Michigan Investigated for Sign Stealing

They knew it was coming, wouldn’t be surprised if the Michigan and JH lawyers have not both been camped out at the Starbucks around the corner from the courthouse waiting all day to file the already filed out injunction papers.

Another "wrinkle"-

Today is a federal holiday. All courts are closed.

Interesting…

This actually makes sense. The Head Coach should be responsible for the actions of his / her employees and the program he runs. He has not done anything to address the issues other than have those in the program react like children and say "they are doing it too". He has taken no accountability for those under him - none at all. So he is thus taking the punishment (if you can call it that) as a result.

A new (January 2023) NCAA bylaw (11.1.1.1) states that the head coach will be held responsible. So this is not out of harmony with that by-law, at any rate, although this is not an NCAA action.

But if you think about it, this present in-stadium-only ban on Harbaugh is likely the absolute minimum penalty that could be assessed on Michigan while preserving the future story, as needed, that Michigan has already been punished.

Basically, the B1G is saying Michigan has a chance to win on the field, if with their head coach communicating remotely; and if they do, then everything Michigan has done (including damaging the credibility of the playoffs last year) will be forgiven.

JH will be gone at end of year anyway. Too much NCAA heat.

What is the integrity damage if it is found that Michigan gave all of these illegal gained signs to South Carolina to make sure that Clemson/UT did not make the playoffs and Michigan assured themselves of making it?

To me that integrity damage is as big as gambling, it is rigging the sports outcomes.
To your point this reminds me of Bruce Pearl first year here at Tennessee. We all know the NCAA loves to put side stories in things. Well Tennessee was given a 2nd Seed in the NCAA tournament. Their opponent was Winthrop however Winthrop got in by beating Coastal Carolina who was coached by Tennessee's previous coach Buzz Peterson in the conference tournament championship. So Winthrop was given the 15 seed to play Tennessee in opening round. Discussions seem to indicate the NCAA was hoping to get a matchup of Buzz Peterson matching up against his former team here at Tennessee in the first round.

Thats the stage, but this is the point. Bruce Pearl was asked what he thought about the matchup with Winthrop and possibility that had Coastal had won his team might have been going against their old coach. Bruce said something of the effect to I would LOVE to pick Coach Petersons brain about facing Winthrop since Coastal beat them twice and losing in close game in tournament. However there is a unethical line of competition that wouldn't be fair to ask a guy to help us against an opponent from his own conference. Now I am paraphrasing of course as that was 2006 season I think.

I shared this in response to your comment about integrity. At some point scouting should be for your own game played and not to interfere with other games. We are on same page my friend.

If you look at this new story from ESPN, you will see exactly the connection I have seen for myself from its occurence between (1) the news coming out about Michigan apparently stealing signs of non-B1G teams in order to the change the composition of last year's playoffs and (2) the sudden intervention of the B1G.

After ESPN reported that Stalions had bought tickets to games at 12 of the 13 other Big Ten stadiums and for games involving possible College Football Playoff opponents for Michigan, the Big Ten hinted its involvement would increase through the sportsmanship policy,...

I don't take the reporter to grasp the import of his sentence (although I can't rule it out), but it verifies my point of when the Big 10 did what they did, and I say why they did it. The severely damaged credibility of last year's playoffs was suddenly at risk of broad public exposure.

As a matter of fact, simultaneously with B1G taking up the case, all news and discussion about the 2022 playoff angle completely and immediately disappeared nationallly.

I don’t see how a simple ban from the sideline during the game is a punishment at all. Can he communicate with coaches during a game? If so, it might even be advantageous to view a game remotely and not be swept up in sideline activity.

I agree that even if he isn’t allowed to communicate with staff during the game, this is nothing more than a gesture to the other schools who demanded some action by the commissioner.

I suppose Michigan has plenty of people with game experience calling plays on account of previous suspension of Harbaugh and OC Sherrone Moore! 😂

Harbaugh already got away with recruiting and practice infractions -- and more importantly, lying to the NCAA -- with the merest wrist slap to start this year. What a privileged team! One gentle wrist slap followed by another.

