Michael White (La Tech)

the more I read on White, the more I like him... I'm more in favor of hiring a younger, energetic, fast pace style guy(as long as we have the players to run it) than a plodding offense style coach, such as Cuonzo or Howland,etc...

I'm not. Like I said in the other post....he could prove to be a good coach. I wouldn't be surprised at all. But looking at White's young resume....I see alot more to get excited about. Just my opinion.

Yep. No problem. Everyone's got their opinions on the new coach. The only reason I would favor a guy like Pitino is that his name could create credibility right away with recruiting. It sounds like he and White play a similar style. I know White has southern ties just not sure how quickly he will be able to recruit at a higher level.

He is already one of the best recruiters in the southeast...was getting top 25 classes to Ole Miss

I absolutely agree that the Pitino name would create some excitement in recruiting. I know alot seem opposed to his hiring. I would not be for sure. I can't see him leaving Minnesota after just 1 year....unless Hart throws around alot of money. I can see Hart bringing in a guy like White for alot less....with tons of upside. At least this Vols fan is really hoping so....I mean upside! Vols fans deserve a break. It's been a hard road for us all.

We need to recruit outside of the south in order to win big. The southern players are great athletes, but are not basketball smart, like some of the midwestern kids. Would love to see the next coach hire an assistant who has recruited the northeast. That is where a of the good point guards seem to hail from.

Re: White's team at LA Tech next year, you can look at that one of two ways.

1. White, if he stays, returns four starters from a 29 win team and will be a favorite to do damage in the NCAA Tournament
2. White, if he leaves, has set up the next coach at Louisiana Tech very well and will be at least doubling his current income

I guess I do see the other side of the coin more clearly. I don't really know anything about him. Its just that a lot of people have indicated that he is getting bonus points for having a successful coach as a father... OK, I admit I have some post trauma.

Also, White staying/going could also depend on if he thinks bigger SEC jobs could open next April. They can (and will), but it's all about if he wants to pull the trigger and begin the next stage a year early.

What players is he attributed to getting? I am in Memphis and casually keep up with OM because they are local. Andy Kennedy took several years to make the NCAAT and just last year. I just don't recall a top 25 class at OM.

I think the White discussion is putting some pressure on our #1 guy to decide fast. Or to piss off Missouri.

If he does become the next Vols Coach....will he wear the infamous orange pants like the last coach to come from that school....

I'd say his bonus points are from taking a horrible team(2-14 in the WAC) to 18 wins and the next year 27 wins... he's earned his bonus points,he's not being given anything...

Along with my other Easter prayers, one has been added asking the Lord to smite all those who dislike White solely based on him being from the same school as that other football coach

You can do a lot worse than Mike White. That said, there are at least two candidates that Tennessee has a better than good opportunity at getting that also possess lengthier resumes.

The reservation for White very well could be this....

He has 4 starters returning next year, a likely NCAAT and another 25+ win team. If that happens his stock goes even higher and he likely can land a better job and more money than Tennessee.

Does he risk that to come to a Tennessee team who returns 1 starter?

As I reported earlier this month, Mike White's buyout is $600,000 after he just signed 6-year, $3.6 mil extension. Prob. paper money to UT

Nothing new, but it made me think of something I heard earlier in the week. It didn't seem very important at the time.

Hyams, I know, I know...He's from down that way, has friends down there...any way he said he never thought he'd see the day when La Tech would pay a coach $600,000.

I'd say they are maxed out, not much they are going to be able to do in terms of adding to his compensation.

Similar situation for Mack who has a great class coming in.
