Michigan Investigated for Sign Stealing

Don't see him going to MSU. They just don't have the resources that would allow him to only have to worry about 1 or 2 games a season.

I could see him going to Michigan if and a big IF they figure out a way to get out of this without a bowl ban and massive penalties like scholly reductions. Just don't see Urban taking a job where he is going to be at a disadvantage

This is absolutely crazy! Someone on your sidelines and either (1) you have no clue who it is or (2) you know who it is but don't want to admit it - so you just say... not on the list for the sideline passes.

Bottom line someone was there who may have been there for reasons that are against NCAA policy. Seems like there are several schools in "how do I spin this to protect my program" mode.
CMU is either going to chirp like a little birdie or fall on the grenade for big brother. It happened on their sideline. I have no doubt that they knew he was there. I’m sure many, if not most of the staff knows him.

Michigan should immediately call Meyer’s agent, get a deal done then do a Donde.

It’s still incredibly puzzling to me how every single bit of the investigation is getting leaked every day. I’ve never seen this happen.

Supposedly Day’s brother is the one flushing all of this out. It has gotten way too big for Michigan to sweep it. Then again, it’s the NCAA we are talking about here.

I have a longer post in mind but it’s weird to me that for two years nobody knew this was happening and now footballscoop (!!!) js somehow getting documents related to the investigation that started two weeks ago. It’s insane.

When you start beating certain teams, weird things start to happen.

@BigOrangeTrain, you and Neon both still saying there is no advantage? It seems like a whole bunch of people making million$ a year disagree with both of you.

Let me guess your excuse, they are just whining because they want Michigan out of the title chase?

The coaches in the Big Ten laid out to Petitti, who was hired in April, just how distinct of a schematic advantage Michigan has held the last three years by illegally obtaining the opposition's signals ahead of time, as has been alleged.

Coaches used words like "tainted," "fraudulent" and "unprecedented" on the call to describe Michigan's signal-stealing scheme, as has been alleged. Much of the call, according to sources, was coaches explaining to Petitti both how it worked and how it impacted them and their programs. Both in-person opponent scouting and using electronic equipment to steal signals are not allowed by NCAA rules.

That's only a rumor likely started by UM supporters to cast doubt on all of this.

If the Big 10 does grow a pair and drops a penalty like banning UM from the Big 10 championship, they would still likely be in the CFP. The committee has come out and said they're viewing this all as an NCAA issue so unless the NCAA wraps something up in the next month (never going to happen), UM will be playing in the CFP.

And if any punishment comes down from either the Big 10 or NCAA, UM probably will sue and may get an injunction allowing them to continue playing until everything works its way through the courts which will be well after the CFP is long over.

Wow crazy, and not one of them mentioned anything until two weeks ago and no investigation has been completed to even do anything

Whatever dude. Let me ask you a serious question. Let’s say Heupel have UCONN our playbook. Do you really think they could beat us? At the end of the day players have to execute. Let’s say we got UGAs playbook. Do you think we could score 50-60 on them? But you and others keep them tinfoil hats on and coming up with excuses.

My way too long, hopefully not too biased take:

Let's think about every single NCAA investigation that has occurred. It usually takes multiple years for them to conclude. Information comes out incredibly slow. Usually there is a report every few months about new information. Now, this is sign stealing, not recruiting or paying players. So yes, there is a difference. But two weeks ago not one reporter or journalist had this story. It was offiically announced by the Big Ten two weeks ago, 15 days. Heather Dinich initially said there will be a 18 month timeframe on this when the inital report came out.

Now, within two weeks, every day there is a new report. There is new information. Some journalist or reporter writes a new story every day with new leaks and "anonymous sources say". Not one coach has come out and made any sort of public acknowledgement that they believe Michigan stole signs. Not only that, Michigan somehow ran a two year operation that was not acknowledged. Now, within two weeks we have a bunch of information that comes out despite not one reporter getting a whiff of this for multiple seasons. Now, the Big Ten AD and coaches is are demanding their President to punish Michigan, even though not one official report or update on the investigation has been released within two weeks? Even though not one school reported them in two years?

Do I think Michigan stole signs? Yes. Do I think Michigan is guilty of going above and beyond the "code" of sign stealing with recording devices? Most likely. Do I also think I find it odd that Michigan was somehow able to run an elaborate, systematic sign stealing program for two years without getting caught and then within two weeks everything is being leaked out? Yes. Do I think there seems to be some sensationalism going on behind anonymous sources from reporters? Yes. Do I find it odd that Big Ten coaches are demanding punishment even though no official details from the investigation has been released? Yes.

It just feels like a whole lot of sensationalism going on. As I said two weeks ago, Deflategate-esque. Get out as many details, whether true or not, or before any official investigation is complete and see what sticks. No matter what happens in this investigation, even if it turns out that Stalions went rogue, or Michigan wasn't found guilty, or whatever, people will then just default to "NCAA protecting a blue blood" or maybe put enough pressure on Harbaugh to make him leave for then NFL. Yes I'm a Michigan fan, but I refuse to believe that even with Michigan doing something wrong and most likely cheating, that something else is afoot here.

I’m just shocked you seem to think you know more than all of these guys who do this for a living.

Again answer the question why did Michigan take the risks to do it if there is NO advantage according to you and Neon?

You seem to know a bit about the legal process and you may be right but the optics of this story look really really bad. If Michigan makes the playoffs, it’s going to be an absolute media fiasco. I mean how could it not?

Here’s a better question: If Michigan’s sign stealing was so unprecedented and “reports” state that teams last year knew about their scheme, how come it took over two years for someone to report them?

Your complaints are irrelevant. Cheating is cheating. Everybody does it. Some get caught and pay the price. That is simply how college football operates. Tennessee is a prime example.

It doesn’t matter. The ONLY thing that matters is did they break rules and get caught. Done overthink it and grade the sin.

Let’s say your whole premise is correct and some of this is overblown and also JH didn’t know, it could be a lot of sensationalism BUT if as one of the reports that came out said…the recordings were all stored on Michigan servers where multiple coaches were accessing them.

If the above is true maybe JH survives but the other coaches around the league are going to be calling for all those who accessed the illegal info to be suspended ASAP. JH could be coaching by himself.

For me them stealing signs in game with an expert on staff is one thing. It is a whole different thing for them to break a specific rule around traveling to scout/record.

BUT if they gave the signals to another team or teams to effect the makeup of teams in CFP, then that is death penalty/bowl bid loss time because you had an effect on the CFP integrity and you possibly stole the opportunity for kids to compete in the CFP and that opportunity can never be given back to those kids.

Oh of course. If all of this is true, then everything is tainted. I’m not denying that.

My issue is the amount of anonymous sources and “updates” coming out of this in a two week investigation. This never happens. It’s just weird and odd.

Disagree with that to a degree. Thinking back to all of the “McDonalds” bag info and other anonymous sources starting with the morning of the Texas A&M game when the cornbread Allegations came out. It went to all kind of rumors very quickly that turned out to mostly be true….IE…it was Chick-fil-A and not McDonalds bags!

I think in this case there has been a lot of investigating going on for months with the source who took it to the NCAA and I do believe that THE OSU maybe behind the leaks now to pour gasoline on the fire and remove Michigan/JH from their CFP path.
