Michael Sam, Missouri DE, Is Gay

I just heard an interview. Was kindof hoping he would articulate like Sherman to really set off debate about stereotypes, but after hearing him, I'm shocked anybody is shocked. Not that you can tell somebody is gay by the way they speak or anything crazy and biased like that, but he sounds gay.

Really?

You're equating a football team showering after practice to you watching my wife shower...as if every gay guy is physically attracted to every other guy on the team.

Keep posting though, it's interesting to watch your thought process unfold.

Then why are locker rooms separated by gender?

Exactly...Played football my entire life, and worked at a place recently that required taking a shower after leaving the facility. Not once did I ever have to fend off getting hit on by a dude or anything...

I read that in the voice of Tom Landry and it didn't fit well.

I think this conversation has evolved, as it commonly does here, into people overreacting as if a gay man is some type of sex crazed monster that cannot control their own sexual preferences and will attack on sight of seeing another man nude. Give me a break. We're talking about a living, breathing, thinking, human being. Not some animal that cant control themselves and is a sexual predator that should be locked in a cage.

Despite whether or not you agree with their life choices, gays are people. People that are capable of controlling their emotions and sexual urges. Clue in a bit fellas.

I grew up in a Christian family. It's simply what I believe. I'm fully aware people don't understand (or don't care) of how someone can believe in a book or what someone said thousands of years ago.

To each his own.

And I attended Catholic school from 2nd grade to 12th, and attended mass every day from 2nd grade to 8th grade.

At some point I injected some logic into what the Bible represents. It was a book written by man, a book that can be selectively interpreted as one chooses.

God said "love others as you love yourself". If I live my life according to that, regardless of the lifestyle others live, I'm okay with where my soul is headed.

For those who say "hate the sin, love the sinner", I say worry about your own sins. I'll let the man upstairs deal with mine.

And if a teammate utters the notion that he feels uncomfortable because of this, thats fine. Thats their choice and opinon. But lets not act like all gays are these animalistic creations that dont come equipped with a moral compass and a sense of decency.

I completely agree. Great post.

Great post! No one could possibly say it better than this

It's a damn shame people are so worried about the personal life of others. Another individuals happiness
should not be dependent on some bigot who's life it doesn't effect at all.

I don't like showering with other dudes anyway. Never cared for it. Really only have ever wanted to be in a shower with women, which is just more comfortable when they rub soap on me. Not antigay or scared. Actually enjoy getting hit on by a gay guy ery now and then because I can't hit on any other women and my wife doesn't hit on me anymore.
And the Y makes me sick. At least a gay guy is prolly going to keep stuff clean. Walk into the Y and these old, nasty, straight men look like they could be hiding al Qaeda in their pubes. I swear I think a bird flew out the other day when I walked in there.

Why is the rate of male-on-female sexual assault far and away greater than the rate of gay-on-straight sexual assault?

I didn't say anything about assault or gays not controlling themselves. I have not made any assertions. My question is one of basic modesty. Do you have a bathroom door? Why? Women and men don't take showers and dress together is a public locker room setting. Why?

Why do you think the motives of a gay football player showering after practice are the exact same as a guy attempting to watch my 24 year-old daughter take a shower?

Do you assert they are not? If so, please provide some support for your argument and educate me.

Off topic, but are you the same Lawrence Wright that laid out Joey Kent back in the day?! Or just a fan of him?

If you are him, I completely change my stance on this issue as to not agree with you on anything! :)

You made the initial claim, how about you prove YOUR argument?

I'm sure you can do a quick Google search and find dozens of stories about guys in locker rooms being sexually harassed or assaulted in the shower by gay teammates.

I believe being gay does not define a person any more than being handicapped, fat or skinny. I have a couple of female friends who are gay. They are great people but I don’t agree with their life style. I’ll admit it took me a little time to get over the fact they were gay and look at them for who they are and not their life style. Like I said, I don’t agree with their life style. I believe it’s wrong because I believe the Bible is the Word of God and I believe what the Bible has to say on the matter. Regardless of your religious views on the subject, I’m assuming everyone would agree that professional athletes are role models and our kids look up to them. Do you really want the message that this type behavior is ok being given to your children? Most on here are adults and have the ability to see the player for who he is and enjoy watching him play the game. Children I’m not so sure about, they idolize these professional athletes and I’m afraid some will come away with the idea that this behavior is normal. Is this the message you would want your kids getting?

This is so true...the problem is all these people think the gay man in the shower is going be checking them out. They think because a person is gay they have no standards.

Good for this guy, hopefully he has a long successful career

What message is all this sending, other than your kids calling into question the role of religion in this discussion?

I'm of the opinion the Bible is all or nothing. If you're a Fundamentalist and believe every word, I can accept that moreso than people who pick and choose which passage supports their belief for the sake of convenience.

I didn't mention the media.

I mentioned hypocritical bible thumpers who pick and choose which sins are worth speaking out against...I never mentioned the media, you did.

Fornication and kids born out of wedlock run rampant in professional sports. According to God's law those are sins...yet you rarely hear anyone speak out against these sins.

This this this!! Also the same book leviticus forbids tattoos but no one ever bats and eye at an all-pro linemen with two full sleeves of tattoos.

HaHa! I have made no claims or assertions. I have asked questions. Acting offended does not have any merit in a debate.

Luckily your thinking is considered archaic.

Are you saying that there needs to be a gay shower room?
Look, buddy, I bet there would be a lot more chance of "action" going on in your gay showers than in the showers in place now.
Why stop at showers? Let's segregate them to their own restrooms, water fountains, resturaunts, and movie theaters as well.

I joined VN in 2009, at the height of the Meyer-Kiffin beef. Lawrence Wright was the most trollish handle I could think of.

I'm much older and mature now. :)

I was giving you one of several possible answers to your question. Co-ed shower rooms exist, in part, to protect women from any number of unwanted behaviors.
