and half of his numbers were mop up duty. They could have won without him.

I'll be willing to say they wouldn't have even gotten past UT in '06 without Tebow. How many 3rd or 4th and shorts did he convert in that game for them. I just remember leaving Neyland that night amazed at how he got the yardage EVERY time. And also wanting to bang my head against a wall because J. Wade's pick-6 that probably would have put the game away was called back on that BS roughing call.

RT @gregauman So just like Bowden was, FSU's Jimbo Fisher now dean of state of Florida's BCS programs, edging Skip Holtz by a few weeks.

Meyers Official Statement:

“I have been a Division I football coach for the last 25 years and, during that time, my primary focus has been making a difference in the lives of the young men I have been so fortunate to have coached and building championship programs,” Meyer said. “At this time in my life, however, I fully grasp the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one. But, after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I’ve been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been. My family has shared both the commitment and the sacrifice required to coach at this level for so long and I would not have enjoyed the success I have had without their support.”

It's impossible to say that the runningbacks couldn't have gotten the short yardage or that Chris Leak couldn't have scrambled for it.

Tebow helped win games but there is no guarantee that they couldn't have done it without him. They chose to go through him because they had him. Oregon turned around and when 12-0 after booting their Heisman candidate QB. Fact is, we don't know that Florida couldn't have won without Tebow.

All i can read here is: I cannot win without Tebow...

The problem is that if they do not already have someone lined up and they whiff on Mullen, there is a decent chance their hire is a bit underwhelming.

FL will get a coach of their choosing almost as easy as they select recruits they want. Meyer stepping down may end up helping FL. I don't think Meyer would have ever had the success he had with Tebow again. Meyer rode the coat tails of Tebow for a significant part of his success in the SEC, and I think that's part of why he's stepping down now. I think he knew it last year and was a part of why he wanted to step down last year.

It wouldn't surprise me to see FL get stronger with a Mulle, Chip Kelley, Malzahn type coach; so I'm not too sure that Meyer stepping down is a good thing.

I can say with almost 100% certainty that the running backs wouldn't have converted. Urban Meyer obviously felt the same way.

if they throw meyer type money at chip kelly he'll leave oregon in a heartbeat.

Not a chance. He'll be making ~$4mil/year and will owe Oregon money -- anywhere between $2mil and $4mil depending on when -- if he leaves early, and that's with no out clauses.

Kelly is going to be in Eugene for a while.

From the sounds of it, Meyer is retiring from work. Period. He must have gobs of dough, doesn't need it. Going to relax and watch his kids grow up. Hey, you can't begrudge him that.

As for a replacement, I have got to hope he would not take this step without having given UF a chance to lay some groundwork. Gruden? Leach? Mullen?

True. Tebow did contribute at some important times in '06 though. I'm still not sure Meyer's problem is as much not having Tebow as it is simply that it takes some time for him to adjust to a new QB. They experienced a similar falloff in '07 as they transitioned from Leak to Tebow.