And the worst of what Michigan is know to have done has been successfully covered up and moved off the table recently.

Delays on video feeds compared to live time. I doubt on crucial calls will they have time to ask Harbaughs input. Maybe a call that a coordinator coming down to a drive he might ask. Coach if we get down here you got a plan here later in drive? But not likely immediate play call.

Can he be in a press box? Is the coaches box upstairs considered part of the sideline?

The NCAA, Georgia and Beamer doesn’t want that discuseed. if they gave the signs to USCjr, it probably stopped another conferences teams from making the playoff and has a whole different set of implications. This is why I believe they want to sweep this part under the rug for a few years.

Beamer wants to draw at least one more years worth of checks before USCjr used this to pull a Donde and fire him for cause.

While I am not 100 percent certain for college, at least in most pro leagues communications equipment is banned in the sidelines, dugout, whatever

Sure there is a bullpen phone in dugouts but that is basically a closed circuit

The big disadvantage I see with Harbaugh being out is crucial decision making. Sure the offensive and defensive units are pretty self contained. Who's gonna decide whether to punt or go for it on 4th down though? Is their decision the same one Harbaugh would have made?.

Honestly, I don't think the B10 really wants to deal with any of this. The simplest way to basically make the issue go the back burner is for Michigan to lose. I would expect Penn State to get most of the calls tomorrow.

The NCAA is absolutely worthless.

Harbaugh should be suspended indefinitely.

Had this been Heupel, they’d have no problem giving us the maximum punishment.
Agreed. Don’t be surprised at the conclusion of this “investigation” that nothing happens to Michigan. This won’t hurt their recruiting, no loss of scholarships and no bowl or playoff ban. The NCAA will conclude that by firing Stallions it did enough. This is a complete joke.

Well this clown probably wont work again lol

Why does Shuster think ABC and Home Depot gives a flying leap whether he boycotts them?

Gee pal, they'll really miss ya...

I don't think the networks really want to cave in because then they show they will cave and pressure for additional firings will ensue.

I also find it interesting that since he couldn't possibly be mad at Michigan people, then he has to be mad at someone else! Reminds me of the old jokes about Saban being mad and firing someone else.

In a 13-page letter that the Big Ten sent to Michigan officials, specifically athletics director Warde Manuel, the league office and commissioner Tony Petitti outlined in no uncertain terms that Michigan both had not denied the alleged elaborate, well-planned sign-stealing, in-person scouting, spying scheme of Connor Stalions on behalf of Harbaugh's Wolverines program but that Michigan had not disputed these findings.
"[Michigan'’s November 8 response does not deny that the impermissible scheme occurred. Instead, it offers only procedural and technical arguments designed to delay accountability.
Moreover, the Big Ten document states in no uncertain terms that it has found Harbaugh's Michigan program culpable of cheating

Does anyone know the exact stipulations of Harbaugh's ban? Is he banned only from the sideline? Pressbox? Everywhere in the stadium? Zoom or other real time transmission of the field? Communication by radio, phone, or other method from outside the stadium?

I guess this means the Mich Defensive Coordinatot will be the head coaching Jim's absence
That's what they did when Harbaugh was suspended earlier this same season. The OC, who was only suspended one game 😂 at that time, took over play calling iirc. When the OC was not available the QB coach called plays. I don't know who called defenses.Connor Stalions? I am only kidding, but I have seen video of him shouting and signaling in defensive coverages from the sidelines, along with many of his players.

He's banned from the stadium for each game. Maybe he pulls George Blum Sr and hires a surrogate to be on the sideline.

More pissed off Michigan people! Ha!

Yeeaaaaahhhhhhhh

Meeeeechigan is really going to leave the B10 over this. Sure.

I'm sure the AAC is burning up the lines with the Michigan admin. I'm sure the Big House will be full every week with the Wolverines playing Upper Pallookaville St each week.

Tempest in a teapot. Wolverines will lose tomorrow or vs tOSU and this whole scene will become academic until the NCAA levels their punishment on the year 2026.
