Michael White (La Tech)

Sources confirmed to ESPN.com that the 37-year-old White, who has led the Bulldogs to a 74-31 mark over the last three seasons, is the choice of Vols athletic director Dave Hart.

Michael White has a 74-31 record in three seasons as Louisiana Tech's coach.
CBSSports.com earlier reported that Tennessee's coaching search is now focused on White.

However, sources told ESPN.com that White is mulling over the decision whether to take the job and that it's not a given that he will head to Knoxville.

I did Google, but I googled the team and not the coach. I think White might be the best fit for all concerned. As a coach, He is willing to take some calculated risk for reward.

He can recruit, He will win over the fan support, but face it we have fans that are not going to be satisfied no matter who coach's the team.

White > Pearl.

I know I'm opening myself up with this, but it won't be the first time I posted it. Anyone not named Dooley was going to have a top 10 class at UTK this year because of legacies and highly rated in-state kids who were not going anywhere else. If Jones can recruit at that level 2-3 seasons in a row I will believe that it was him. For now, I'm withholding judgment. Back to basktball. :hi:

Why werent legacies and highly rated in state kids coming to UT during Dooley's years?

How embarrassing if a coach from La Tech making $600k turns us down

I'll admit that would sting a bit. IF that were to happen, this search could get real ugly, real fast.

For now I'm sticking with the "mulling" is just the man letting those close to him know he will be moving to Knoxville. Him letting his team know before the presser is a good thing IMO.

So he can wait to coach his alma mater? If that's the reason, why is that embarrassing?

He might be waiting awhile, Kennedy just got a new deal last year iirc. There's also plenty of guys who don't go to their alma mater, or get out, some realize it's not the best option. Ole Miss is a dumb, doesn't pay great, has crappy fan support, and facilities are garbage compared to other schools.

Could he be waiting for another job because he has a good returning l squad? Sure. I don't think he's waiting for Ole Miss on the chance it comes available next year. What happens if Ole Miss is good next year?

Let's hope.

People can spin it how they want, but national media will take it and run with it and make Tennessee look even worse. There's already plenty of crap being thrown on Tennessee, right or wrong, the perception will only get worse if he turns us down.

Dave Hart is not going to offer the first kid on the block! The final signing day is a month away!

Means little. Kennedy rode Henderson to get more time. I bet they fire him next year barring a tourney birth. Agree with rest of your post though

I'm confused as well. If Hart is still looking for a basketball coach a month from now, well.....let's just not think about that.

He needs to just hire Howlalnd if it gets to that point. He clearly wants the job and doesn't give a $hit about the roster, if White turns us down hire Howland immediately.

I agree BTO. Believe it or not, but Hart has tried for a big name and funds were there but timing is just not right. White would be a good choice by going for cheaper guy.

If we get turned down by white, we have to hire Howland and tell NCAA we had no choice. NCAA owes us.

Hell, it's already embarrassing since this is apparently a tough decision for him and he is really having to seriously think about it.

He is making a decision for his family. Lots to consider. Maybe he wants to tell his team first, unlike someone else we know.

Dave Hart quote, "Same way I've done it my entire career. I know people in the basketball industry that I trust and respect, so I'll talk to them, then I'll reach out personally to candidates."

If White were to pass, I'd be OK with Howland IF as you mentioned before he has inquired about the job AND he came in at the right price. With so many schools passing on him, the man has no leverage at the bargaining table IMO no matter what his resume says. Howland at around 1.6-1.8, I could go for. No buyout would be another benefit for UT. Howland for Martin and UT puts 1 million+ in the bank? Not bad at all.

I expect to hear nothing definitive today.

Tomorrow I would think we will know one way or the other.

I am leaning toward White accepting the offer.

People act like getting turned down is embarrasing. No it's not. It's part of the process of finding someone that's right for the program. People and media make too much of that. They just want something to cry over.
